George Washington Slept Here: Barbados and How His Brief Stay in Barbados Had

Major Implications A Quarter Of A Century Later For Fledgling America.

A young George Washington’s visit to Barbados influenced the American

Revolution. Instead of a pleasant winter trip to an idyllic tropical paradise, George

becomes seriously ill and while recuperating educates himself on the

    island’s military defenses.

Join us to learn how this “working vacation” played an important role in

General Washington’s career. Meanwhile, the Declaration of Independence may

have had roots in Barbados and the Treaty of Oistins. Did Thomas Jefferson lift a

major chunk of that treaty as basis for the document?

    6/5/2020 Friday Blues & Bluegrass

Just after the Civil War in America, many free black men & ex-slave musicians took to a newer and cheaper instrument, the

guitar, because the banjo, used in vaudeville and black-face shows, was too

    closely associated with slavery.

The Blues was born of this time, a way for a black man to express his pain and/or anger with a racist America, without being too threatening to the white

    establishment.

The Blues today is considered the roots of American music, from it, has developed

everything from Jazz to Rock & Roll.

In this class, we will examine the Blues and how one branch developed into a

    new musical genre, Bluegrass.

"Big Jack Zelig", so called because of height, was the first real Jewish gang lord

    in New York City.

Although the Eastman gang came before him, when Monk Eastman died and his funeral was conducted by a Protestant Minister, they first realized that he was

not in fact Jewish, so that Jack Zelig deserves that title.

World of our Fathers: Jacob Riis and the Old Lower East Side

Multi-Media Lecture Presented By Ronelle Delmont

The Old Lower East Side of New York City has had a lasting impact on the whole of American society and no one had a more

important role in the making of its history than crime reporter, Jacob Riis.

Police Commissioner Teddy Roosevelt referred to Riis as “the most important

citizen of New York City.” This entertaining history will be revived in a slide show lecture filled with Jacob Riis’ photographs from his ground- breaking

book – How the Other Half Lives, published in 1894.

Ronelle will also present a digital “tour”

of the most popular New York City attraction – the Lower East Side Tenement

    Museum at 69 Orchard Street.

"The Black Plague" actually refers to the Bubonic Plague, which swept through

The Plague occurred again, several times in the same century and in each of the centuries that followed, including the
