INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

Judo was originated by Dr. Jigoro Kano in 1882. Professor Kano was born in 1860 and by early adulthood had been practicing Shin’yo-ryu and Kito-ryu forms of ju-jutsu. Disturbed by the potential for injury, he tried to create a means of exercise and defence without weapons taking the best features of the jujutsu forms that he knew.

Professor Kano founded the Kodokan in 1882 in Tokyo as the home for the teaching of Judo, and it has remained open to this day although in a new location. Judo was proved superior to jujutsu in 1886 when Kodokan judokas defeated jujutsu pro-ponents in 13 of 15 bouts while drawing the remaining 2 bouts. Since then, Judo has become a world renowned sport.

Basically, Judo is the principle of using an opponent’s strength and momentum against himself. Anyone not lying down is inherently unstable. Moving and generating momentum simply increases that instability. Judo is the art/science of using these weaknesses against the opponent and taking him to the mat. Then, immobilization and choking techniques are used to secure the opponent. The old saying that a small person with good judo skills can defeat a larger stronger opponent is correct. However, when skill is equal, strength and weight can play important parts in a judo bout.

Judo taught in the Ottawa Judo Club is Kodokan Judo. Unlike other martial arts, the teaching of Judo is controlled and focused. The absolute source for information on Kodokan Judo is the appropriate book only - Kodokan Judo by Jigoro Kano.

The principle of cooperation (jita kyoei), working for mutual welfare and benefit. The principle of maximum efficiency (seiryoku zenyo), using least amount of effort to achieve the greatest results.
