and two A3 - and a flat surface to work on.

The assembly process uses the techniques of Origami - the art of paper folding. There are mountain folds, valley folds, reverse folds and some locking tabs. Follow these step-by-step instructions to create your own fabulous Water Lily!

Creased linesThese are solid lines indented into the paper by the creasing

process - these are valley folds:

Perforated lines These are perforated cut lines, like a dotted line - these are to be

    mountain folds:

Valley folds and mountain foldsIf you inspect the fold lines closely on the eight parts you will see that there are two types of lines: creased and

    perforated.

Part 7Ensure that the printed part number is uppermost and make all the folds - valleys and mountains.

When finished the printed number 7 should be on the inside.

(To add detail you can gently bend the tops of the stamen outwards at the top.)

    1. Introduction 2. Snapping out 3. Pre-folding 4. Assembly 5. Finishing up

Part 8 Start with part number 8.

Ensure that the printed part number is uppermost, and make the valley folds and mountain folds as shown by the smooth or perforated lines.

When finished, the printed number 8 should be on the outside.

Then gather the sides in together so the middle points up, as shown.

Turn the piece over and gather the sides in together.

Then gather the sides in together so the middle points down, as shown.

Also, there are mountain folds on the left and right of the base of the petal.

    Mountain fold

    Valley fold

Now do the same for the other three petals.

Part 6Make the valley and mountain folds around the central hole - but don’t fold the creases in the middle of the four petals yet.

Now you have to reverse fold the petal: With the valley fold made at the base of the petal, fold the petal away from you so that the crease along the middle of the petal is a mountain fold and the fold beneath the petal is a valley fold.

Now do the same for the other three petals. Reverse fold the tips of the petals

    outwards.

Part 5As with part 6, make the valley and mountain folds around the central hole - but don’t fold the petals yet.

Now you have to reverse fold the petal:

With the valley fold made at the base of the petal, fold the petal away from you so that the crease along the middle of the petal is a mountain fold and the fold beneath the petal is a valley fold.

Now do the same for the other seven petals. The part should be bowl-shaped

    when finished.

Turn the part over so the printed number is downwards and push the middle downwards.

Part 4Make the valley and mountain folds in the middle, but don’t fold the petals yet.

    Reverse fold the petal:

With the valley fold made at the base of the petal, fold the petal away from you so that the crease along the middle of the petal is a mountain fold and the fold beneath the petal is a valley fold.

Don’t crease all the way up the petal, just halfway.

Part 3As before, make the valley and mountain folds in the middle, but don’t fold the petals yet.

    Reverse fold the petal:

With the valley fold made at the base of the petal, fold the petal away from you so that the crease along the middle of the petal is a mountain fold and the fold beneath the petal is a valley fold.

Don’t crease all the way up the petal, just halfway.

Part 1With the printed side towards you, valley fold the four petals and the four triangles between the petals up towards you.

Make the mountain folds around the octagonal base and the eight vertical creases.

Note that the mountain folds are marked in grey lines on this part.

When finished part 1 should have a flat base (printed side down), and makes a shallow boat-like tray, with the four petals curving up.

Join part 3 to part 2With the printed numbers of parts 2 & 3 facing downwards, place part 3 on top of part 2.

    4. Assembly

When finished, part 3 is held in place by the eight tabs on part 2.

Lift a tab on part 2 and slide part 3 under it so the tab locks into place in the gap between the petals.

Turn the model over to check that all the tabs are interlocked.

Work around the circle until all the tabs are in place.

The eight tabs on part 2 slot into the gap between the petals of part 3.

Your model should start to look like a water lily already!

Lock part 4 in placeTurn the model over.

Fold back the four tabs in the centre of part 2, revealing the four tabs on part 4 beneath...

...now fold the two tabs on either side back into the middle again.

Ensure the tabs interlock on each side of the tab of part 4.

...pull one of these up through the hole and fold it right back...

Check all four tabs are pulled right through and locked into place by the part 2 tabs.

When finished create a hole in the middle of the model by folding the tabs of part 2 back as well.

(This is particularly important if you intend to add a battery-powered tea light to make your lily into a lantern.)

There are three more tabs from part 4 that must be pulled through and locked into place with the interlocking tabs.

When finished the model should have a flat base, with all of the petals interlocked.

The petals of part 1 interlock between the petals of part 2.

Part 2 has tabs at the base of the petals on both sides...

Work around the circle until all the petals are secure.

Adding a tea lightIf you would like to make your water lily into a lantern, purchase a battery powered tea light (with a 1.2 inch or 34mm diameter base).

    Here is a link

    5. Finishing up

Remove the small piece of plastic protecting the battery.

Tea lights with a warm white light are best.

This particular tea light is turned on by screwing the two halves together.

These are available on Amazon or in any good hardware stores.

Remove the stamen and pop the tea light into the lily.

    Replace the stamen. Finished!
