About PGPR
Plant Growth-Promoting organisms are usually Biofertilizers or Biofungicides. Additionally
PGPR are also used for controlling several plant pathogens, enhance nutrient uptake and in
rhizoremediation. In the context of increasing international concern for food and environmental
quality, the use of PGPR for reducing chemical inputs in agriculture is a pressing issue. The
application and commercialization of PGPR for sustainable agriculture is a growing and
demanding market world-wide. Approx. 50% of the current world population is engaged in
agriculture, of which 30% are small holder farmers living on less than $2.00. Farm size,
productivity and poverty are strongly linked. The promise of technologies such as PGPR is that
they will provide solutions that will increase the productivity and profits of small holder
farmers around the world, thus increasing food supply and reducing poverty in a sustainable
way. Hence, the research must be focused on the new concept of rhizo-engineering based on
favorable partitioning of the exotic biomolecules, which create a unique setting for the
interaction between plant and microbes. Future research in rhizosphere biology will rely on the
development of molecular and biotechnological approaches to increase our knowledge of
rhizosphere biology and to achieve an integrated management of soil microbial populations.
Studies on PGPR fit very well with these goals, and for this reason, our research area is
receiving renewed interest.

Due to an increasing importance of PGPR and support from many Asian countries, a need was
felt to establish individual chapters in various countries. Currently, five Asian countries have
their own Chapters of PGPR Society under the parental Society of Asian PGPR Society for
Sustainable Agriculture. India Chapter of Asian PGPR Society
India Chapter of Asian PGPR Society is a non-profit scientific society established in 2017, to
facilitate conduct of annual conferences across major cities in India, to create a platform to share
and discuss their common interests in propagating advances in PGPR research and its
commercialization within India. In India, though PGPR research has picked up tremendously,
there is a still a need to widen the scope and perspectives of its application to several agricultural
crops. PGPR applications need to be projected as viable alternatives or supplements to chemical
fertilizers and pesticides. At this juncture, the role of Indian Chapter of Asian PGPR Society of
Sustainable Agriculture is pivotal. India Chapter of Asian PGPR Society is instrumental in
bringing researchers, academics and entrepreneurs together on a common platform for the
exchanging of ideas, promoting public-private partnerships and promoting research integration
among public and private agencies.

The Asian PGPR Society for Sustainable Agriculture is a scientific society
formed in 2009 as a nonprofit organization to enable scientists, researchers,
academicians, government groups, students, farmers, and industry personnel
from various agricultural disciplines to meet and discuss their common
interests in academics, research and innovation with a dedicated objective of
popularizing the tremendous potential of PGPR in sustainable agriculture.
The Society has more than 1500 members in Asia & other countries and is
entirely run by volunteers. It’s spearheaded by eminent research scientists and
experts in the field of PGPR research and includes members with expertise in
various facets of PGPR enriched with a wide membership of graduate
students, postdoctoral fellows, research associates, technical assistants, plant
pathologists, research scientists, professors from federal and provincial
governments, universities, and companies engaged in plant health research.
Principle objectives of The Asian PGPR are to encourage research, education,
and the dissemination of knowledge on the importance of PGPR. Asian
PGPR Society-sponsored international and regional association meetings to
provide an opportunity for PGPR researchers to meet and discuss their
common interests.
International Conferences Organized by Asian PGPR Society
Over the years, the society has organized several International Conferences, in various
Asian Countries including: India (2009), China (2011), Philippines (2013), Vietnam
(2015), and Indonesia (2017) with grand success.

The Department of Botany and Microbiology had its humble beginning with establishment of
Botany department in 1967 and Microbiology department (1992). A strong foundation of the
department was laid down by late Prof. A.S. Rao, Ph.D. (Cantab) and legacy of the Department
has been continued through recruitment of highly qualified staff, research scholars and students of
outstanding quality. Several research projects funded by CSIR, UGC, DNES, APSEB, ICAR,
DAE, BSI, SERB, DBT and DST have been successfully completed by the faculty and several
projects are ongoing in the department. The department received UGC Non-SAP, UGC- SAP (2nd
phase) & DST- FIST schemes. The department has herbal Garden with nearly 300 species of
medicinal plants and 76 PGPR and 36 antibiotic and anticancer strains of marine bacteria and
actinomycetes to serve the need of researchers and professionals. received UGC Non-SAP, UGC-
