    BPI Organic Agriculture Program

    What is Organic Agriculture?

    Organic Agriculture is de fined by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) as a production s ystem that sustains the health of s oils, ecosystems andpeople. It relies on ecological processes , biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions rather than the us e of inputs with adverse effects. Organic Agriculture combinestradition, innovation and s cience to benefit the shared environment and prom ote fair relationships a nd a good quality of life for all involved.

    What is the role of BPI?

    The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) plays a mandated role in s eed development for the country. In the Repub lic Act No. 7308 or known as Seed Industry Developmen t Act of 1992,the DA-BPI shall have the direct respons ibility for the production, distribution, regulation of breeder, foundation, and registered s eeds i ncluding but not limi ted to the managem ent of

    the existing research stations and seed farms , seed testing la boratories, and certification services under the s elf-reliant managemen t scheme. In 2010, R.A. No. 10068 otherwiseknown as Organic Act of 2010 was enacted. The Law expanded the role of the BPI to ensure the sup ply of high quality organic see ds.

    BPI and the Organic Seed System

    To fulfill its role in developing the organic s eed system, the BPI is implem enting the program e ntitled Development of the National Organic Rice Seed Production Systems withInformal Sector supported by the Bureau of Agricultural Rese arch (BAR).

    The project generally aims to establish national s eed production systems by setting-up organic rice seed production areas in partnership with the private sector, broadening thescience-based knowl edge on organic rice se ed production technologies. Specifically, the project aims :

    To establish partnership and p rovide initial s upport to identified organic stakeholders for participatory organic rice seed production;

    To document the growth an d yield performance of s elected National Seed Indus try Council (NSIC) approved rice varieties grown under participatory organic rice seedproduction;

    To produce certified organic rice s eed from the identified organic collabo rators for the distribution to organic stakeholders;

    To generate, package and disse minate organic rice seed production technologies;

    To upgrade the existing seed production facilities and equipm ent at BPI-Crop production Division to support and s trengthen services of the organic s eed stakeholders ;

    To formulate and develop guidelines on organic s eed production certification for NSIC registration; and,

    To conduct training on organic rice seed production.

    Organic Rice Seed Production

    Ramon Magsaysay Center for Agricultural Res ource and Environmental Studies

    For Visayas

    Negros Island Initiatives for Rural Development (Formerly Negros Oriental Institute for Rural Development, Inc)

    For Mindanao

    Don Bosco Multi-purpose Cooperative (formerly known as Bios Dynamis)
