FOCUS ON WORSHIP
St. Luke, Evangelist: Of special interest to our church, October 18 is the festival of St. Luke, Evangelist. Luke was identified as the author of both Luke and Acts and he was careful to place the events of Jesus' life in their social and religious contexts. His gospel gives us some of the most beloved parables, as well as the songs of Zechariah, Mary, the angels, and Simeon. St. Luke was a gentile physician, follower of Christ and companion of St. Paul. Identified as the author of both Luke and Acts, Luke was careful to place the events of Jesus' life in their social and religious contexts. His gospel gives us some of the most beloved parables, as well as the songs of Zechariah, Mary, the angels, and Simeon. We observe this lesser festival when it falls on a Sunday. Reformation Day/Sunday: Reformation Day or Reformation Sunday is not part of the Liturgical Calendar, but it is important as part of our Lutheran heritage. It is a day for giving thanks for Martin Luther and the other reformers. It also calls attention to the ongoing need for ecumenical growth and renewal of the church. It falls on October 31st every year, but is observed on the Sunday on or before October 31st. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther wrote to Albrecht, Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg, protesting against the sale of indulgences. He enclosed in his letter a copy of his "Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences," which came to be known as The 95 Theses. Luther wrote the 95 Theses and posted them on the church of All Saints, an event now seen as sparking the Protestant Reformation. The liturgical color of the day is red, which represents the Holy Spirit and the Martyrs of the Christian Church. Martin Luther's hymn, “A Mighty Fortress is our God” is often sung on this Sunday.

In our Gospel readings last month, we heard Jesus’ declaration that he is the “Bread of Life.” What a beautiful Eucharistic theme to ponder and spend time with as we explore together the future directions of ministry at St. Luke. After all, what could be more appropriate for a community to ground itself in than this image of Jesus as our nourishment, our sustenance, and our hope? Jesus, who, during this time of so much instability and impermanence, satisfies our hunger and gives us bread that will last. I am filled with joy to now join you around Christ’s Table each week and to share in this meal as your new pastor. I am tremendously grateful for the warm and caring welcome I received and for our conversations as I continue getting to know you better on an individual basis. Transitions can be times of many complex emotions and I hope to learn more about your hopes and dreams for St. Luke as we proceed together in our path of faith and as we embark this fall on a visioning plan for the next five years. In the meantime, I continue to set up calls and/or visits; there are initial office hours set aside for appointments Tuesday through Thursday, but my availability is much wider than that so feel free to reach out if you would like to meet with me earlier. Once again, I am so thrilled to finally be here with you all – to join with you in being fed and nourished by the free grace we receive in Christ – and I am excited to explore where the Spirit will lead us in our days to come. In peace, Pastor Josh

On Sunday, August 1, 2021, we welcomed the Reverend Joshua Menke to St. Luke as our new pastor. He led his first in-person Worship Service at 10:00am that day. Following the Worship Service, the congregation was invited to join him for a cake and refreshments reception.
We continue to broadcast “Live” on Facebook every Sunday morning. The video will also be uploaded to our Youtube channel.

It is so good to be back in church and I think that it will be even better when more musical performances and events take place* at wonderful St. Luke Church! (*but safely – there’s no fun in being sick…) Speaking of performances, on Friday, August 6th 25 children presented “Malice in the Palace - The story of Queen Esther.” This show told the biblical story of Esther with its powerful message that the smallest person acting bravely can make an enormous difference, and that God has placed us where we are for a reason. This show was the culmination of a week-long FREE Summer Musical Theater Camp for children in grades 1 – 8. The camp ran from Monday to Friday, August 2 - 6 from 9:00am to 3:00pm and could not have run as smoothly as it did without the daily support of Sim and Marlys Austin, Marty and Ann Witthoefft, Tim Hesson, Peggy Walters and others.
The campers learned their lines, sang their songs and danced for a week to present the 45-minute show that was filled with humor, pathos and inspiring, upbeat music. Next summer we will again offer a musical theater camp (details coming in early 2022.)

“God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday is September 12, 2021
This day is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. Our “Let’s Give it Our Best Shot” for our Rise Against Hunger service project on September 11 from 9:00AM to 11:00AM offers an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. Join us on September 11 from 9:-00AM - 11 :00AM for “God’s Work. Our Hands.”, our dedicated day of service for Rise Against Hunger. Then return on Sunday, September 12 at 10:00 AM for a celebration of who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America - ELCA. A Donut Reception in the Courtyard follows the 10:00AM Service.
Don’t forget to wear your yellow T-shirt!

Please see the information below

Flower Dedications
The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are used to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend Worship services.
Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a special person, an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event. More than one person may find a certain date important so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.
If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers are yours to take home after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. Please return the container the flowers are in to the church at your convenience.
You may sign up on the chart located in the fellowship hall.
The 2021 Flower Chart Calendar
The 2021 Flower Calendar is hanging in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday Altar Flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. Just let us know and we will automatically add your info to the Flower Calendar each year. If you have any questions or would like more information about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the church office at 804-272-0486 Ext. 1 or [email protected]. Thank you.
ALTAR FLOWER DATES Thank you to everyone that has signed up to place flowers on the Altar on Sundays during the year.
We greatly appreciate it.
Please remember, Altar Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.
We love when we have two arrangements for Sunday morning so please feel free to check out the chart!
If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. The Altar Flower Chart
is hanging in the fellowship hall near the kitchen. Thank you for participating.

OUR SPONSORED CHILD
Dear St. Luke members,
Our congregation has been supporting Paul through Child Fund International for eight years. Due to the pandemic and our inability to gather at St Luke during most of 2020 and half of 2021, we have fallen behind in our support. In the past we have used a sign up sheet. A sign up sheet doesn't work very well when not everyone feels comfortable gathering for worship. I am asking, if you are so inclined, to please send in a payment of $28.00 made out to St. Luke Lutheran Church with “Help Paul” in the memo line. Thank you so much for your support in this effort. Paul and his family appreciates it.
