Oriana Publications are pleased to announce that Christopher Painter is this year’s recipient of the prestigious Tlws y Cerddor (Musician’s Medal) at the 2010 Blaenau Gwent Eisteddfod. The medal was presented during a ceremony in the Eisteddfod’s main pavilion on Tuesday evening and was awarded for his composition for baritone, violin and harp entitled Syniadau’r Serch (Thoughts on Love), an eight minute cycle of songs based on texts taken from the Hen Benillion and dealing with the joy, sorrow, the loss, pain, disappointment, remembrance and eternity of love. The work is presented to everyone who loves, has loved, is looking for love or has been loved. Speaking from the stage, judge Geraint Lewis said: “This is a composer who is totally self-assured when choosing his musical medium, a composer who naturally understands how to set words to music. This is chamber music at its best, and he wins this year’s Musicians Medal with great praise.” 2010 has proved to be a very good year for Christopher with the very successful premiere of his Symphony No.3 “Fire in the Snow” in Mexico City, the premiere of Spring of Vision by Clara Biss (violin); Robin Michael (cello) and Katie Lockhart (clarinet) at the Machynlleth Festival, the premiere and release on CD of Lunar Seas by the Lunar Saxophone Quartet and the publication of The Broken Sea, commissioned by Timothy Reynish and first performed by the Wind Orchestra of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (where Christopher has taught composition since 2001) by Maecenas Music and its scheduled USA premiere in the Autumn of 2010. To crown the year, Christopher has been commissioned to write a fanfare to mark the 30th anniversary of the Wales Festival of Remembrance. This fanfare will receive its premiere at the opening of this year’s festival at St. David’s Hall when it will be played by the Band of the Royal Welsh. The fanfare, entitled Fidelity, will be used in subsequent years to open the festival. Christopher is unlikely to have a quieter time in 2011with the first performance of Furnace of Colours scheduled for March 9th. This song-cycle to texts by Vernon Watkins has been commissioned by the BBC for soprano Claire Booth and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Jac van Steen (who last year gave the UK premier of Forest of Dreams at Hoddinott Hall with BBC NOW) and will be performed at BBC Hoddinott Hall, Cardiff and broadcast live on Radio 3. The performance will be particularly poignant for Christopher as it comes just two days before the third anniversary of the death of his great friend and mentor, Alun Hoddinott, and in the venue dedicated to his memory. Later in 2011, the Welsh Chamber Orchestra will premiere his Violin Concerto “The Veil of Heaven” with Alexandra Wood as soloist, Nicky Spence (tenor) and Andrew Matthews-Owen (piano) will premiere a song-cycle to texts by the Very Reverend Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury and finally, so far, Claire Booth and Andrew Matthews-Owen with premiere a cycle of songs based on the Taliesin poems of Vernon Watkins.
