Preaching in a Time of Crisis

1pm—3pm, via Zoom Free. Led by Rt Revd Prof Tom Wright, former Bishop of Durham

We have all been living through a time of crisis as the world has sought to manage the COVID-19 pan-

demic, the press and politicians warn of difficult economic times ahead, and many are now talking of

a climate crisis. We cannot close our eyes to the problems the world is facing, and yet Christians are

called to preach Good News. How can we do that in a time of crisis? How can our preaching both

challenge and reassure people by helping them to see God at work even in dark times? Join us as New

Testament scholar, theologian and former Bishop of Durham, Tom Wright, helps us to explore these

questions and look at how we can be effective preachers in a time of crisis.

The Value of Preaching in Ministry

11.00am—1pm, via Zoom Free. Led by Rt Revd John Pritchard, former Bishop of Oxford What is the role of the sermon in today's Church? As our society become more visual, where infor-

mation is delivered in 240 characters, people want to be moved by the experience of worship, and truth

is often felt to be relative, what is the value of preaching in ministry? The Rt Revd John Pritchard, for-

mer Bishop of Oxford and author of numerous books on the Christian faith, prayer, and ministry will

explore this very important question, looking at the value preaching still brings to ministry and how we,

as preachers, can preach with confidence, knowing that what we are offering remains an important and

valuable part of ministry today.

Contemplative Prayer, 10am-4pm, All Saints Church, Patcham BN1 8YU Free. 15 places Led by Revd Dr Earl Collins This workshop will discuss Christian contemplative prayer. The focus will be on two famous figures in the tradition, both celebrated for their profound spiritual insight - Evagrius in the East and Augustine in the West. Two traditional methods of prayer will be examined, the Orthodox ‘Jesus Prayer’ and the modern practice of ‘centring prayer.’ We will also look at the explosion of interest in mindfulness and critically consider how it relates to the awareness of God that is the goal of contemplative prayer. Since the workshop will be not only theoretical but practical, two short periods of contemplative prayer will be built into the day.

Recognising and Managing Trauma 9.30am—1pm, Church House, 211 New Church Road, Hove BN3 4ED Free. 15 places Led by Nicola Canham Trauma is defined as that which overwhelms our capacity to cope with our experience and which breaks connections — to ourselves, to others, to resources, to our frames of reference. Many people’s experience of the Covid-19 pandemic will conform to this definition. How you as a leader respond and manage trauma will affect how those you lead also respond. This basic workshop will help you gain awareness of what resources you need to help you recognise and cope with trauma and also raise awareness of the compounding effect of vicarious trauma.

Science and Religion workshop - God of creation or God of the gaps? 9.30am—1pm, Church House, 211 New Church Road, Hove BN3 4ED Free. 15 places Led by Revd Dr Mathew Philip Mathew Philip will look at the belief that as science explains more and more of nature, there is less and less need for God. Many scientists see that scientific progress is making God redundant. We are seen to hold on to God only to explain what hasn't been explained yet. He will hope to explore the developments in science over the past 150 years, from the time of James Clerk Maxwell.

Centred on God: Learning from the Christian Mystics — 2 day retreat

10am 20 May—3.30pm 21 May, Wychcroft Resource & Retreat Centre, RH1 4NE Free. 15 places Led by Revd Dr Earl Collins

With a generally heavy round of duties and responsibilities many clergy yearn to develop a deeper dimension to their lives. This retreat will draw on insights from the Christian mystics (particularly Julian of Norwich and Meister Eckhart) for outlining an authentic Christian mysticism. Through short talks and guided reading, we will look at issues such as finding the ground of the self in God, darkness and light in the spiritual life, experiencing God, and coping with temptation and spiritual dryness. The aim is to foster a deeper personal connection with God – the indispensable heart of all ministry.

The 4 Mores (1) - MORE OPEN: A SIGN OF BEING ONE 1-4pm, Church House, 211 New Church Road, Hove BN3 4ED Free. 15 places. Led by Revd Rob Dillingham and Revd Dr Earl Collins 1 CORINTHIANS 12: 12-13 ‘Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptised by one spirit so as to form one body.’

This workshop will look at both a practical, theological and personal application for how:

• To understand the four mores and their purpose and impact on the life of the parish and diocese.

• To consider how to be more representative of the community that the parish serves.

• To develop, implement and analyse a community audit, to ensure we are reaching out to and serving under-represented groups in our parishes.

• To think through existing and new patterns of worship, to ensure they are authentic in the Christian tradition and can speak into this age & culture, particularly in light of the coronavirus.

• To look at and review what regular youth & children’s focussed provision, the parish has or can start and how that is benefited by linking to others through the diocesan HUB networks.

• To consider how to improve links with local church and community schools, if the parish has one.

• To consider how to reach out to new building estates within the parish boundaries.

Managing Relationships for Clergy and their Partners 9.30am—4pm, Church House, 211 New Church Road, Hove BN3 4ED Free. 20 places. Led by Revd Canon Peter Wells Feeling judged by others, and judging others, is a very common feeling and experience. This can lead to how I view myself and how I respond to others. But do I know how I might be experienced by others, do I know how I experience myself. Jung's Psychological Type Scale aims to help us appreciate who we and others are without judgement. The Revd Canon Professor Leslie Francis developed a version of Jung's scale (FPTS) aimed at clergy and how this relates to other areas of their lives. The day will give opportunity for participants to look at their personal response to the type scale and how this relates to themselves and to others. The day will respect participants confidentiality and offer support to look further at the issues which arise.

PCC’s matter. They matter a lot. A healthy and functioning PCC enables a church to focus on what matters most. But such PCC’s don’t just happen, they come about through thoughtful, loving and creative leadership. This course is designed to enable an incumbent to run an efficient PCC, so the PCC may help the church fulfil the mission and ministry in that place.

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, 2 day retreat 10am 24 Nov-3pm 25 Nov, The Oast Houses, Tufton Lane, Northiam TN31 6HL Free. 20 places. Led by Danny Wignall 'It’s impossible to be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature' says Pete Scazzero, author of 'Emotionally Healthy Spirituality'.

Yet, too often as Christians when we ignore the emotional component of our lives, we move through the motions of Christian disci-plines, activities and behaviours, but deeply rooted behavioural patterns from our past continue to hinder us from an authentic life of maturity in Christ. We often neglect to reflect on what is going on inside us and around us (emotional health) and are too busy to slow down to be with God (contemplative spirituality).

As a result we run the high risk of remaining stuck as spiritual infants failing to develop into spiritually/emotionally mature adults in Christ.

As a result of this two day retreat we hope that together we will all discover how emotional health and contemplative spirituality, when interwoven together, offer nothing short of a spiritual revolution, transforming the hidden places deep beneath the surface of our lives – changing forever the way we love God, love others and love ourselves.

Ministry and Contemplative Living 9.30am-1pm, Church House, 211 New Church Road, Hove BN3 4ED Free. 15 places Led by Revd Dr Paul Redparth Ministry at the present time can be hard and confusing. Julian of Norwich 10am—2pm, Church House, 211 New Church Road, Hove BN3 4ED Free. 15 places Led by Revd Dr Earl Collins The English mystical writer (1343-c.1416) Julian of Norwich recorded her spiritual experience in Revelations of Divine Love, the first surviving book written in English by a woman. Although an anchorite, (a hermit), Julian’s interpretation of her vision of Christ crucified speaks powerfully to a wide variety of Christians nowadays, clergy and lay. Her rethinking of such doctrines as grace and sin and her vivid and imaginative way of presenting God as love are both spiritually stimulating and prophetically provocative. This workshop will offer a general introduction to her work, before considering three topics in more detail: her understanding of Christ, her thoughts on the Trinity, and what she meant by prayer. We will read sections of her work together and explore what she can say to us as contemporary Christians seeking to deepen our faith and pray in a more contemplative way.

Chichester University MA in Christian Ministry

3 years, part-time.

The MA in Christian Ministry has been specifically developed to meet the needs of Christian ministers, predominantly those working in local churches. A diverse and exciting range of modules will enhance your theological and ministerial practice.

This course will:

• Enhance and enrich your ministry and practice

• Help you gain new insights for your ministerial practice

• Develop your theological knowledge and expertise

• Enable you to reflect creatively on practical issues and questions

• Give you confidence in your theological skills

For those recommended by their church authorities, the fee is £1,500 per annum for each of the three years. For those applying from the Diocese of Chichester a fee arrangement is in place which allows students to study for a much reduced rate.

St Augustine's MA in Theology, Ministry and Mission

The St Augustine’s MA in Theology, Ministry and Mission is a specially tailored programme of theological learning and research that allows lay and ordained ministers, as well as church members, to deepen their theological knowledge by building on previous theological learning, engaging with daily life and ongoing experience of the Body of Christ.

Accredited and awarded by Durham University, the degree includes both taught modules and guided research in a theological discipline of your choice. It offers opportunities to develop advanced skills as part of your continuing ministerial development e.g. in pastoral supervision, leadership, mission, spirituality.

The degree can be taken part-time or full-time. Much of the teaching is delivered alongside candidates for church ministry, but the programme is suitable for all, irrespective of any ministerial involvement.

Since the MA aims for a more critical mode of engagement with theology and ministry, the teaching sessions and much of the contact time will take the form of seminars, during which you will discuss texts with teachers and fellow students and present your own work.

The course is designed for lay and ordained ministers, or church members, who wish to deepen their theological knowledge by building on previous theological learning. To undertake the MA, you must have completed either a degree in theology or ministry or a degree in another subject combined with an additional qualification in theology or ministry.

Safeguarding for Clergy and Parish

The hub for all information, resources, news and events relating to safeguarding children and adults throughout the life of the Diocese. It also introduces a new tool - 'Safer Quality Protects' - which will help parishes to assess and improve their own safeguarding practice, whilst providing useful resources to enable them to achieve this goal. Safeguarding is a complex area of church life - how do we keep children and adults safe from harm, whilst building communities of trust and openness, and still demonstrate the welcome the Gospel offers to all? Moreover, how do we build church communities that obey the biblical mandate to defend those who are weak, heal those who are hurt, and demonstrate God's forgiveness to all, for all have sinned? This site is intended to provide people in parishes with a 'one stop shop' for all things safe-

guarding.

Wellbeing for Clergy and Families

“In my experience the journey of ministry can be joyful and fulfilling but can also be stormy, scary and turbulent. Clergy, their partners and their families at times walk on a very real tightrope, with many demands upon us. There will be times for all of us when we need pastoral care and support” Archdeacon Fiona. The Diocese of Chichester is committed to promoting and sustaining the Wellbeing of our clergy and their families. Nicola Canham, Head of Wellbeing for Clergy and their Families (WCF), is employed by the DOC to provide the WCF services for clergy and their families. We provide Reflective Practice Groups (RPG’s), counselling for clergy, couples and families, de-briefing sessions for clergy after a traumatic event, psychoeducational groups e.g. anxiety and depression, stress management and wellbeing activities e.g. Christian mindfulness.
