THE CALLIGRAPHY OF MUSICTuesdays, 1:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m.Dates: 4 Sessions, June 3–June 24Instructor: Jon Newsom

Musical notation can be a calligraphic art beyondits necessary function as a composer’s only wayof showing performers what he wants them toplay. Without even knowing thecraft of musical notation, you can be drawn intothe musical creative process. We will explore themanuscripts and the music they represent fromthe Middle Ages to Stravinsky and Gershwin. Wewill hear the sounds of great music first presentedin performances from calligraphic masterpieces.Handouts will include color reproductions ofsamples of manuscripts from the Library ofCongress and many other collections whosetreasures have been published in faithfulfacsimiles. That done, someone asked for another such course so heeventually did a 20-week course on Tolstoy’sWar & Peace. Now, he wants to get back tomusic and with the resources he has gatheredfrom his Library of Congress career, he wants toshow manuscripts of Bach, Beethoven andBrahms, along with other usual suspects fromthe Middle Ages to Gershwin.
