OAR

Dear Friends,

OAR began 2009 knowing that it was going to be a difficult year for many of our supporters, both businesses and indi-viduals. We soon discovered, however, that despite a tough economy and job losses, our member support remained strong. Concern for our environment, and our rivers in particular, did not diminish. When it came time to support OAR’s science-based advocacy, education, and recreational activities, our supporters came forward.

We are able to be so effective because of member support. Having about 900 members who contribute financially to the organization through membership dues, annual appeals, and major gifts, and as volunteers, makes it possible for OAR to take action quickly, to monitor the river’s water quality consistently (for 18 years!), and help bring into being the next generation of river stewards.

Two new initiatives have taken off in 2009 that reflect the needs and interests of our watershed communities: monitoring the water quality of the Sudbury River, and our first annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival. Our ongoing science, steward-ship, and advocacy activities were undertaken, as always, with a small but dedicated staff and a large corps of volunteers.

Thank you for your dedication to restoring the health of our beautiful rivers.

Science• Completed the 18th water quality and streamflow monitoring season on the

Assabet, 7th season on the Concord, and first season on the Sudbury River. Twenty-eight volunteers tested water quality and streamflow at 25 sites.

• Completed a sixth season assessing aquatic plant biomass in the large impound-ments of the river.

• Presented a long-term trends analysis of water quality data on the Assabet River at the New England Association of Aquatic Biologists’ annual conference

• Assisted volunteers from the Westford Watersheds group to continue montor-ing their streams, and volunteers from the White Pond Association to test water quality in White Pond.

Stewardship• Volunteers participated in the 23rd Annual Assabet River Cleanup in seven

towns along the Assabet.• Presented walks, paddles, celebrations, and slide shows for OAR members and

the public. • Provided in-school presentations and hands-on Water Wise workshops for chil-

dren; held our first Intel-OAR Environmental Innovators contest for high school students.

• Our first annual Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival played to a sand-ing room-only audience.

• Intel Assabet Aquifer Recharge Fund sought and evaluated additional proposals.• Raised awareness about the Assabet River and OAR’s mission through the

Boston Globe, MetroWest Daily News, Worcester Telegram and Gazette, and local weekly newspapers.

• Successfully used Action Alerts to engage members in local issues of concern• Volunteers removed water chestnuts from the Assbet in Stow and Maynard

Speaking up• Held extensive watershed-wide consultations on river restoration and dam

removal, with two scientific workshops and a podcast for the OAR website. • Reviewed and commented on draft Assabet River Sediment and Dam Removal

Study reports as member of Study Coordination Team..• Maintained pressure for funding and completion of wastewater treatment plant

upgrades. • Commented on permit applications for water withdrawals, municipal water

resource management plans, and development and riverfront projectsto ensure that state and federal rules to protect the river are upheld.

• Participated in state-wide river advocacy with other watershed groups to make a louder collective voice; commented on proposed state regulatory changes to protect surface waters.
