"Full humanity is humanity united to God, in communion with God." - J. Todd Billings, Union with Christ

Jewish children used to begin their synagogue education by studying the book of Leviticus. For many of us, this seems unimaginable and possibly even unkind. Of all the places in the Bible to start, why in the world would you begin with Leviticus? In fact, Leviticus seems like it should be the last place in the Bible we should turn. One shrewd observer wryly pointed out that, "Leviticus often becomes that graveyard where read-through-the-Bible-in-a-year plans go to die."

Truth be told, Leviticus is often tedious and cumbersome. It reads more like an instruction manual than a novel. Furthermore, Leviticus is seemingly irrelevant to our lives. What good does it do us to know about outdated religious practices, arcane rituals related to skin diseases, and whether or not we should eat shellfish? Surely there are better ways to spend our intellectual and spiritual energies.

But, we neglect Leviticus to our peril. As we will see, the burden of the book is relational. Leviticus lays out a blueprint that gives us the shape and texture of what our lives look like when lived out in union with God. One of the most significant statements in Leviticus is this one:

You shall be holy to me, for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine. (Leviticus 20:26)

This speaks of God's holiness, which is another way of speaking about how God is different than us or "set apart" from us. How are we to be joined to this God who is so fundamentally "other"? And, once we are in relationship with him, how do we live out this union and express our love and loyalty to God? In other words, how do we begin to reflect his holiness into the world? These are the main concerns of this rich book.

Finally, it is important to know that Leviticus is a blueprint. As a blueprint, it is not the finished product. As we shall see throughout the book, the beautiful image silhouetted in Leviticus is fulfilled through the person and work of Jesus Christ. We are now being invited to live into the Christ-fulfilled reality of the pencil sketches we find in Leviticus.

Let us worship!

Throughout The Road to Character you distinguish between “Adam One” and “Adam Two,” or the "resumé virtues" and the "eulogy virtues." Can you explain the difference between the two and how they influenced your project?

Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik made this distinction between Adam One and Adam Two. Adam One is the career side of ourselves, and Adam Two is the internal side, the spiritual side of ourselves. The crucial thing is that they operate by different forms of logic. Adam One operates by a straightforward, economic logic: Input leads to output, and effort leads to reward. Adam Two operates by an inverse logic, basically the logic of the Beatitudes: The high will be made low; you have to give to receive; you must lose yourself to find yourself.

I didn't have a midlife crisis or anything, but I came to realize that I pay too much attention to the Adam One side of my life, and that I'm not articulate enough about my inner life. I came to a realize that career success doesn't actually lead to happiness. It doesn't lead to the deepest fulfillment. I started looking for something more. David Brooks, in an interview in Christianity Today

A great part of mankind imagines that righteousness is composed of faith and works…[However] so long as any particle of works righteousness remains some occasion of boasting remains with us…We never truly glory in [God] unless we have utterly put off our own glory. John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion

I keep kicking at the curb with my worn out shoes, and I keep running into strangers that say I know you. And I don't wanna be a proud man just wanna be a man. A little less like my father and more like my dad. I wanna hunt like David, I wanna kill me a giant man, I wanna slay my demons, But I got lots of them, I got lots of them. Noah Gundersen, David, from the album Family

S T A N D I N G C A L L T O W O R S H I P Psalm 47:12; 93:1; Hebrews 4:14,16

Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with loud songs of joy. For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared, a great king over all the earth. The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed, he is girded with strength. He has established the world; it shall never be moved. Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Confession of sin happens within the context of

relationship, both with God and each other. We confess

together, in community, before a gracious God who

has given us himself. Confession both

acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its

abundance in Christ.

C O N F E S S I O N O F S I NFather in heaven, please forgive us. We have sinned against you in our thoughts, in our words, and in our deeds.

We are not who we should be. We are not who we want to be. We are not who our friends, family members, neighbors, and loved ones need us to be.

We have been quick to speak, to defend, to judge, and to dismiss. And, we have been slow to listen, to wonder, to love, and to admit. Forgive us and cleanse us, O Lord. Help us to joyfully and faithfully walk in your ways.

(You are invited to confess your sins silently.)

L E C T I O S A C R A Galatians 3:10-14For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.

The word of the Lord! Thanks be to God!

“Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of

years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The

assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be

shaped by all of God’s word.

I N T E R L U D EMusical interludes are

included in our service in order to provide space for

reflection and worship.

R E C E I V I N G O F G R A C E Titus 2:11-14For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you!

P R AY I N G T H E P S A L M S Psalm 138Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how

to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel.

As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection.

I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word. On the day I called, you answered me; my strength of soul you increased.

All the kings of the earth shall give you thanks, O Lord, for they have heard the words of your mouth, and they shall sing of the ways of the Lord, for great is the glory of the Lord. For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me. The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

Leviticus 26 Rev. John Haralson

Grace Kids order of worship is available in the lobby for kids 5 years old and up.

Sermon activity for kids age 5-8 in room 103 (during second service only). No sermon time activity for the summer beginning June 28. Information for all ages on inside front cover.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Q.What do you believe about the forgiveness of sins? A.I believe that God, because of Christ's satisfaction, will no more remember my sins, nor my sinful nature, against which I have to struggle all my life, but will graciously grant methe righteousness of Christ, that I may never come into condemnation.

The Heidelberg Catechism is the best

known of the Reformed confessions. It was written in Heidelberg, Germany in

1563 by two young ministers.

T H E S A C R A M E N T O F C O M M U N I O NCommunion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven’t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church.

Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen.

Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in either the wine (taller cup) or grape juice (shorter cup) on the table, then proceed through the line.

S E R M O N T E X T[1] “You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the LORD your God. [2] You shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD. [3] “If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them, [4] then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. [5] Your threshing shall last to the time of the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall last to the time for sowing. And you shall eat your bread to the full and dwell in your land securely. [6] I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid. And I will remove harmful beasts from the land, and the sword shall not go through your land. [7] You shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. [8] Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand, and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. [9] I will turn to you and make you fruitful and multiply you and will confirm my covenant with you. [10] You shall eat old store long kept, and you shall clear out the old to make way for the new. [11] I will make my dwelling among you, and my soul shall not abhor you. [12] And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people. [13] I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their slaves. And I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect. [14] “But if you will not listen to me and will not do all these commandments, [15] if you spurn my statutes, and if your soul abhors my rules, so that you will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant, [16] then I will do this to you: I will visit you with panic, with wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make the heart ache. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. [17] I will set my face against you, and you shall be struck down before your enemies. Those who hate you shall rule over you, and you shall flee when none pursues you. [18] And if in spite of this you will not listen to me, then I will discipline you again sevenfold for your sins, [19] and I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze. [20] And your strength shall be spent in vain, for your land shall not yield its increase, and the trees of the land shall not yield their fruit. [21] “Then if you walk contrary to me and will not listen to me, I will continue striking you, sevenfold for your sins. [22] And I will let loose the wild beasts against you, which shall bereave you of your children and destroy your livestock and make you few in number, so that your roads shall be deserted. [23] “And if by this discipline you are not turned to me but walk contrary to me, [24] then I also will walk contrary to you, and I myself will strike you sevenfold for your sins. [25] And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall execute vengeance for the covenant. And if you gather within your cities, I will send pestilence among you, and you shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. [26] When I break your supply of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in a single oven and shall dole out your bread again by weight, and you shall eat and not be satisfied.

[27] “But if in spite of this you will not listen to me, but walk contrary to me, [28] then I will walk contrary to you in fury, and I myself will discipline you sevenfold for your sins. [29] You shall eat the flesh of your sons, and you shall eat the flesh of your daughters. [30] And I will destroy your high places and cut down your incense altars and cast your dead bodies upon the dead bodies of your idols, and my soul will abhor you. [31] And I will lay your cities waste and will make your sanctuaries desolate, and I will not smell your pleasing aromas. [32] And I myself will devastate the land, so that your enemies who settle in it shall be appalled at it. [33] And I will scatter you among the nations, and I will unsheathe the sword after you, and your land shall be a desolation, and your cities shall be a waste. [34] “Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbaths as long as it lies desolate, while you are in your enemies' land; then the land shall rest, and enjoy its Sabbaths. [35] As long as it lies desolate it shall have rest, the rest that it did not have on your Sabbaths when you were dwelling in it. [36] And as for those of you who are left, I will send faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. The sound of a driven leaf shall put them to flight, and they shall flee as one flees from the sword, and they shall fall when none pursues. [37] They shall stumble over one another, as if to escape a sword, though none pursues. And you shall have no power to stand before your enemies. [38] And you shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up. [39] And those of you who are left shall rot away in your enemies' lands because of their iniquity, and also because of the iniquities of their fathers they shall rot away like them. [40] “But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers in their treachery that they committed against me, and also in walking contrary to me, [41] so that I walked contrary to them and brought them into the land of their enemies—if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and they make amends for their iniquity, [42] then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, and I will remember my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. [43] But the land shall be abandoned by them and enjoy its Sabbaths while it lies desolate without them, and they shall make amends for their iniquity, because they spurned my rules and their soul abhorred my statutes. [44] Yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not spurn them, neither will I abhor them so as to destroy them utterly and break my covenant with them, for I am the LORD their God. [45] But I will for their sake remember the covenant with their forefathers, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God: I am the LORD.” [46] These are the statutes and rules and laws that the LORD made between himself and the people of Israel through Moses on Mount Sinai.
