What statement do I want to make?It is really important to consider how the space will be used and draw up a list of all the activities that are likely to take place in it. Think about how you use your current kitchen, your likes and dislikes and how you visualise your new kitchen working for you. Will it be a space purely for practical tasks such as cooking, or do you want it to be somewhere that friends and family can gather too? Use these questions as a starting point to ensure that the space works on every level once it’s designed and installed.
What’s on my wish list?As part of the initial design consultation with one of our Designers we use the Sigma 3 wish list to determine some of the details about what will make your new kitchen special for you. It helps us to get to know you better and the better we know you the better we can design your kitchen for your needs.
Why not have a go at filling it out and bring it with you when you visit us in your local Sigma 3 store.
9 Questions To Ask Before Planning A New Kitchen
A kitchen renovation can seem like a daunting task, but we are here to help you every step of the way. We have put together some key questions that you should ask yourself before starting the process.
THE BIGGEST EVER KITCHEN & BEDROOM SALE 16
Where should I compromise?Whilst blue-sky dreaming is key to creating your dream kitchen space, it is also necessary to make sure the items you are dreaming of fit both your space and budget. A luxury brand appliance could well be a step too far. But, do not fear, as we have all the knowledge to help you make these important decisions.
What sort of layout options are there to consider and what are the pros and cons of some of the most popular? There are a variety of layout options, from u-shaped to open-plan, and what works in one space won’t necessarily be right in another. U and L-shaped layouts tend to be popular among customers who have a love of cooking as they enable the chef to get busy with food preparation without anyone getting in the way. This layout also lends itself to the conventional ‘working triangle’, with the sink, oven and fridge all within close proximity of each other – another plus point for keen cooks.
Open-plan layouts are also popular, creating a multi-functional, sociable space and making small rooms appear much bigger. Often an island will be included in this layout to act as a division between the kitchen and dining/living space, perhaps with appliances or the sink integrated into it, bringing the chef centre stage.
What practical points should I consider? Moving plumbing and electrics will result in a larger bill due to the labour involved, so if the existing layout works for you and you are on a budget, it’s worth considering leaving it as it is.
If the kitchen is used as a multi-functional space, or is open-plan, noise can be a problem, making it important to choose appliances that aren’t going to dominate acoustically. If space in the home allows, the ideal solution here is to add a utility room, confining the white appliances to this area where the door can be closed to conceal the noise.
Ventilation is also an important consideration, particularly if the kitchen is to be used as a living space too, as soft furnishings smelling of cooking odours are never pleasant. Again, when choosing an extractor unit, ensure that its decibel level won’t ruin a relaxing ambience.
Do I need Planning Permission?
Whether your require planning permission or not will depend on the size, position and extent of your extension.
If you’re planning a rear extension to make room for your new kitchen, then your project may be covered by Permitted Development Rights on your property, which will mean that you won’t need Planning Permission.
Here are a few of the criteria to meet Permitted Development rights:
• You don’t use more than half the area of the land around the original house and other buildings
• It can’t be higher than the highest part of the roof
• A single storey extension can’t be more than 4 metres high
• A two-storey extension can’t extend more than 3 metres beyond the rear wall of the original house
• Side extensions must be single story, with a maximum height of 4 metres and a width no more than half the width of your house
• The materials used must be similar to those used on your existing house
You can get advice on these matters from your local council planning office.
How do you decide on a colour scheme? It’s important to take time over your colour choices in the kitchen, after all it’s something you’ll be wanting to live with for a long time to come. A blue/grey palette is popular currently and certainly offers a timeless finish. Customers tend to opt for a fairly neutral main colour and then add flashes of vibrant colours to add personality.
When selecting a colour scheme think about how big the space is: larger rooms can usually accommodate a greater use of bolder, brighter colours whereas in smaller spaces too much of this could well be overbearing. However, if the space is open-plan it’s also important to avoid any clashing with furniture and furnishings beyond the kitchen. In this case, it is better to choose a colour or shade that you are happy to live with night and day, as it’s not so easy to shut the door on it.
Which details should I choose? When choosing all of your details from taps to cabinet colour; worktops to dishwasher it is also helpful to pin down the associated elements, too, such as flooring and tiles. This means that you don’t have to make snap decisions that you may later regret.

THE BIGGEST EVER KITCHEN & BEDROOM SALE 20
When Nicola and John Dunlop started their home renovation project they wanted to transform their kitchen into the heart of the home. The brief was to create a room that was family friendly, sociable and above all else a layout where they could keep an eye on their ever-energetic children. Nicola said “storage was also high on my agenda; I’ve discovered you can never have too many cupboards when your family is growing.”
The couple found their inspiration through searching on Instagram and Pinterest and adored the calming hues of grey “with elements of wood, and splashes of colour” Nicola told us. “Our designer helped us decide on the ratios of light and dark grey on the kitchen cabinets and I think it’s spot on”.
One of the easiest decisions for Nicola was the cooker “I was desperately missing the Rangemaster we had at our old house, but our new one has it all, along with a stand-out design”.
To achieve the all-important open plan living the Dunlop’s were searching for, the kitchen island needed be a space where friends and family could gather to socialise and make endless memories. This was achieved through creating a large island with a casual breakfast bar seating and open shelving to showcase Nicola’s impressive range of cookbooks.
Whilst reflecting Nicola added that their beautiful new kitchen was definitely worth the home renovation as she’s now left with a unique design that perfectly aligns with her family’s busy life.

IN THE ZONEDespite being an open and airy space, the room is subtly zoned so the whole family can socialise together.

EMMATHOMAS
Kitchen designer at Sigma 3 Kitchens in Abergavenny, Emma tells us her advice, tips and tricks on designing the
perfect kitchen space.
What is your background?
I studied Interior Design at the University of South Wales and whilst working for Sigma 3 Kitchens gained my NVQ level 3 in customer service.
What is your favourite aspect of designing?
My favourite aspect of kitchen design is how every project is different, and how each customer will have different requirements, it is my job to ensure my customer’s kitchen is tailored to their needs, from looks to practicality to budget – this is the challenge they need to set me!
What is the most rewarding part of being a designer?
It has to be visiting the customer at home when their dream kitchen is all finished. There is nothing like having a lovely cup of coffee and a chat in their new kitchen. Hopefully, they are beaming from ear to ear. It’s amazing to see their reactions and asking
them what’s their favourite part of the kitchen, which is quite often something quite different to what they thought it would be during the design.
What is your favourite kitchen trend at the moment?
I’m quite open with the trends... I love all the deep blue colours that are out there at the moment but I tend to advise people to follow their own tastes and not get too engrossed in trends.
What your advice for customers?
My advice to anyone looking for a new kitchen is simple - just pop in for a chat and let’s sees how we can make your dreams come true. Don’t worry, it might seem daunting but I’m here to help.

THE KITCHEN BRIEFThis home was a complete redesign and the customer wanted something traditional with a modern twist, therefore I knew the Marlborough kitchen would be the perfect match for them. This range is the epitome of simple sophistication and comes with a wealth of exclusive accessories, including mantles and the ever so popular chefs table. The Marlborough range has a silky smooth finish which gives the kitchen the modern touch the customers were after.
FAVOURITE DESIGN FEATURE
I absolutely love the dresser in this kitchen, the addition of Portland Oak inside gives it a beautiful aesthetic value. I wanted it to become a bold statement piece and I definitely think this has been achieved.
YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE
Do your research! It’s not all about the doors, it is what’s behind that counts. There are so many cabinet options available, you don’t have to go for the standard design. Come into the showroom, open doors and drawers, look at the different options and styles that are available. Get yourself a pin board and pull together your ideas. With all that information we can really create something that is truly unique and tailored to your needs.
YOUR FAVOURITE KITCHEN TREND
It’s going to have to be the freestanding, in-frame furniture look. It’s been out there for years, but hasn’t really jumped into every day kitchen design. I’m doing more and more of it now and the attention detail in getting it to look right is so rewarding when it all comes together.
Finally, our dream kitchen!
After several years of planning our dream extension to our home, we eventually decided to go ahead, and had no hesitation in engaging Sigma 3 for our new kitchen. Our original 15 year old kitchen was Sigma 3 and was still going strong and looking good - amazing quality. When we walked in to the Sigma 3 showroom in Swansea, we were immediately drawn to the ‘Marlborough’ and started to discuss our options. Our designer Ryan Thomas was highly professional and approachable from the outset, and having listened carefully to our intentions and requirements came up with a superb design which we then discussed and ‘tweaked’ together, delivering a design that far exceeded our initial expectations. From that point on, the whole process was smooth and stress free with excellent communication throughout the ordering and delivery process, right through to installation day! Simon and Brandon did an excellent job on the installation, and again were communicative, receptive and reassuring, delivering a highly professional result. We now, finally have our dream kitchen, and it has been a fantastic experience. Our heart felt thanks go to Ryan, Simon, Brandon and of course Sigma 3! ... Thank you!

Exceptional Customer Service
The whole process of kitchen planning and decision making was made so easy by a dedicated planner who was our point of contact from day one to completion of project. The showroom in Culverhouse Cross is so well laid out and so comprehensive in the ranges of kitchens that they stock that the process of choosing the kitchen cabinets and all the various accessories including all appliances and worktop was made easy. As the planning continued we became so confident of the professionalism and expertise of this company that long before the work was to begin we decided to take a holiday for the whole period of building the new kitchen - our kitchen planner was given sets of keys and she coordinated the preparation builders and then the kitchen fitter. We arrived home from Spain a month later to a perfect kitchen better than we dared hope. While on holiday we were kept fully informed via email, one telephone call and plenty of emailed photographs. We now have a wow of a kitchen and have even received tuition on the use of the various Neff appliances again from our one point of contact - Beth Zeraschi our kitchen designer has been just fantastic and caring throughout this process - many thanks.

Happy customers
We are extremely pleased with our new kitchen. Sigma were recommended to us by our architect. Ollie (Esher showroom) was very patient with me when I changed my mind on layouts and designs. He was also able to provide suggestions for ways to save money when we wanted to include extras but couldn’t increase our budget. The fitting process was smooth and we are very pleased with the overall result. We get lots of compliments!

The Wishlist
As part of the initial design consultation with one of our Designers we use the Sigma 3 Wish list to determine some of the details about what will make your new kitchen special for you. It helps us to get to know you better and the better we know you the better we can design you kitchen for your needs. Why not have a go at filling it out and bring it with you when you visit us in your local Sigma 3 store.
The MeasureYou can bring your dimensions into us but we always like to promote the importance of a home measure. It allows us to technically measure and make sure we know every detail of your room space, including lighting and size. This is important as it takes the pressure off you and ensures that your dream kitchen will fit perfectly.
The Installation
You will have a dedicated installation manager who is based in your showroom. They will oversee your project from plan to completion. A technical survey allows the installation manager to double check our dimensions are perfect, ready for your dream kitchen. We do offer our kitchen on a supply only basis, but we always like to recommend our fitters.
The Presentation
We can take your measurements and plan your dream kitchen. We ask you to revisit the store as it gives us the opportunity to discuss, amend and develop ideas with you. You can touch and feel samples and make sure your kitchen is in fact, your dream kitchen.
The Sign OffThe final stage of your Sigma 3 kitchen is when the installation manager revisits you to check that the installation has gone smoothly and more importantly, to check that you are happy.
