NOVEMBER CHAPTER PROGRAM: ORGAN MASTERCLASS WITH DR. OWOLABI

On Saturday, November 10 at 10:00 AM at All Saints Episcopal Church (8787 River Road, Richmond, VA 23229), Dr. Owolabi will lead a playing masterclass with the following volunteers from our Chapter: Landry Duvall (Symphony No. 6: Finale—Charles-Marie Widor), Stephen Henley (Elegy—John Ireland), and Ann Boelzner (Prelude and Fugue in C-minor, BWV 549—J.S. Bach). This program will not have a meeting or meal. Please note that this is a different location than Friday evening’s performance. Note also that November 10 is the date of the Rich-mond Marathon and plan your travel arrangements accordingly!

    THE DEAN’S LETTER TO MEMBERS

    Have Courage, My Boy

It takes courage to speak in public; it takes courage to participate in a sport; it takes courage to volunteer for a job; it takes courage to perform on an instrument; in fact, it takes courage to put yourself out there in the public view in any way. That is why I have such admiration for and give such thanks to the three guild members who volunteered to participate in the wonderful Jeffrey Smith Practical Tips for Improvisation workshop at River Road Presbyterian. They were, in order of performance, Ryan Tibbetts, Jacob Temple, and Charles Lindsay. I have images in my mind of a folder being dropped to suggest trying not to play always in the middle of the key-board; of hands being lifted in the air to suggest breaths; of motives begin expanded up and down; of registrations

stripped down to reveal the lines; and of three guild members who can transpose anything and play notes up and down and forward and back-ward. The size of the group attending suggested that there was a keen interest in improvisation. Everyone was very aware of the brilliance of the clini-cian and the abilities of the three performing members. Every one of the three showed talent, skill, improvement, and, yes, COURAGE. My deep thanks to Chris Reynolds, Landry Duval, Paul Honaker, and everyone else who took part in planning and participating in this event. If you missed this program, you really missed a great one.

  • BEAUTIFUL CONTINUO ORGAN FOR RENT The Bennet & Giutarri organ is an excellent instrument for accompanying your vocal or instrumental ensemble. The voic-ing and speech is exceptionally fine and regular from note to note. The tone is gentle and supportive. There is no strident, piercing sound. All the pipes are wood and stable in pitch. Tuning is normally performed with equal temperament however some unequal temperaments may be set. The transposing keyboard allows for several different pitches. The organ can be delivered to your performance venue two days prior to use. It is tuned the day prior to use and then picked up not later than the day after use. Renter is responsible for the safe keeping of the organ while in possession and arranging ready and easy access for delivery, tuning and pick up. Mileage for delivery is extra when outside Baltimore City.
