Key Performance Indicators

1. 864 girls participated

2. All were girls from 11-17 years old

40 sessions/groups taken

20 coaching days completed

2 coaches

100 hours coaching

3. 4 girls were recorded in school as having a disability, 1 with

rickets, 1 special education learning needs, 1 with a bone growth

development impairment and 1 with a spinal disorder.

4. 60% of the girls live in the surrounding district electoral areas of Black Mountain, Collin and Court in West Belfast; Oldpark and Castle area in North Belfast, all of which have been identified in the Belfast Agenda as Areas of High Social Need.

5. 2 Judo Academy lead coaches, one male and one female were

used in the project, as per recommendation by NGB Safeguarding officer.

6. Success Story

As a result of the project and its promotion and advertising on social media, the Irish Judo Association, the governing body for judo in Ireland have contacted us and are keen to develop the project fur-ther across Belfast and Ulster.

They have agreed to fund license/insurance for up to 30 participants in the first ‘women and girls’ only judo club in Belfast.

They have also agreed to provide essential equipment in the form of judo suits for the participants, contribute to venue hire and adver-tise and promote the club through its website, social media and gov-erning body platform.

This equates to approximately £70 investment per participant.

Page 23: THE JUDO ACADEMY 2020 Judo Diary.pdf · THE JUDO ACADEMY Everybody Active 2020 ‘THIS GIRL CAN THROW’ In Partnership with, Belfast City Council, Irish Judo and The Judo Academy

At present, a specialised programme is being adapted to encourage the girls to gain their ‘yellow’ belt after a 10-week continuation of the EB2020 project.

The club is due to commence in April 2018!

7. Areas of Improvement/Learning In evaluating the project using areas for improvement/learning, the

following points would be considered in engaging in a programme like this again.

- The need to include judo suits as essential equipment to

carry out the project to its full potential. Without the kit, the girls would not have been able to experience the sport to such a degree of safety.

- The need for a larger area of mats and a third fully quali-fied coach to facilitate more participants at the same time.

- A provision for funds to be used for AccessNI as schools and facilities are now requiring checks for each venue.

- Allowance of more time to carry out projects such as this so that the participants can see more of what is on offer

- A faster turnaround of application, acceptance, permission to proceed and remuneration of payments.

Learnings include

- A need to engage schools and staff that will embrace and promote the activities through their school.

- Targeting of schools that are enthusiastic and that have a good degree of participation in PE.

- Inclusion of administration and set up time allowance in the application.

8. Programme Costs met as per application.

9. Additional resources were provided by the Judo Academy. The Judo

Academy provided fully matted area for both schools to facilitate the

project. The Judo Academy also provided judo suit ‘tops and belts’ to

facilitate the learning and experience of the sport.

Page 24: THE JUDO ACADEMY 2020 Judo Diary.pdf · THE JUDO ACADEMY Everybody Active 2020 ‘THIS GIRL CAN THROW’ In Partnership with, Belfast City Council, Irish Judo and The Judo Academy

At least the same amount of hours administration, organising and set up

time was provided by the coaches involved to ensure smooth running of

the project.

The project was fantastic success and special thanks are extended to

Belfast City Council for funding the project, St. Dominic’s and Blessed

Trinity College for engaging and facilitating the venues, the Judo Academy

for provision of equipment, administration and Coaching the project and

finally to Irish Judo for recognising the benefit of the project and supporting

the continuation of judo for ‘women and girls’.

WELL DONE GIRLS!
