INSPIRATION

This month I have struggled to find a subject for those dear readers who often say, “I Love your bits in the magazine”. Well, thank you, and I hope this latest effort might entertain, or even inspire you.

The recent exhibition in Pilning Church of the ‘knitted bible’ was inspired. It inspired the folk in a Hartlepool church to spend ages knitting hundreds of figures, and flocks of sheep! I was in church when the final class of children from Pilning School came to see the exhibits. They roamed around gazing at the many displays, and at the end the teacher called them into line.

Now, here is ‘inspiration’. “Who can tell me how long it took to knit all these figures?” Every hand shot up. The inspiration in children’s eyes is a wonderful thing and teachers must see it every day. “A year” said one boy, “Two” said another. Eyes sparkled, hands waved, “3”. The more inspired had suspected they might as well wait for the higher numbers and gain recognition for being right! “10” “Yes, 10 years” said teacher, and added tellingly “None of you were born when they started” Gasps of disbelief!

Later during the weekend, I was having a quiet cream tea. A lady I know well was sat near me. “Do you still write the poems? I read them now to my great grandchildren and they know them off by heart” It’s 30 years since “The Nellyphant” rolled off my

Roy

computer (word processor!) I was very taken aback by what she said. That inspired a quick look through dusty papers where I found the unpublished story, illustrated by son Martin, of how I arrived at “Nellyphant”. Janet now has the first ever copy, with my love.

Years ago, when I was still organist, I was inspired by a child to write a poem. It was read by our late villager, Trevor Fry, to an expert. He said, “Oh that’s lovely, what alliteration”. Maybe it had it – I had to look it up to see what it meant!! Here it is, again, for your inspiration.

BOY BESIDE THE ORGAN STOOLOh, brown eyed boy of seven Christmas mornsBeside the glowing brown of polished woodAmid the candle brackets brazen gleamAgainst the bank of tender blossoms stood.

How bright the wonder of this wide eyed child,At nearness of the diapasons roar. The magic light within his heart shines outAnd from his gaping mouth no sound comes forth.

My fingers fly across the milky keysInspired by his youthful wondermentBetween us flows a spark that can be feltyet cannot be in words made evident.

This music that I make a weekly chore,And often seems mundane and uninspiredHas suddenly become the greatest thingThat ever from my little skill transpired.

Oh, brown eyed boy beside the organ stoolWhose magic eyes around my heart have curledOne moment in my ordinary lifeI was the greatest man in all the world.

As you will undoubtedly have heard Dad passed away on July 10th. Reading this editorial, it is obvious that some of his lifelong loves are present; as was his passion to inspire others. It may surprise you to learn I wasn’t the boy in the poem, that person is unknown. However, we did witness his enthusiasm for so many things whether it was writing prose or poetry, playing the organ and singing, art in various forms, watercolours, canal-ware, Panto and Gang Show producer and

July the 10th is a special day for me as it was my Dad's birthday. Now, sadly, it will also be known as the day the community lost a true father-figure: Roy Edwardes. He finally succumbed after a long, courageous battle against illness in the early hours of that day. In many ways, that battle summed up his approach to life: he never once moaned, just "got on with it" - always with a merry quip or self-deprecating remark.

I've known Roy ever since I came to Pilning - and St Peter's church - in 1989. He was always busy, whether in the choir, organising the marvellous WASP scooters or helping the Carnival progress.

It's quite apt that someone whose life revolved around St Peter's should be such a superb advert for Christianity. Total atheists could not help but be impressed by his total selflessness and obvious goodness. He thought up the idea of "Fly the flag", which gave families a superb way of connecting. More typically, he used a photo of us with the flag-pole after repairs to it as a caption competition for In View.

Ah yes: In View! He spent hours and hours (with others) hand-printing the magazine for years in Dickensian conditions. His Editorials were an art form: they were whimsical yet relevant; pithy yet inoffensive. I used to call it the "Poppy bingo" as I would guess how many times that name would crop up. It was normally in connection with some pretty young shop assistant that had caught his eye! Young harpists "up above" had better watch out!

The simplest way to sum him up is that as a person, as the In View editor, he made people's lives better. A true role model and a great loss to not only his family but for the whole community. We miss you already, you very special man.

Remembering Roy

I always had much more than a professional association with Roy. We were friends.

Our relationship started when I volunteered to produce the artwork for the In View magazine, well, mum actually emailed Roy telling him I could do a better job! He was thrilled with what I had done and thought I made the magazine look more professional.

When Mum, Colin and me made the decision to form a new print and design business based in Severn Beach (Motion Printing), Roy supported us and was our very first customer. He asked us to print Many Aspects of Love, a booklet of poems he’s written himself followed by The Nellyphant.

Roys recommendation helped secure the printing of the In View back in 2014,

which had previously been printed by volunteers. Roy has been an advocate of ours ever since and his endorsement helped us secure the design and printing of the Thornbury Magazine and other local printing projects.

Over the years Roy and Pat have become friends of ours, we exchange Christmas presents, were invited to attend Roy’s 80th and was visited when our newest member was born last year.

Roy will be sadly missed.

So much of our news is about the very strong or the very weak. We hear about the struggles for power within our own government and speculation about meetings between major world leaders. Those appear in the headlines alongside the current pattern of migration into southern Europe by those hoping to find a better life.

Actions and decisions made by the powerful affect the lives of millions, yet the weak stay anonymous. Amidst all this, we are all human beings with strengths and weaknesses. Our society tends to value those with power, money, health or beauty and there is pressure on those without these and other gifts.

It is possible, however, to challenge these values. Mahatma Gandhi famously said, ‘The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members’. That was the vision of the NHS, whose 70th

Anniversary we are proudly celebrating this year. But that vision for supporting the most vulnerable is also under pressure. What

things do we need to promote in order to enable a society in which all are treated with dignity?

The message of Paul, a significant writer in the Bible, was more radical than simply looking after the weak: he insisted that we can find strength through weakness. The global L’Arche community used this insight to allow people with and without learning disabilities to live together and flourish. Its founder, Jean Vanier, talks about losing power and emphasises the importance of building relationships. By acknowledging that we are all valued parts of the human family, no longer pretending to be better or stronger than others, then there’s a liberation to be ourselves.

We can then be truly open to each other, receive each other’s gifts, and celebrate with joy the power of community.

With my best wishesRev Patrick StonehewerMethodist Minister

Traditionally August is holiday season, when many people take their annual holiday particularly as it coincides with the long school holiday. Where though do holidays originate? The word “holiday” is derived from “Holy Day”, when religious festivals or Saint’s days were observed. In the middle ages these could mean time off work or, at the very least, an excuse for a party. There were more of them than you think as currently the Church of England celebrate 38 feasts, holy days and festivals. Even the concept of going away on holiday existed in the form of pilgrimages which, although meant to be a demonstration of piety, were also an excuse to travel.

During the 18th century, it was only the very wealthy who could afford to travel long distances. In the 19th century however with the Industrial Revolution in full swing and the advent of steam-powered ships and trains travel was revolutionised and became easier, safer and cheaper. People moved to towns and cities with working hours decided by managers, not by seasonal requirements and they got structured time off. In the North of England and the Midlands particularly, each town would nominate a week during which all the mills and factories would close for maintenance and the workers would have a week’s holiday, known as Wakes week. The belief that sea air was good for your health and the new railways led to the creation of the British seaside holiday and whole resorts were built upon this new tourism. While now many people choose to go abroad for their beach holiday, the British seaside resorts are still popular especially for day trips.

Day trips are often associated with bank holidays, and these too were introduced in the 19th century by Sir John Lubbock,

an advocate for shorter working hours and more holidays for the working classes, who was responsible for the Bank Holiday Act of 1871. This created four bank holidays: Easter Monday, Whit Monday, the first Monday in August and Boxing Day. While Christmas Day and Good Friday are often referred to as Bank Holidays, they are common law holidays since time immemorial. From 1965, the August bank holiday was changed to the Monday after the last Saturday in August and so in some years it fell in September. In 1971, the Banking and Financial Dealings Act was passed which replaced Whit Monday with the late Spring Bank Holiday, fixing it as the last Monday in May and fixing the late August Bank Holiday as the last Monday in August. New Year’s Day and the first Monday in May were not added until 1974 and 1978 respectively. Under the Act, royal proclamation can be used to vary the date of a bank holiday or to add one-off bank holidays for events such as Royal Weddings or Jubilee celebrations.

So, whether you choose to spend your time off going abroad, travelling to one of our own beaches or simply relaxing at home, have a great holiday!

And it’s still not too late for anyone to help us in some way this year. To find out more about our supporters and the Flower Show itself, including how to enter, please pick up a free programme from Down’s Bakery, Dave England’s, Pilning Post Office, Pilning Garage, or the Dinky Store. But for those using social media, you can also get the information you need and images from previous years from the Pilning Flower Show Facebook page.

Thank you for your continued support for the show.

SEVERN BEACH & DISTRICT OVER 50’S CLUB

At the time of writing the Village Festival is still two weeks away, but I hope you all turned up and had a great time. We’re doing our usual stint on kitchen duties and, hopefully, will make another handsome profit. Isn’t it great living in a village community that works together for the benefit of all.Another five-week month and so much to do and so little time to fit it all in. Week one is our Committee meeting and prize Bingo, on the 9th we have our trip to McArthur Glen outlet then onto beautiful Porthcawl. On the 16th we have live entertainment from Spectrum, on the 23rd a Raffle with wine and cheese (our wine intake seems to rise in the Summer months), and on the 30th Play your Cards Right, with the chance, should you win, of the mystery big prize!

Below are details of our two remaining coach trips. For details and to book please contact Mrs Chris Castle on 01454 631283.

For all enquires about the club, membership etc please contact Audrey or me, details below.

TV Providers Discount Fraud

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has noticed an increase in reports where fraudsters are offering a discount on TV service provider subscriptions. Fraudsters are cold-calling victims, purporting to be from a Television (TV) provider offering a discount on their monthly subscription. Victims have been told: their subscription needs to be renewed; that part or all, of the TV equipment has expired and they are due an upgrade on the equipment/subscription. In order to falsely process the discount, the fraudster asks victims to confirm or provide their bank account details or other documents, such as scanned copies of passports. The fraudsters use the following telephone Nos: “08447111444”, “02035190197” and “08001514141”. The voices sound feminine and have an Asian accent.

Later victims make enquiries and then find that their TV service provider didn’t call them and that the fraudsters have made transactions using the victim’s bank account details.

What you need to do• Don’t assume a phone call or email is authentic: Just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name and address or even your mother’s maiden name), it doesn’t mean they are genuine.• Don’t be rushed or pressured into making a decision: a genuine company won’t force you to make a financial decisions on the spot. Always be wary if you’re pressured to purchase a product or service quickly, and don’t hesitate to question uninvited approaches in case it’s a scam. • Stay in control: Have the confidence to refuse unusual requests for personal or financial information. Always contact the company yourself using a known email or phone number, such as the one written on a bank statement or bill.

Visit Take Five (takefive-stopfraud.org.uk/advice/) and Cyber Aware (cyberaware.gov.uk) for more information about how to protect yourself online.

NEWS FROM ST PETER’S PRIMARY SCHOOL

On Saturday 9th June, a squad of nine children from Class 1 took part in the Bradley Stoke Football Festival on a glorious and extremely hot afternoon. They played six games and won all six, scoring 23 goals and conceding only three! It really was a team effort, with everyone playing their part and working hard for the team. They were rewarded with a fantastic trophy, a medal each and goody bag packed full of exciting bits & bobs! A huge thank you to the Class 1 staff team and all the parents/family members who came along to get behind the team, we really do appreciate it!

YOUTH SPEAKS COMPETITIONClass 6 recently took part in the annual ‘Youth Speaks’ competition run by the Rotary Club. The competition aims to provide children with an opportunity to gain confidence in making speeches and to provide them with a valuable skill for the future. All the children in Class 6 took part in the first two rounds in which two children were selected to go through to the Grand Final, which was held on Monday 2nd July at Olveston Hall.

Mabel Young and Hattie Davies both spoke beautifully to a crowded hall about topics they are passionate about and were up against stiff competition. The girls wowed the judges and the audience. Mabel finished in 3rd place and Hattie in 2nd place. Staff and their parents were incredibly proud of the girl’s performance.

DOGSMARTLovely Trekka has been in school with Helen Peake from the Dogs Trust sharing dog safety tips. KS2 children enjoyed some informative workshops and the whole school enjoyed a ‘Dog Smart’ assembly.

QUADKIDSOn Thursday 14th June, a squad of 10 children from Class 5 & Class 6 travelled to Yate to take part in the South Gloucestershire Quadkids Athletics event. They competed in four different activities: vortex throw, standing long jump, 75m sprint and 600m run. They not only competed against the other schools brilliantly, showcasing a range of athletic skills, but they also showed great respect towards their fellow competitors and supported each other throughout the afternoon…especially during the gruelling 600m run! Overall they finished 5th out 10 schools and did us all proud! A huge thank you as well to Mrs Kerton & Mrs Povey for helping get the squad to and from Yate and cheering the squad on during the event!

Looking ahead in September: New Reception children start school on 4th Sept. Year 6 Bikeability , Year 3 swimming, Year 6 Life Skills trip.

It all began in 2016, when a friend and I visited the Parish Church in Wotton under Edge to buy lunch. We stumbled on their Festival in Flowers and Wool. We discovered the Knitted Bible. I was fascinated by it. All the best loved stories from the Bible re created in the form of little knitted people, animals and even food. Imagine knitting a chalice full of red wine!

The exhibition of 34 scenes started its life in 2008 at St George’s Church, Hartlepool. It now travels round Britain, and I was keen for it to come to Pilning.

In June 2018 it was being lent to a Church in Taunton. We booked the next slot.

I chose Neil, more for his large car than his good looks, to help collect the exhibition from Taunton. Then Adam Biddlestone from the Methodist Circuit Office became a Man with a Van and emptied our Church of its chairs. He took them to Easter Compton

Methodist Church who kindly stored them for us, and lent us their trestle tables. The Scout Group also lent us tables. Sorry Adam, it was such a hot day!

St Peter’s changed from a Church to an exhibition site. Gazebos were erected for refreshments, clotted cream was purchased for teas , Pat made knitted flower arrangements, and Adam’s team set up games and quizzes.

We opened on 29 June for 4 glorious days. The children from St Peter’s school walked down to us in groups to view the scenes and recognise the stories. When it came to the parable of the Lost Sheep they were determined to confirm how many sheep were in the wilderness. The resulting totals differed wildly. The little lambs had tiny legs and the children helped to make them stand up. A Sisyphean task.

Then came the public. Dozens of them, some from quite a distance. They too enjoyed recognising the scenes and reading the brief stories on the hand held paddles at each display . So many exclaimed at the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. When, after schooldays, have any of us revisited this story? It’s one of the Old Testament’s great tales that lie forgotten.

WHEN THE KNITTED BIBLE CAME TO PILNING Thanks to all who helped to advertise, set up, steward, and cater during this event. Wonderful cakes arrived and knitted animals for us to sell.

I pass a very big thank you to Jeanette who spent days with me setting it all up and packing it all away. I hope she enjoyed it as much as I did. It was a privilege to be involved with this inspiring exhibition from Hartlepool. It was such a triumph of enthusiasm and talent, and yet so gentle and cute.

We raised over £450, and will be donating a third to St George’s Church in Hartlepool.

What a month we had in June - we saw a group of our fantastic martial artists grade for their next level. Huge congratulations to everyone who graded:

Achieving Green - 6th GupAdam GriffinHarvey HolmesIsabel HardmanTalitha Ryall Achieving Green Tag – 5th GupThomas Chapman I’m extremely proud of all students who continue to persevere and go up through the ranks; it’s a daunting experience but the Beachers always pull it out of the bag each time and smash it! Each time you impress me more and more, and you are a credit to yourselves. Never underestimate your skills – and have confidence in your ability. Demos! We were thrilled to be a part of the Bradley Stoke Festival and Armed Forces

Day in June. The DTSD Demo team performed with help from local clubs. It was a great chance to show off the fantastic skills that the DTSD team have and showcase our syllabus and self-defence techniques (with some real-life action!). Well done to Ashlee Williams, who is part of the Demo Squad, and Thomas Chapman who both broke wooden boards on the day at Bradley Stoke Festival – those boards are not easy! What is next? The next step for us is August – where we are travelling to the Queen Elizabeth Park in London (where the Olympics were held for the gymnastics) to compete in the Tang Soo Do World Championships. This is bigger and more advanced than our International Opens that are held annually in Cardiff – these are the real deal! We’re excited and nervous to have been invited to compete, and it’s extremely fantastic for Severn Beach who are entering three students! We’re really nervous, but excited, as this is a fantastic opportunity to compete and represent not just DTSD and Severn Beach, but England too! Let’s hope we bring it home! Of course, we’re always open to new students, having welcomed a few new starters in the last few weeks. Prior experience is not necessary, and we have no upper age limit! We’ve seen some fantastic parents start up in DTSD, and it’s a great thing to do as a family. Tang Soo!
