Welcome to 2018!

This New Year is ours to use as we want. I hope you have great plans for 2018 and see their fulfillment. I think this is the time of year every WGM puts her nose to the grindstone and works hard to complete the plans for her session. I am no different, finding my-self at the computer, wistfully looking out the window and attempting to motivate myself. Then I remember I want session to be great for all of you. And I want to attend the Grand Visitations and Receptions and Dinners and other events without too much guilt over work not done. If you have already accepted a job at session, thank you! If you are undecided, please ask questions. It will take the entire “village” to pull off a great session. We have our fingers crossed that a Grand Initiation will be held in the Portland Metro area this spring. Stay tuned to the OES website and Facebook page for updates. Please be extra careful in your travels, while we are not having a repeat of last year’s spectacular winter, it can still be tricky out there.

Howdy all! I hope the trail has been good to you. Gloria and I have had a great time out there on the trail in the Oregon Territory.We have now reached 2018. We are in the home stretch for Grand Chapter with many, many things to do. First thing I must do is wish you all a Happy New Year and good luck and success in remainder of your term as officers of your Chapters. Gloria and I are working on Page and Usher list. The opening for the emblem ceremony, ribbon talk, flag presentation and script. Many of you have to will be receiving letters requesting your help to do different jobs for our upcoming Grand session. I sure hope that you will be able to help us wherever you can whether it be large or small. A Grand Session does not operate with just the Worthy Grand Matron and Worthy Grand Patron, it is the membership that makes Grand Chap-ter what it is. This month we start off with our first Grand Visit which was at Adah Chapter with Naomi. That leaves us with six Grand Visits, a Regional School and a reception for the month of January. Also on the list for this month was the installation of officers for Al Kad-er Shrine which was very well attended by some of our Eastern Star members and the Michael Allen Har-rison concert for cancer research which had a great attendance this year. I hope many of you can attend the OES / Amaranth Youth Function in Wilsonville the 21st of January. Sounds like they have a lot of fun things lined up for us to do and good food. Again, I hope to see many of you there to help raise money for such a good cause.The last thing I want to do is to thank everyone for all the cards and gifts that I have received in the past months. I can never thank the members of Eastern Star enough for making this such a wonderful year for me.

Creswell Star Chapter #96 started 2018 with a Big Thank You to our 1st Responders

On January 6th a group of Creswell Star members with baskets full of edible goodies, a tin of popcorn and a fire engine Kleenex holder, made a visit to Creswell Fire Station to thank them for their dedica-tion and service. The Eastern Star members were welcomed with coffee and a delightful tour of the facilities. The members found there are always two regular employees and 1 volunteer on duty. They work 48 hours on and 48 hours off. Over 90% of the calls they re-ceive are for medical calls. The Eastern Star members asked many questions and were very appreciative to see the medical unit. The South Lane County Fire dis-

trict was very thankful to the communities for approv-ing a bond measure which provided them with a brand new fire engine. Our members enjoyed seeing the new

engine and all the new equipment. Our Wor-thy Patron Alan espe-cially enjoyed the tour as he too has become a first responder with the Halsey Volunteer fire department. As we completed our tour we thank them again for their service and invited them to our Corn Beef and Cab-bage Dinner on March

17th and to many of our other open events. We look forward to building our relations with the Fire Depart-ment and the Creswell Community.

Re: Letter of Intent for the office of Associate Grand Conductress

Worthy Grand Matron, Worthy Grand Patron, Distinguished and Honored Members, Sisters and Brothers.

It is with great honor, love and support from my family, Mt. Scott Chapter # 110, and my friends that I submit my “Letter of Intent” to run for the office of Associate Grand Conductress.

I was initiated into Mt. Scott Chapter # 110 on January 5, 1978 and have been an active part of the chapter for over 39 years. I have had the pleasure of being Worthy Matron of Mt. Scott Chapter three times during the Diplomats, Victori-anns and Shooting Stars years, and am currently going through the line as a Miracle Believer. I have also held several other offices in my chapter including, Chaplain, each star point, Associate Conductress, Conductress and Associate Matron.

I was honored to serve as a Grand Representative of California from 2011 to 2013.

I have served on the Following Grand Committees during my star life: Arts and Crafts and Home Endowment for the Eastern Star Home, Special Projects, Scholarships Fund and am currently Chairman of the Membership Committee.

I also held the office of Grand Esther during the Smiling Hearts year.

I am a Past Mother Advisor of Mt. Hood # 81, International Order of Rainbow for Girls.

If elected, I will work hard to do my best for the Grand Chapter and all of Oregon Eastern Star.

Mary Welch of Forest Chapter - Received The Life Saving AwardLast night the members of Forest Chapter #42, recognized and ex-tended their sincerest thanks to Mary Welch for her quick thinking and life saving actions. On a cold December night Mary Welch was at home and found that her husband, John, was having a possible cardiac event. Mary im-mediately called the emergency services and while remaining on the telephone with the operator,

Mary began to perform CPR on John. Mary maintained the CPR until the emergency services per-sonnel arrived and took over. They then transported John to the hospi-tal. Mary's actions on that Decem-ber evening kept John alive and with us today. Mary would like to encourage all of you to consider getting CPR trained. You never know when you may be put in a position to save a person's life.

The Grand Chapter of Oregon, Order of the Eastern Star, recognizes January as National Mentoring Month and celebrates those who have dedicated their time and talents to help transform the life of a youth. Oregon OES provides positive role models for youth. Across Oregon there are more than 200 youth in Oregon Job's Daughters, Oregon State DeMolay and Oregon International Order of the Rainbow for Girls who have Eastern Star men-tors. "They chat over refreshments together, help with service projects, go bowling and the list goes on and on," Stapleton, Co-chair of Youth Awareness for OES said, "It helps youth grow into tomor-row's leaders."Oregon OES Members are a positive influence for youth. "I am proud that there's a whole group of unsung heroes out there making a huge differ-ence in the lives of youth here in Oregon," said Gloria Varner, WGM.
