Is Conversion a friend or foe? Yesterday on Wednesday, February 20, a presenter at the stewardship conference in Wichita reminded us that Lent begins in two weeks. He asked if we are get-ting ready or are we going to wait to the last minute, get our ashes and soon forget about why we got them in the first place. I had to admit to myself, that has hap-pened to me more than I care to admit. So, we should prepare for the conversion of a lifetime for that is what Lent offers us. Are we getting ready for it? Our Lenten season will begin with the sign of ashes on our foreheads reminding us that the time for us to pray for our conversion has arrived once again. The presenter was correct in asking — Are we preparing ourselves to begin our Lent as we have never done so before? Are we eager about the conversion that could await or are we regretting it? Although our conversion isn’t a seasonal thing since when we need a conver-sion, God will make certain we will get it. It is some-thing, however, we need to ask for, trusting that God will hear our request and grant it. The season of Lent is simply a period of time to be reminded to open our hearts and offer our prayers for the conversion we need. A true conversion is a gift from God and there-fore, not a “foe” but a “friend,” figuratively speaking. Conversion can present quite a problem or can cre-ate tension if we are unwilling to change our ways, even if we know they are sinful. We cannot hide our-selves from God when we know we have sinned like Adam and Eve did in the Garden. God asked them why they were hiding and while God knows everything, He wanted the pair to admit their sinfulness to Him setting the stage for the plight of humanity from that point on. They needed a conversion and I trust they got one. I suspect we all need one as well and I trust we will have one as well. Let’s pray that it will happen as many times as we need it. Many of the great saints of our tradition experienced a conversion that set them on the path to holiness. Some of the experiences were very dramatic, like that of St. Paul, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare and St. Augustine to name only a few. A change of heart and a change in our way of living is God’s “nudge” to a conversion just waiting to happen. A conversion begins with an awak-ening and then it evolves into a change in behavior that can result in making a difference not only in our lives but in those around us as well. The Catholic Church in its wisdom, has designated a period of time for us to “awaken” to our need for conversion. They call it Lent and we should see it as an opportunity to improve our lives and our Church.

Memorize and Spread Vital Resources to save a life. It is important to commit two simple resources to memory. The first is the pregnancy help hotline number, 800-712-HELP. The second is the website www.pregnancycenters.org. vocation view—Are you listening to Jesus, the Chosen One? What is he revealing to you? Let His message dwell in yourheart. (Luke 9:28-36)

In today’s Gospel, taken from the 6th chapter of Luke, Jesus of-fers a very challenging, seemingly impossible approach to daily life. “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the per-son who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak do not withhold even your tu-nic.” It makes one want to say, “Seriously, Lord?” And He doesn’t stop there. Jesus adds, “Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.” It seems so unfair! That is, unless we look at this way of life from a stewardship point of view. Then, not only does it seem doable (though challenging), it actually makes perfect sense. A steward understands clearly that all he has and all that he is — his very life — is a gift from God given to him from an unfathomable abun-

dance of love. This changes everything! This means “my” cloak, “my” tunic, “my” money and “my” time — all of it ultimately belongs to God. He has entrusted these things to each of us in love to use for His purposes and His glory. Does this mean we are to be passive “doormats” to anyone who wants to take advantage of us? Certainly not. Jesus explains this in the next verse of this passage when He says, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” There is nothing wrong with loving oneself since God loves us and has made us in His own image and likeness. Jesus is simply asking that we also approach others, and the sharing of our gifts, with this same attitude. He is giving us a definition here of real love, a steward’s love!
