When I last left you my car was on a flatbed tow truck being towed to the shop. Suspecting the bearings went out in the right rear wheel, I was surprised to find that the u-joints

were bad, and the bearings inside one of them were totally gone. All fixed, I picked up the car and happily drove home. Yay! The next Saturday I was all ready for the Kaneohe Christmas Parade. I met Charles and Peter at the bottom of Pacific Heights and we headed over the hill. On the way up the Pali Hwy., my car started making the same horrible noise. I turned off onto Old Pali Road and tried to figure out what I should do. I decided to drive by the repair shop on the way home, hoping they would be open. On the way there, the noise stopped after making a right turn. Was something caught between moving parts that came out? The rest of the drive home was normal. I made an appointment and took the car back in. On the way there, it started to make noise again, but not too bad. By the time I got there, it was hardly making any noise. We went for a test drive and the noise started again. By the time we got back to the shop, the noise was as horrible as ever. It was the right rear bearings after all. Just found another problem on the way to solving the original one. I hope all is well now. I would like to send a huge “Thank You” to all the members that came out to support the many Christmas parades. Along with mine, there were several other cars out of service. With your support we were able to cover our obligations for each parade. Elections for the new board are over, and it is time for me to step down and take a break. Jay Farmer will be the new Vice President, and I am sure he will do a fantastic job. I will still be an active member and will see you at the upcoming events. Have a Happy New Year!

Tim Smith Vice President

Aloha my Corvette Friends and Family, Joni and I hope you had a Merry Christmas and an outstanding start to the New Year. I would like to thank the board members for their hard work and support to the club and myself last year. WOW, how time flies when you are having so much fun. I also thank you, the club members, for your support and participation in our various events. The club sponsored 52 events in 2018, can you believe it? While I know you could not be at every event, we did have a very successful year. Last year JN Chevrolet stepped up to became our official sponsor, we supported several local charities, had dinner meetings all over the island and several breakfast events with a drive around the island, had very strong support and a great showing for the First Hawaiian Auto show, dressed up in Halloween costumes for the kids at Shriners Hospital, partnered with the Shawn Ray Hawaiian Classic body building competition for a reboot of the Corvettes in Paradise event, supported our local military for veterans day, took a Thanksgiving Day sunrise drive and breakfast, remembered our Pearl harbor survivors, participated in more parades than I can remember and elected an official Club Ambassador (Richard Long) to the National Corvette Museum. This year we are going to build on our success and fine tune some areas. Our club bylaws need updating and I need your suggestions for proposed changes. Our website and newsletter are being upgraded to keep you better informed of upcoming events and I am shooting for that 1st place win in the NCM Newsletter contest. Also, back by very popular demand will be the island wide scavenger hunt followed by a potluck dinner and more breakfast events alternating Sat/Sun followed up with a drive. Lastly, I will need your help! Please review what’s going on, call someone that you haven’t seen in a while and come out to the events.

Charles Owens

President

My experience at JN Chevrolet on buying a BRIGHT yellow 2016 Corvette convertible Stingray (7 speed 3LT) Sunday (16 Dec) morning got a text from Charles Owens asking if saw this car for sale at JN Chevrolet, he sent me some pics and I said I hadn’t and said I would go check it out. Within 90 minutes I was on the showroom floor. My first impression of the vehicle was it look like an awesome car and I just had to have it! My girlfriend went with me and she actually sat in it before I did and actually said it was nice. High praise coming from her since she hates the color yellow, even though it was my first choice. The sales team at JN worked with me a little on the price but we still didn’t quite have a deal. I went back the next day to check it out again and ask a few questions. This time I got the right price PLUS numerous oil changes a detail job and full tank of gas for free. I even got a better interest rate than my bank was offering by almost half after it was all said and done. Within 48 hours of seeing the car for the first time I was driving her home.

Thanks to the sales team at JN, Faaselia Fruean, Sales; Jason Hattori, GM; Adam Olson, Manager; and Christopher Ballard, Referral. Also thanks to Charles Owens, of our Corvette Club of Hawaii El Presidente’, it would not have happened without his help.

Now I’m just waiting on registration, safety inspection, and the title. When I get it registered into my name I am looking for ideas on what to put on the license plate, if I can’t think of one I will more than likely just get a combat veteran plate. I think I got a good deal on a great car and I'm happy JN Chevrolet’s sales team was able to work with me, it's Awesome to drive.

Drivers, this year the Club was happy to participate in five Christmas parades in various communities around the island, (i.e. Lilia Palama, Kaneohe, Kaimuki, Aiea, and Ewa Beach Lions Club). We also provided escorts for our 95+ year old WWII Veterans in the Wahiawa Veterans Day parade and several survivors for the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day parade in Waikiki. Again, an overall GREAT showing and support by so many of our members. Let me share with you some of the thank you notes, conversation and emails that I received over the last month. Josh Green, LT Governor, “Charles, I would like to thank you and the Corvette Club of Hawaii for providing the cars to the Lilia Palama Christmas Parade. It was great having my kids sitting beside me in one of those beautiful Corvettes. Your Club made it a very special event for the entire community. Thanks again.” Ralena Alcos, Coordinator for local beauty Queens, “Thanks so much Charles and the Corvette Club for providing Corvettes for our Queens. Everyone had an amazing time and enjoyed getting to know our drivers. Peter is a real gentleman and made Tiffany and I feel so comfortable! Please give our Mahalos to everyone.” Jack Brantley, Pearl Harbor Survivor (96), “IT was such a happy felling see your corvettes all lined up for us. All I have to say is you PEOPLE sure know how to put on a great remembrance of Pearl Harbor. I appreciate all of your drivers for taking the time to come out. From all of us old guys, Thanks for the Ride, I will see you next year if all goes well. GOD BLESS.” Eugene Villaluz, Cars & Coffee of Hawaii, “I said it before and I will say it again. All of the car clubs in Hawaii know that the Corvette Club of Hawaii does it the BEST. You guys always step up to help out and people notice it. Thanks for your support to our local community and the other car clubs of Hawaii. Job well done guys!” Scotty Ellison Club Member, “Christmas parade in Ewa Beach this morning. Corvette Club of Hawaii represented. Great time, Lots of Community togetherness, and the Spirit of Christmas Aloha Style!” Gary Trent Tahara Club Member, “It's true... you miss it when you don't have it…” Maak S Hi Club Member, “Lots of fun today, a very good vibe from the Westside.” As you can see by the pictures and the quotes above, WE HAD A BLAST. In case you didn’t know, Corvette Club of Hawaii has great relationships with members of the other high-end car clubs in Hawaii. Jeff Fritz, Porsche Club of Hawaii; Don Johnson, Aloha Mustang; Scot Shimamura, Cobra Car Club of Hawaii; and Rachel & Ben Baranek, Hawaii Mini Motoring Club. December Monthly Dinner – Brown Bag City Lights Walk By Tim Smith

For the December monthly dinner we again planned on bringing “brown bag” dinners to the Honolulu Civic Center grounds and then looking at the holiday lights in and around Honolulu Hale. This year since Christmas fell on the last Tuesday of the month which is the same day as the monthly board meeting, the board decided to hold it’s meeting before the monthly dinner. The board met at TJ’s Sports Bar and Grill located at 600 Kapiolani Blvd. at the split of Kapiolani and King. The location is fairly large, but a little sparse. The food however was very good. Typical local bar fare; fried rice, fried pork chops, grilled steak, edamame, poke, etc. The portions were generous, and the food tasty. After our meeting, some of the board headed home, and the rest of us walked over to the city lights display where we met up with Pam and Dennis. We waited until 7:15 in case anyone else showd up, but no one did. We then proceeded to walk around and look at the various displays, checked out the Christmas tree in front of Honolulu Hale, and then proceeded inside to look at all the trees decorated by the various city departments followed by the Christmas wreaths submitted for the annual wreath competition. In the past, we got a lot more participation from the membership. Those in attendance this year were Pam and Dennis, Patty and Peter, Elithe and Gary, Joni and Charles, and myself.

Ka Leo O Corvette - The Voice of Corvette Vol. 47 Issue 1 p. 11

By Charles Owens Tool time is now over 2 years old. So, Let’s revisit some of the proper SAFETY NOTICE to everyone reading this series from the Corvette Club of Hawaii (CCoH) magazines informal articles. Proper service and repair procedures are vital to the safe, reliable operation of your Corvette, as well as the personal safety of those performing repairs. Most of the information I’m going to share with you comes directly from the open internet, so feel free to confirm all information provided as a recommendation only before you start a project. I will outline simple procedures for servicing and repairing vehicles using safe, effective methods. The procedures we will talk about contain NOTES, CAUTIONS and WARNINGS which should be followed along with standard safety procedures to eliminate the possibility of personal injury or improper service which could damage your Corvette or compromise its safety. It is important to note that repair procedures and techniques, tools and parts for servicing motors, as well as the skill and experience of the individual performing the work vary widely. It is not possible to anticipate all of the conceivable ways or conditions under which Corvettes may be serviced, or to provide cautions as to all of the possible hazards that may result. Standard and accepted safety precautions and equipment should be used when handling toxic or flammable fluids, and safety goggles or other protection should be used during cutting, grinding, chiseling, prying, or any other process that can cause material removal or projectiles. Some procedures require the use of specialty tools designed for a specific purpose. Before substituting another tool or procedure, you must be completely satisfied that neither your personal safety, nor the performance of the vehicle will be endangered. Although the information we will be looking at is based on industry internet sources the possibility exists that the manufacturer made changes which could not be included here. While striving for total accuracy, I/we at CCoH cannot assume responsibility for any errors, changes, or omissions that may occur in the compilation of this data. With all of that being said let’s get started. Basic garage safety when servicing your Corvette at home. It is virtually impossible to anticipate all of the hazards involved with Corvette maintenance and service but care and common sense will prevent most accidents. The rules of safety for mechanic’s range from "don't smoke around gasoline," to "use the proper tool for the job." The trick to avoiding injuries is to develop safe work habits and take every possible precaution. Let’s look at some of the Do’s and Don’ts. Do's

• Do keep a fire extinguisher and first aid kit within easy reach. • Do wear safety glasses or goggles when cutting, drilling, grinding or prying, even if you have 20-20 vision. If

you wear glasses for the sake of vision, then they should be made of hardened glass that can serve also as safety glasses, or wear safety goggles over your regular glasses.

• Do shield your eyes whenever you work around the battery. Batteries containing acid; in case of contact with the eyes or skin, flush the area with water or a mixture of water and baking soda and get medical attention immediately.

• Do use safety stands for any undercar service. Jacks are for raising vehicles; safety stands are for making sure the vehicle stays raised until you want it to come down. Whenever the vehicle is raised, block the wheels remaining on the ground and set the parking brake.

• Do use adequate ventilation when working with any chemicals. Like carbon monoxide, the asbestos dust resulting from brake lining wear can be poisonous in sufficient quantities.

Page 12: orvette lub of Hawaii orvette lub Established 1973 …corvetteclubhawaii.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/JAN...get it registered into my name I am looking for ideas on what to put on

Ka Leo O Corvette - The Voice of Corvette Vol. 47 Issue 1 p. 12

• Do disconnect the negative battery cable when working on the electrical system. The primary ignition system can contain up to 40,000 volts.

• Do follow manufacturer's directions whenever working with potentially hazardous materials. Both brake fluid and antifreeze are poisonous if taken internally.

• Do properly maintain your tools. Loose hammerheads, mushroomed punches and chisels, frayed or poorly grounded electrical cords, excessively worn screwdrivers, spread wrenches (open end), cracked sockets, slip ping ratchets, or faulty droplight sockets can cause accidents.

• Do use the proper size and type of tool for the job being done. • Do when possible, pull on a wrench handle rather than push on it, and adjust your stance to prevent a fall. • Do be sure that adjustable wrenches are tightly adjusted on the nut or bolt and pulled so that the face is on

the side of the fixed jaw. • Do select a wrench or socket that fits the nut or bolt. The wrench or socket should sit straight, not cocked. • Do strike squarely with a hammer—avoid glancing blows. • Do set the parking brake and block the drive wheels if the work requires that the engine be running.

Don’ts

• Don't run an engine in a garage or anywhere else without proper ventilation— EVER! Carbon monoxide is poisonous; it takes a long time to leave the human body and you can build up a deadly supply of it in your system by simply breathing in a little every day. You may not realize you are slowly poisoning yourself. Always use power vents, windows, fans or open the garage doors.

• Don't work around moving parts while wearing a necktie or other loose clothing. Short sleeves are much safer than long, loose sleeves and hard-toed shoes with neoprene soles protect your toes and give a better grip on slippery surfaces. Jewelry such as watches, fancy belt buckles, beads or body adornment or any kind is not safe working around a car. Long hair should be hidden under a hat or cap.

• Don't use pockets for toolboxes. A fall or bump can drive a screwdriver deep into your body. Even a wiping cloth hanging from the back pocket can wrap around a spinning shaft or fan.

• Don't smoke when working around gasoline, cleaning solvent or other flammable material. • Don't smoke when working around the battery. When the battery is being charged, it gives off explosive

hydrogen gas. • Don't use gasoline to wash your hands; there are excellent soaps available. Engine fluids contain toxic

chemicals, and can enter the body through cuts accumulating in the body until you are very ill. Gasoline also removes all the natural oils from the skin so that bone dry hands will absorb oil and grease.

• Don't service the air conditioning system unless you are equipped with the necessary tools and training. The refrigerant, R-12, is extremely cold and when exposed to the air, will instantly freeze any surface it comes in contact with, including your eyes. Although the refrigerant is normally non-toxic, R-12 becomes a deadly poisonous gas in the presence of an open flame. One good whiff of the vapors from burning refrigerant can be fatal.

(editors note: R-12 refrigerant is not available for purchase without a license and was replaced in 1996 with R-134A, If you own an older vehicle that has an R-12 A/C unit, you will either have to take it to an authorized licensed A/C mechanic or have the unit converted to use R-134A. For more details visit: https://originalair.com/converting-to-134a-general-motors)

Now that we have covered some basic garage safety, I’m sure some of you are thinking WOW, I didn’t know that, or I didn’t think of that. Always, always remember safety first and your garage team members will survive the event to tell about them at the next meeting. Moving on, every subject we will cover at CCoH is basic skills that any person whom has a set of used tools can do. I did say used tools because if you have tools still sitting in the original plastic then you should start off by helping someone as an extra set of hands before tackling any mechanical project on your corvette. Next month we will get into basic evaluation of if you need a tune-up or not.

Ka Leo O Corvette - The Voice of Corvette Vol. 47 Issue 1 p. 14

Ka'ahupahau Shark Goddess of Pu'uloa Ray Burke has got to be the happiest Air traffic controller in Hawaii. He got himself a LT3 for Christmas!!!!! This honking jock has 72 hours to see if everything is “All systems go” before sealing the deal and he is taking full advantage whipping his 460 hp baby around Aiea and the entire Pu'uloa district that boarders Pearl Harbor and the entire coastline of 'Ewa Beach. This may be a Stingray, but it looks more like a shark out of water slicing through air chewing up the road.

Interestingly, the district Ray lives in was once the domain of a Hihimanu (stingray) changeling Shark Goddess Ka'ahupahau who changed form at will depending on the circumstances. She and her two brothers Kahi'pahu and Kahi'uka guarded the entrance and waters of Pearl Harbor. In the ancient past, shark guardians patrolled and protected the islanders who lived along the coastline. These were benevolent shark demi-gods who were cared for and loved by the people who lived there. By tradition, and mutual agreement, Ka'ahupahau and her brothers protected the sea life and humans along the 'Ewa coast and inland waters Pearl Harbor from marauding man-eating sharks.

Kahi’uka was the first to sound the alarm, this shark had the ability to swim upstream, transform into a changeling fisherman and warn the villagers. In battle his sister, Ka'ahupahau would spew a slimy net of encrusted crab, Pipipi mollusk, oyster shells, and molted bird feathers to entangle her enemies and drown them. Often, her brother, younger brother Kahi'pahu, would join her in the fry using his enormous tail as his weapon. Kahi’pahu used his tail as a deadly hammer. He often helped his sister by pummeling the trapped marauders in his sisters’ crusty net of slime. During the heat of the battle and sounding like a Pahu Drum, Kahi'pahu would roundly slap the water with his tail to alarm the villagers that man-eating sharks had entered their domain. Upon hearing his drumming tail bashing the waters, the villagers would rush to the shoreline and haul the slimy net of the shark Goddess Ka'ahupahau ashore and club the man-eating marauders to death.

In return the grateful villagers would lovingly hand feed Ka'ahupahau and her brothers. These villagers also performed the tedious chore of scrubbing and scraping irritating barnacles off their backs. This was the most appreciated symbiotic gesture the shark Goddess and her brothers shared with the villagers. There are many stories of this famous shark goddess and photos of Pu'uloa (Pearl Harbor) as there are Corvette owners who live in this area so stay tune for more legends to come. 'A hui hou (until then).

A man decided that he was going to ride a 10-speed bike from Phoenix to Flagstaff. He got as far as Black Canyon City before the mountains became just too much and he could go no further. He stuck his thumb out, but after 3 hours, he hadn't gotten a single person to stop. Finally, a guy in a Corvette pulled over and offered him a ride. Of course, the bike wouldn't fit in the car. The corvette owner found a piece of rope lying by the highway and tied it to his bumper. He tied the other end to the bike and told the man that if he was going to fast, to honk the horn on his bike and he would slow down. Everything went fine for the first 30 miles. Suddenly, another Corvette blew past them. Not to be outdone, the Corvette pulling the bike took off after the other. A short distance down the road, the Corvettes, both going well over 120 mph, blew through a speed trap. The police officer noted the speed from his radar gun and radio to the other officer that he has two Corvettes headed his way at over 120 mph. HE then relayed, "... and you're not going to believe this, but there's a guy on a 10-speed bike honking to pass!"

Well, there you have it folks, this is the end of the road, at least for me as the Editor of the Corvette Club of Hawaii’s newsletter. I have a lot of projects I am working on and while I enjoyed being your editor it is probably the most time consuming board position (although that may just be a reflection of my lack of efficiency). I have to install a new wiring harness and rebuild the engine in my ‘79 MGB, paint the outside of my house, finish an excavation project, install bamboo flooring in my living room and fix the tile in the kitchen, install new carpeting in the master bed room, and replace most of my deck. I also want to get started on the ’08 C6 rebuild, I’m toying with the idea of using it as a donor for a C1 Rest-O-Mod, and I have to rebuild the front differential for my ‘04 Avalanche. On top of all that I am considering going back to school for a second Master’s in Disaster Management.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the newsletter over the past year, Keep up the great work. Special thanks goes to Tim Smith for his multiple contributions every month. Tim provided all the event calendars, the Shotgun Seat entry, coordinated a vast majority of our events, and provided almost all of the monthly dinner reviews. Charles Owens, on top of running the show, contributed the Tool Time articles, the Driver’s Seat entry, and several other articles. Hank’s Hut from Hank Ah Hee. And a very special thank you to Dr. Elithe Kahn, PhD., for her monthly Hawaiian cultural contributions to Sidelines. I hope you will all continue to support the newsletter with your outstanding contributions.

I am leaving your newsletter in the capable hands of your newly elected Editor, Mike Davis. With Mike’s experience in publishing I believe the newsletter will win the coveted 1st Place in the National Corvette Museum Newsletter Competition. However it is up to us as members to provide Mike with the support he needs in the form of articles, photos, and announcements to ensure he can publish the newsletter on time every month.

A Sincere Thank you,

Dan Vancil (Ed)
