    MODULE SUBMISSON FORMSUBMISSION DEADLINE:

    WEDNESDAY 29th May 2013 11.00 1.00pm STUDIO 4

    RATIONALE

I am a predominantly typographic designer with an interest in the application of typography in editorial design

and effective use of type for the creative sectors. I aim to produce design solutions that communicate clearly and

effectively to the given audience without compromising intended message in favour of an interesting aesthetic.

My research interests lie in design for publication and across a range of collateral that has logic or a system in its

production that aids in communication. Professional print finishing is also an important part of the design I find

interesting, with finish playing an important role in my own work.

My own creative interests lie mainly in design for print, focusing on design for music, culture and artistic sectors

due to my creative interests alongside those of the industry. Im interested in the development of identity for

exhibition and independent galleries as well as other creative practices. I have used my FMP as a way of looking

into design for the cultural sector possibly with a more real world application than briefs previously undertaken as

they were often very niche. Developing identities for cultural venues should allow this, as these are projects that

would appear within the public sphere. This should hopefully allow me to apply the skills Ive picked up during theFMP in these areas to possible employment opportunities in these areas.

I have chosen briefs for my Final Major Project that exploit publication, type design and development of identities

for creative individuals, exhibitions and cultural venues. I have also looked into briefs that will allow me to

develop my research and produce more informed solutions, hopefully providing me with portfolio pieces

presenting my interest in design for the creative and cultural sectors. I have factored into these briefs the

continuation of my dissertation topic, reflected in my continued interest in the subject of Swiss Graphic Design.

These brief should allow me to explore both editorial design, applying modernist design principles in order to

improve my visual communication, and the development of solutions to research heavy briefs.

Title and Brief Summary include a short rationale for each brief identifying

why you chose it, what was the focus of the brief and how long you spent on it.

    Design

    Context

My design context revolves around studio inspiration and modern perspectives on the

phrase Form Follows Function. I feel I am influenced mostly by Modernist designers, so

this acts as a collation of 40 studios that have influenced me over the past three years,

who could be considered Modernist. I chose to approach it in this way because I felt it

was most relevant to my practice and was most achievable in the time I left myself to do

it. This brief in terms of research was ongoing however the design, printing and binding of

the document took around a week.

    BRIEF 1 Form and writing

A part collaborative brief focusing in the beginning, on the separate development of

typefaces for creative industry professionals, more specifically graphic designers, whichwere then brought together under the name Form and writing. This brief investigated the

collaborative practice of a type foundry and the promotion of created typefaces both on

screen and in print allowing me to develop my skills in type design and develop a strong

range of printed and web deliverables.

The Brief ran fairly smoothly and the focus was kept from the initial rationale, it gave me a

much better idea of the applications of designed typefaces as well as how they can be

promoted and presented in print and web. For myself it was a really good opportunity to

work with two very different aesthetically, yet like-minded designers with whom I

collaborated very well. The brief started very well as we all got into designing typefaces

very early on however slowed when other commitments took priority. I explored within thebrief a full range of deliverables from the Form and writing stationary to the fonts and their

presentation in both print and web form. The brief ran throughout the module and took

around 18 week to fully complete.

    BRIEF 2 Ben Harris Identity

A branding brief focusing on the development of an identity for a creative professional

working within the discipline of photography. I chose this brief as it allowed me to gain

experience working on a live brief, with a client, whilst allowing me to explore the

possibilities and develop my skills in the creation of bespoke and professional identities.

Ben works across many areas of photography, from portraiture to sports photography, so

the identity needed to promote this broad photographic skill set to potential clients, most

likely professionals within the creative industry in need of professional photography or

sports clubs in need of press photography.

I think the brief fulfilled the reasons for why I originally chose it, and although running for

much longer than Id originally planned, around 19 weeks, I gained useful experience from

its completion. Particularly experience in developing briefs for a client and the time that

can be added to these kinds of briefs from unforeseen circumstances.

    BRIEF 3 DFGA Yearbook

A collaborative investigation into the design of digital promotional material for educational

institutions with a focus on layout design and presentation of information. This brief is

different from what I would normally choose with it being based entirely on screen,

however I think it proved an interesting creative challenge and allowed me to think

differently about design for screen and how various mediums can come together in the

    creation of a single document.

As a second live brief this proved valuable experience in terms of designing for a client.

This brief and client being much different to the other live brief I undertook. Similarly to theBen Harris brief this project has taken longer than expected, although we did factor for it

running all the way through the module. Working with a client as busy as a course leader

often proves difficult because determining times for meeting can often take much longer

than expected, pushing various decisions backwards as youre waiting on confirmation,

however this cannot be helped. Again it is good experience for working with a client.

    BRIEF 4 Sound Bites

A competition brief for ISTD, which I took the shape of a print based investigation intopublication design and the development of identities for exhibition including print

collateral and environmental design. This brief was fairly research driven based on the

nature of the subject with both research into dialect and collation of relevant photographic

material. The original ISTD brief is very much open, so I used this to hone my skills and

produce a project relevant to my own creative interests, using their provided subject

matter of dialects from language recordings as a basis for an exhibition. I thought it would

be very interesting to deal with the idea of dialect and sound in print, with the possibility

    of a sound based exhibition.

With the addition of a photographic element I was able to work as well with image based

documents and feel Ive improved massively in my use of image in layout throughout the

module. I was very ambitious with print processes for this brief towards the beginningspending a lot of time on processes which were unsuccessful and because of this was

not pleased with the brief at the ISTD submission point. Not submitting to ISTD gave me

much more time on the brief and allowed me to create a project Im much happier with.

Its also another lesson learnt in terms of scope of a brief and what is possible in the time

    available.

This brief ran for just over 19 weeks and thus was explored more fully than originally

intended in terms of design direction.

    BRIEF 5 Carriage Works

Carriage works is a theatre in Leeds that very much fits into the cultural sector market that

I would like to work within. Using this to my advantage, as well as the current branding

which could do with a refresh, I used this brief as an opportunity to explore branding for

the creative sectors with both print and web deliverables. My own preference towards

print meant that these elements were explored prior to the development of web

deliverables, and the website was a translation from print. However I am very pleased

with the web deliverables produced and think they fit nicely into the developed identity.

This brief was started much later than expected and as a result I did not explore the brief

as fully as Id have liked to with it taking around 2 week overall. Despite this I developed

an identity that I am pleased with and think I was also able to fulfil the briefs originalrationale. It also presented me the opportunity to produce a brief based on a very quick

    turnaround.

BRIEF 6 LCA Prospectus (Labelled Brief 8)

A collaboration with Niall, Joe and Luke on the Leeds College of Art prospectus for 2014-

2015. This is a live brief that we pitched for in separate groups, and our pitches were

combined. It is a substantial brief consisting of not only the design and layout of a

publication but art direction of photography as well.

The brief is currently ongoing and the design is reliant on the photography to proceed,

which is still in progress. This brief represents a brilliant opportunity for experience on a

brief that we should be able to relate to easily. It will also give me more experience with

client based briefs, which I still feel will prove important moving forward. Another element

to this brief that others dont provide is contact with other professionals such as printers.

This will be great experience in finding out the working of commercial printing, having had

conversations with various printers and paper suppliers I feel I am already more confident

in contacting professionals as I have a more informed perspective.

    Additional Comments

Brief 6 Good News (a collaboration with Niall) was stopped due to taking on the prospectus brief

    along with Joe and Luke.
