This project seeks to ensure the protection and wel-fare of refugees and asylum seekers in Rwanda. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee (MIDI-MAR) on behalf of the Government of Rwanda en-sures the protection of refugees and asylum seekers. Over 80% of the refugees’ population is located in six refugee camps of Rwanda, while just under 20% of the population lives in the greater urban areas of Ki-gali and Huye.

Numbers of refugees in camps:

• The total refugees in Rwanda are 170,985includ-ing 161,958 refugees individually registered, 225 registered at reception centres , and 8,802 asylum seekers

• 128,311 refugees are living in different Refugee Camps

• Burundians refugees make up 52 % of the total refugee in Rwanda

• Children make up 50.4% for all refugee people

• The women and children are 78%

• The average family size is 3 individual / family

MIDIMAR in coordination with UNHCR continue to ensure the delivery of protection and multi-sector as-sistance by project partners to refugees residing in the six refugee camps, three reception centres (Ga-tore,BugeseraandNyanza),twotransitcentres(Nya-rushishi in Rusizi District and Kijote in Nyabihu Dis-trict)andtoasylumseekersintheurban.

MIDIMAR also continues to be responsible for the overall camp management, security and safety of the persons of concern.

1. Provision of sustainable energy to refugees

• It aimed at having all households in refugee camps and transit centers provided with domes-tic source of energy.

• Atotalnumberof56,833steresoffirewoodweredistributed to 135,685 refugees in all refugee camps and transit centers.

2. Provision with potable water to PoC in Transit centers

• Refugees or Rwandan returnees are provid-ed with potable water and their facilities are maintained.

• 20 litres of potable water was availed per individ-ual and per day in both transit centers for Rwan-dan returnees.

3. Carry out the sensitization campaign for hy-giene, environment and nutrition

• 4000 households were trained/sensitized on the use of energy saving stoves, training has been conducted for refugees from family size 13 to family size 5

• 3799/3946 households (from family size 5 to familysize13)inMahamarefugeecampgoten-ergy saving stoves to protect environment during the mass distribution.

• 456 refugee representatives from the village to the executive level were trained on their roles and responsibilities, camp rules and regulations, GBV, Child protection, refugee laws, good governance and community policing and anti-drugs.

5. Provide Domestic fuel in all refugee Camps , Transit centres and reception centres

• 16,529.78 steres of firewood have been distrib-uted to refugees of 6 camps and 6 Transit Centres

6. Secure and manage the refugee camp

To make sure that the camps are secured and effec-tively managed, the project has put in place the guard-ing system. The guards have been enrolled in camps as demonstrated by the following number of guards per camp:

• 10 in Mahama Camp

• 2 in Nyabiheke camp

• 2 in Gihembe camp

• 2 in Kiziba camp

• 2 in Kigeme Camp

• 6 in Kijote Camp

• 2 in Mugombwa camp

• 5 Nyarushishi Camp

• 2 Nyanza camp

• 2 Gatore camp

• 2 BugeseraEnergy saving stoves have been provide in camps

Portable water has been availed in camps
