READINGS FOR

29 March 2020 Fifth Sunday of Lent

1st Reading: Ezekiel XXXVII: 12-14

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 130

2nd Reading: Romans VIII: 8-11

Gospel: Saint John XI: 1-45

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION “Brothers and sisters: You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord” (See Ephesians 5:8 and John 9:1-41). The Gospel story we read today explains and deepens in our minds and hearts the meaning of the opening words of the 5th chapter of Ephesians quoted above. We are all this blind

man that Jesus restores to sight. He was once in darkness, but after Jesus restored his eyesight he was in the light. It is interesting to consider how his opinion of Jesus keeps growing throughout the account. First he refers to Jesus as “the man called Jesus”; later on, he says, “He is a prophet.” Next he calls Jesus “Lord” and finally he worships Him. He is thrown out of the synagogue, but it doesn’t matter, for he has entered into a new life, a life of light. We too should be growing in our appreciation of Who Jesus is and what He has done for us. During this Lent let us remember what this ultimately means - we will walk more and more in the light, doing what is good, what is pleasing to Him, the Light of the world.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR

THIS TOO SHALL PASS!

An official statement from the Diocese of Rockville Centre reads as follows (the entire statement may be

read at www.drvc.org):

“As of March 15, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control announced that it is recommended

that all events involving 50 people or more be suspended or postponed. In an effort to

promote health and safety of all people, the Diocese of Rockville Centre announces the

following measures:

Beginning Monday, March 16, 2020 at 3:00 P.M., all Masses (weekday and weekend),

meetings, and non-essential activities in our parishes are suspended or postponed through

Tuesday, April 2020. This will include all Holy Week and Easter Liturgies.”

Many of us are not happy with this decision. Many of us

believe that we answer (and know that we will answer)

to a Higher Authority than the “Centers of Disease

Control”, a Mayor, a Governor, a President, a Priest, a

Bishop, a Pope … yes, a Higher Authority (we must admit)

than even ourselves. The official statement of the

Diocese of Rockville Centre, does not refute those

beliefs. If our Bishop, uses the Keys of the Kingdom to

loosen or to bind, the Keys given to him by no mere

person but by Jesus Christ (the Higher Authority Himself)

when He handed them to Saint Peter (cf. Saint John XX:22-23) and all of his successors, right down to Pope

Francis and his Bishops in Communion with the Church in Rome, it is incumbent upon all of us, to accept

that decision; and through that humble and obedient act of free will: come to understand it.

I personally, am not happy with the decision, but nevertheless, I

must accept that decision: which is harder for me to do than it is

for me to abstain from eating meat on Fridays, fasting on Ash

Wednesday and Good Friday, and/or any other Lenten practice I

might choose.

When I was ordained on 13 June 1998, I promised obedience to

Bishop John R. McGann and all of his successors, promising not

that “my will be done”, but rather “thy will be done”; even when

it doesn’t make sense to me. I am asking you, the people of Our

Holy Redeemer in Freeport, entrusted to my Pastoral Care, to find

it within yourselves to do the same; to “go (as Jesus said to do on

Ash Wednesday) into your inner room, close the door, and pray to

your Father in secret. And your Father Who sees in secret will

repay you” (Saint Matthew VI:6). While we know that the inner

room of which Christ speaks is that of our hearts, it is easiest to

gain access to that sacred space when we detach ourselves from people, places, and things by entering into

22 MARCH 2020

a place alone. This is what Christ did, and this is what we must do if we want to share in His victory over

sin, death, and yes: even the coronavirus.

The weakness of human flesh can only be strengthened by the

strength of the Holy Spirit. That strength is developed in the

very way it was developed in the humanity of Christ: through

prayer and fasting. For forty days Jesus detached from

everything that was dear to Him: His family, His friends, His

daily activities, His favourite foods, even Sabbath Day-time in

the Synagogue and the Temple. He went into the desert, and

with no more (because He needed no more) than the Spirit

with Whom the Father anointed Him, defeated every

temptation (even the temptation to “doubt” that He was the

Son of God) with prayer and fasting. He went into that desert,

not because He wanted to do it, but because it was (as Sacred

Scriptures says) thrust upon Him.

And so it is my brothers and sisters that we must – because it

has been thrust upon us from the Higher Authority – detach (without fear of sin or abandonment) from

being at Holy Mass in our absolutely beautiful church at 37 South Ocean Avenue in Freeport. It is only by

going into our inner room, into our desert, that we will find the Way to accept it and even understand it.

Our “at home” journey into the desert on Sunday, does not dispense anyone of us from the Commanded

obligation from God to “keep Holy the Sabbath Day”. Christ taught us in the desert that “Man does not live

by bread alone but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God”. And so, please attend Holy

Mass by tuning into Catholic Faith Network (Optimum Channel 29/137, Verizon FIOS TV channel 296, and

Spectrum channel 162/471 and LIVE STREAM 24/7 at CFNtv.org.); make a Spiritual Communion; and be

nourished by that Word! Be sure however, to remain with Christ one hour. Allow your apartment, your

house, your room, your

dwelling place … to become

your own desert. This is not

simply to avoid catching the

“coronavirus” or any virus for

that matter, but rather, this

directive is a unique

opportunity for us to share in

the Passion, Death and

Resurrection of Christ, and

united through Him, with

Him, and in Him, to emerge

from our desert victorious

over sin, death, and … the

coronavirus so: “Don’t let

your hearts be troubled. You

have faith in God; have faith

also in Me” (Saint John XIV:1).

“I am with you always, even until the end of the age” (Saint Matthew XXVIII:20).

,

Pray for an increase in Vocations to the Sacred Priesthood. Jesus says in Saint Matthew IX:38 “To beg the Master of the harvest to send labourers into the vineyard.” If we want more Priests, we all need to ask.

Loving Father, in Baptism You call us to be a people of hope. Raise up, we pray, especially for our diocese

of Rockville Centre, many good and holy Priests. Grant men throughout our diocese the courage and vision

needed to shepherd and serve Your people as Priests. Open up, in Your love, the hearts of all Your children

that they may discern Your holy will and know Your call in their lives. Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

NOW A WORD ABOUT PRAYER Prayer is the offering in spirit that has done away with the sacrifices of old. What good do I receive from

the multiplicity of your sacrifices? asks God. I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams, and I do not want the fat of lambs and the blood of bulls and goats. Who has asked for these from your hands?

What God has asked for we learn from the Gospel. The hour will come, he says, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. God is a spirit, and so he looks for worshipers who are like himself.

We are true worshipers and true priests. We pray in spirit, and so offer in spirit the sacrifice of prayer. Prayer is an offering that belongs to God and is acceptable to him: it is the offering he has asked for, the offering he planned as his own.

We must dedicate this offering with our whole heart, we must fatten it on faith, tend it by truth, keep it unblemished through innocence and clean through chastity, and crown it with love. We must escort it to the altar of God in a procession of good works to the sound of psalms and hymns. Then it will gain for us all that we ask of God.

Since God asks for prayer offered in spirit and in truth, how can he deny anything to this kind of prayer? How great is the evidence of its power, as we read and hear and believe.

Of old, prayer was able to rescue from fire and beasts and hunger, even before it received its perfection from Christ. How much greater then is the power of Christian prayer. No longer does prayer bring an angel of comfort to the heart of a fiery furnace, or close up the mouths of lions, or transport to the hungry food from the fields. No longer does it remove all sense of

pain by the grace it wins for others. But it gives the armor of patience to those who suffer, who feel pain, who are distressed. It strengthens the power of grace, so that faith may know what is gaining from the Lord, and understand what it is suffering for the name of God.

In the past prayer was able to bring down punishment, rout armies, withhold the blessing of rain. Now, however, the prayer of the just turns aside the whole anger of God, keeps vigil for its enemies, pleads for persecutors. Is it any wonder that it can call down water from heaven when it could obtain fire from heaven as well? Prayer is the one thing that can conquer God. But Christ has willed that it should work no evil, and has given it all power over good.

Its only art is to call back the souls of the dead from the very journey into death, to give strength to the weak, to heal the sick, to exorcise the possessed, to open prison cells, to free the innocent from their chains. Prayer cleanses from sin, drives away temptations, stamps out persecutions, comforts the fainthearted, gives new strength to the courageous, brings travelers safely home, calms the waves, confounds robbers, feeds the poor, overrules the rich, lifts up the fallen, supports those who are falling, sustains those who stand firm.

All the angels pray. Every creature prays. Cattle and wild beasts pray and bend the knee. As they come from their barns and caves they look out to heaven and call out, lifting up their spirit in their own fashion. The birds too rise and lift themselves up to heaven: they open out their wings, instead of hands, in the form of a cross, and give voice to what seems to be a prayer.

What more need be said on the duty of prayer? Even the Lord himself prayed. To him be honor and power for ever and ever. Amen.

This excerpt is from Tertullian’s second century treatise On Prayer. It is used in the Roman Catholic Office of Readings for Thursday of the 3rd week in Lent. The accompanying biblical reading is Exodus 34:10-28.

FAITH AND EDUCATION

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL

County Executive Laura Curran has ordered all Nassau County Public and Non-Public K-12 Schools closed for the next two weeks. Following this order, The De La Salle School will be closed until Friday, 27 March, and reopening on Monday, 30 March

At The De La Salle School we traditionally conclude Lent with the praying of the Stations of the Cross during Holy Week. Again, this year our eighth graders will lead us in this reflection on the

passion and death of Jesus. We offer our students’ reenactment of aspects of Jesus’s way of the cross to the parishioners of Our Holy Redeemer and to all in the larger community as an invitation to reflect on the greatness of God’s love for each of us.

Please consider joining us in prayer in the gymnasium of The De La Salle School for about 45 minutes starting at either 7:00 PM on Tuesday, 7 April or at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, 8 April. We hope that you will have the opportunity to join us on this special journey of our faith.

Applicants for membership in our incoming class of fifth graders are finding their way to our door! Any parent who is interested in enrolling his/her son in our 5th grade class for September is encouraged to act soon while seats are still open. Applications during this time of school closures should be mailed to the school or dropped off at the Rectory.

nosotros mismos. La declaración oficial de la Diócesis de

Rockville Centre no refuta esas creencias.

completamente a Ti.

Directions: Find the words below from today’s Scripture reading in the puzzle. Words can go horizontally, vertically, and diagonally in all directions (as shown).

As Jesus passed by He saw a man blind from birth. His

disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be

made visible through him. We have to do the works of the One Who sent Me while it

is day. Night is coming when no one can work. While I am

in the world, I am the Light of the World.” When He had said this, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and

smeared the clay on his eyes, and said to him, “Go wash in the Pool of Siloam” (which means Sent).

So he went and washed, and came back able to see.
