PERMANENT LOCATION!!

LISBURN RACQUETS CLUB,

36 BELFAST ROAD, LISBURN, BT27 4AS

UNESCO have declared Judo as the best initial training sport for children and

young people 4-21 years old, since it allows:

“A comprehensive physical education, enhancing, through knowledge of the

sport, all psychomotor possibilities (spatial location, perspective,

ambidexterity, laterality, throwing, pushing, crawling, jumping, rolling,

falling, independent joint coordination of both hands and feet, etc.) and

relationship with others, using play and fight like element integrator-dynamic

and introducing technical and tactical sport initiation of shape adapted; in

addition to seeking a general, ideal fitness.”

WHAT IS JUDO? JUDO is an Olympic sport. More than that, it is an art form. Dr. Jigoro Kano, a Japanese educationalist, founded judo in 1882. Dr. Kano believed that a system of safe techniques taken from jiu-jutsu could be used in the Japanese education system to develop physical and mental improvement. JUDO is the only martial art that is a permanent fixture at both Olympics and Paralympic level. Dr. Kano formulated two mottos that he considered paramount in developing the philosophy of Judo:

MAXIMUM EFFECT WITH MINIMUM EFFORT and

MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER Judo is accessible to players of all ages, to both male and female judoka and to those with disabilities.

Judo has much to offer, including physical and mental coordination, building confidence, promoting health and well-being, keeping fit and most importantly, increasing participation and having FUN!

Judo is a recognised sport within the United Kingdom Physical Education curriculum at primary and secondary level.

CLUBMARK

THE JUDO ACADEMY firstly achieved local government in 2012. It was one of the

first sports clubs in Lisburn to achieve this status. Since then, the club has been reviewed and evaluated on two occasions and has been used as a case study for good practice by Sport Ni and Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council.

The programme aims to identify, develop, accredit and recognise high quality sports clubs and the contribution that they make to the development of sport in Northern Ireland.

To gain Clubmark NI accreditation, clubs are required to evidence compliance with the core Clubmark NI criteria and sport specific criteria.

Criteria include;

1. Effective Management

2. Quality Coaching and Competition

3. Safety in Sport

Sport Northern Ireland value the essential and significant role that sports clubs play in the development of sport:

providing outlets for participation

quality environments for talented young athletes to develop and

competitive opportunities offered by clubs are yet another key opportunity for participation and development.

“The Judo Academy upholds the principle that all children, regardless of age, culture, disability, gender, language, racial origin, religious belief or sexual identity have the right to protection from abuse. LONG TERM PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

THE JUDO ACADEMY follows the competition guidelines and structure promoted in

the BJA Long Term Athlete Development Programme (LTADP).

This is a model by one of the world’s leading authorities for LTAD, Dr. Istvan Balyi. He has developed a model of progression for all age categories, for boys and girls that gives specific guidelines on the things that should be coached at each given age group.

Dr. Balyi also highlights the need for the correct type of training and the correct competitive framework at each age level.

The Judo Academy has players from 5 years to 55 years old. Many members have been with us for 10 years or more and it is this capacity to retain members that differentiates The Judo Academy from other clubs.

Further information can be found on the LTAD model at: http://www.britishjudo.org.uk/

THE PROGRAMMES

All Judo Academy programmes are bespoke, progressive and centred on the

needs of the individual. The Judo Academy does not charge a membership fee

and programme costs will be based on the needs of the client.

For information on costs, please contact us with your requirements. The Judo

Academy will do everything possible to provide opportunities for all.

1. After Schools Programme The Judo Academy will come to your school and develop a fundamental skills programme that will allow children to progress through the skills, techniques and coloured belts in the comfort their own school. We will deliver judo to children from P2 upwards and can accommodate up to 30 children per class. The programme includes a high focus on physical literacy with gymnastic style rolls, tumbles, balance, hand eye coordination, core strength, movement and team based activities.

2. ‘School to Dojo’ / Community Development Initiative The Judo Academy will encourage young people to participate in sport and live a continually healthy life outside school. The ‘exit’ strategy allows opportunities to move ahead with their sporting career through the provision of community academies and complimentary classes that can sustain and maintain participation and development.

3. Performance Programme

With direct links to NI talent Squads, The Judo Academy can prepare potential candidates for advancing to national programmes. This programme includes access to 1/1 technical sessions, leading edge fitness testing, targeted strength and conditioning sessions and a progressive competition and training regime.

4. Family Fitness

It's never too late to become active! This initiative continues to be successful, with circuit based fitness classes that the whole family can be involved in. Practical sessions aimed at improving posture, balance, coordination, core strength and general fitness have developed great camaraderie and friendships among parents and volunteers. You don’t need to be a Judo player to participate in health and fitness programme, come and join us, along with parents and others just looking to improve their health at our fitness classes. In addition to enhancing your quality of life and ability to pursue your interests, physical activity for adults plays an important role in preventing health problems and managing those common disorders that might already be present such as diabetes, high blood pressure, depression and elevated cholesterol. Significant health benefits can be seen by including just a moderate amount of exercise into your lifestyle. The key for us, is not in a quick fix, sticking plaster approach, it is a timely, accurate and comprehensive programme based on good education and information to underpin lifestyle changes.

5. Strength & Conditioning Programme

Strength and conditioning is an essential part of athletic development, or even a fitness enthusiast looking for something a little different to the day to day gym experience. Here at The Judo Academy we have partnered with Lear Training and SCRAM Health to offer a range of performance, health and fitness programmes. The sessions start with mobility, activation and movement preparation and gradually progress to include a full range of exercises to develop strength, speed, power, endurance and agility. These programmes are carefully compiled by qualified conditioning coaches. Each athlete receives support programmes and additional information and guidelines to support their athletic development.

6. 1/1 Judo Coaching

Learn the techniques of judo from a ‘champion’, N.Ireland, British and World champion lead coach, Stephen McCluskey. Understand the principles that make judo one of the most diverse and populist sports in the world. 1/1 coaching to progress through grades, improve existing and develop new techniques, progressive competition training, coach education and bespoke training programmes.

7. Inclusion Programme

Judo is a sport that is accessible to all levels of ability. The Judo Academy teaches judo to a wide range of ages and abilities. We offer 4 and 6 week progressive courses that can introduce people to the wide range of benefits associated with judo, balance, coordination, movement and flexibility. We are a fully inclusive sports club and our coaches have attended DSNI and NGB workshops in this area. Contact us directly for more information.

8. ‘This Girl Can’

We offer a focused fitness, self-defence and judo class for women and girls. The aim is to promote self-confidence, healthy living and socialisation in the community. There are already a team of young girls and teenagers involved in The Judo Academy and our goal is to encourage young leaders to initiate and build a programme for other women and girls to be part of and guide their own direction in sport and fitness.

9. Summer Camps

THE JUDO ACADEMY have developed school holiday programmes to give both

existing members, and those that have not done judo before, the opportunity to meet the team of coaches, players, and volunteers that make The Judo Academy.

These programmes are fully structured and give the participants a full range of activities that are involved in judo, including fundamental movement skills, gymnastics for judo, strength and conditioning for judo, wrestling for judo and a range of complimentary activities to improve coordination.

10. Festivals of Judo

THE JUDO ACADEMY endeavours to bring out the best in every individual by

allowing freedom of expression through Judo. The quagmire of groundwork and standing techniques allows students to find their own way of doing, and in this way instils self-belief and competence.

It is our belief that all players taking part in Judo classes should have the opportunity to practice their skills without fear of failure, and without fear of injury.

Our Judo Festivals provide an excellent arena for young judoka to do just that, try their skills and techniques without the idea of losing. We believe that this will help create an environment where all judoka can, 'Be the best they can be'.
