“There is no space where God is not; space does not exist apart from Him. He is in heaven, in hell, beyond the seas; dwelling in all things and enveloping all. Thus He embraces, and is embraced by, the universe, confined to no part of it but pervading all.”

St. Hilary of Poitiers (315-367), Feast Day January 13

The “Wow” Factor Traveling over the Christmas holiday of 2016-2017 will be a topic of conversation for at least a number of years as we recall the storms that stranded us, kept us inside and for some, unfortunately, cut off electric-ity and heat. I can’t imagine not being able to light the Christmas tree but there are more serious issues than that. As the old saying goes, “we never appreci-ate what we’ve got until we haven’t got it anymore.” Sometimes it takes difficult circumstances to come to an awareness of the blessings we do have and appreci-ate them for what they are. I once enjoyed a career in marketing and advertising at 3M. We often used what we called the wow factor in our presentations; hoping that would leave those who viewed them with an expression of “wow!” on their lips. The expression is defined as a way to express wonder, amazement or great pleasure. It was an adver-tising technique that proved to be effective in what we designed and the message we intended to communi-cate. Today, it is a common term, understood and used by many. I mean no disrespect when I say, the Feast of the Epiphany is one of the “wow” events of the Christ-mas season. It is definitely one more feast day for the Christian world to express wonder, amazement or great pleasure, at the birth of our Messiah. Just as it was for those who first saw and believed the child ly-ing in a manager would assure us of our salvation, we celebrate our own epiphany which encourages us to appreciate the blessings we have in our Catholic Faith. As we move our three kings, astrologers or wise men into position to recall their discovery, we examine our own lives to recall how our faith and relationship with Christ has changed us, and continues to inspire us with the revelation of His truth. Our spiritual lives are de-pendent upon us embracing Christ, not just as a child, but a true savior. The Feast of the Epiphany, which we celebrate very near the end of the Christmas season this year, will continue to unfold for us the mystery of God’s love throughout the entire year. Let us eagerly await each and every way it is revealed to us, not by a star, but by the way we live our Faith, in our parish, homes and community. Each moment we recognize God’s love for us, the wow factor comes into play. Do not cease to be amazed with great joy and wonder at the mystery and blessing of God’s plan for each of us. “WOW!” Fr. Dave

Adult Formation/Retreat held at St. Anthony Parish CenterCONSOLING THE HEART OF JESUS 10-WEEK GROUP RETREAT In these 10 fast-paced and lively sessions, Fr. Gaitley connects people and events in history to a unifying vision of the splendor of God’s merciful love. From the epic story of Poland’s national suffering, to the events of Fatima, the revelations of St. Faustina, the heroic efforts of St. Maximilian Kolbe, and the life of St. John Paul II, the panorama of Divine mercy is fully revealed as a transformative reality. Please call parish center 254-4588 to pre-register by Jan. 11 so books can be ordered for you. Cost is $20 and begins Jan. 18 through March 29. This will be held at St. Anthony Parish Center Wednesday evenings, 7 p.m.

Sunday Readings and BackgroundsEpiphany of the LordWeek of January 8, 2017Reading I : Isaiah 60:1-6Your light has come!• The reading from Isaiah refers to a time of great hope in

ancient Israel.• Jerusalem, which had been destroyed by the Babylo-

nians, was about to be rebuilt.• In today’s passage, Isaiah associates light with the glory

of God’s presence.

Reading II : Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6We all share the same promise!• In the second reading, we glimpse a beginning of God’s

Kingdom in time.• Paul stresses that God’s promise to Israel is fulfilled in

Jesus.• All people, both Gentiles and Jews share in salvation in

Christ.

Gospel : Matthew 2:1-12They opened their coffers and presented him with gifts.• The Gospel reading today links Jesus to God’s promise

to Israel.• The royal title given by the Magi to Jesus points to his

role as Messiah.• In ancient times, the birth of a great person was often

associated with astrological events.

Vocation View— Look about you! Can you see the glory of God? Open your heart to receive the gifts God is of-fering you. (Isaiah 60:1-6)

A THANK YOU to our stewards from the Dept. Of Veteran Affairs “On behalf of the Fargo VA Health Care System patients and staff, I would like to extend our gratitude for the donation of Christmas cards for Veterans. The time and effort invested in this project reflects your ap-preciation for our Veterans and for the freedom they provided to all of us while in service to our county. A simple thank you seems far too small a gesture for the kindness you have shown our Veterans. We appreciate you generosity more than words can say. Thank you for showing your support and care for our nation’s heroes!”
