vocation view—Will you choose to follow Je-sus wherever he goes? To say “yes” without hesitation requires great trust. The reign of God needs servants to trust. (Luke 9:51-62)

Today’s readings take us back to the basics, inviting us to reflect honestly on our deepest priorities in life. In today’s Gospel, from Luke, Christ refers to the struggle to put Him above all else as He encounters two “would-be” disciples on His way to Jerusalem. “‘Follow me,’” Jesus says to the first man. “But he replied, ‘Lord let me go first and bury my father.’ The other said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my fam-ily at home.” These two want to follow Christ, but only on their own terms, and only after taking care of some other, more pressing matters (at least in their own minds). To this, Christ says thanks, but no thanks! Following Him requires an unqualified “yes” not a “yes, but…” We are called to put Christ and His kingdom ahead of our own plans if we truly wish to be His disciples and to find vic-tory in the battle of selfishness. Living stewardship as a way of life can go a long way in arming us for victory. A stewardship way of life pro-vides us with a custom-made “training plan” — the com-mitment to a specific offering of our time, talent and trea-sure to the Kingdom of God. It is a plan discerned through prayer, and by looking at the realities of our unique cir-cumstances, strengths and limitations. The daily disci-

Sunday Readings and Backgrounds13th Sunday of Ordinary Time • Week of June 30Reading I : 1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21You shall anoint Elisha.• In the first reading, Elijah announces God’s call to

Elisha by throwing his mantle over him.• This signified the call to prophetic office.• Elisha closed the door to his former way of life

by killing the draft animals with which he had been plowing, using the plow for firewood, and preparing a magnificent feast for the people.

Reading II : Galatians 5:1, 13-18My brothers and sisters, you are called to freedom.• In his Letter to the Galatians, Paul emphasizes a call

to freedom.• The disciples were called to abandon all the things

that enslaved them and to subject themselves to the Spirit of love.

• That Spirit brings joy and peace, kindness and generosity.

Gospel : Luke 9:51-62I will follow you wherever you will go.• The Gospel reading shows the price Jesus paid to

follow his call.• Because he was on his way to Jewish Jerusalem,

the Samaritans would not welcome him. Jesus was caught between two hostile forces.

• One group rejected him because he was going to Jerusalem. There, the other group would kill him.

pline of committing to the plan strengthens us and helps us gradually move away from the “yes, but” attitude and towards an unqualified “yes!” to Christ and His will. Do not be afraid to give the best of yourself and your gifts to Christ. He deserves nothing less. And this way of life, while chal-lenging, will be characterized by a joy and peace that only comes from living for Him.
