Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 19, 2020

COMING EVENTS

With a new year come new initiatives that I want to bring to your attention as graces and blessings from the Lord. YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST. Cardinal Sean O'Malley has designated a period beginning in Ho-ly Week, 2020 through to Corpus Christ Sunday, 2021, to be known as the Year of the Eucharist. I will be writing to you much more about this in the coming months. The Cardinal wrote: "It is my hope and prayer that through this spiritual initia-tive we can invite and encourage our brothers and sisters to find the consolation of the Lord through participation in the celebration of the Eucharist and in times of prayer before the Blessed Sacra-ment." YEAR OF RECONSTRUCTION. As you have seen if you have been to Saint John over the past month, work has begun in our renovation / restora-tion project. Some painting of the sanctuary was done before Christmas and more recently the old altar in the sanctuary has been taken down to make room for two new structures: the reconstruction of the old altar as our main altar and eventually a new reredos or wall unit behind the altar. Please take time to look at the drawings in the foyer and ex-planation of the project. These can be found at the right rear of the main church at Saint John's and there are brochures and descriptions of the archi-tectural details. I thank all of you who have made gifts or pledges and encourage others to join us in this important work of repairs and improvements in preparation for our 150th anniversary next year. USE OF SAINT JOHN'S CHURCH will be re-stricted at times but we intend to continue to cele-brate our weekend Masses in the main church. We will at times accommodate some funerals at Saint Thomas Church if necessary. This week we may see scaffolding erected that will be used for paint-ing very high surfaces and the ceiling of the sanc-tuary and for the cleaning and restoring of the three murals. That actual work is expected to take about three weeks. Meanwhile some marble work will be done on the side altars, and the statues of the Blessed Virgin and Saint Joseph will be re-turned after being restored offsite.

New lighting will be installed in the sanctuary which will better illuminate everything in that ar-ea. I thank several volunteers who have done demolition work and also the cleaning that is need-ed. This saves us a lot and keeps our church in good shape. I apologize for any inconvenience and for the fact that at times the work being done, like life itself, is messy! PARISH RETREATS AND PARISH MISSION. Our Men's ACTS retreat is coming on March 12-15. Men, women and teens who have made an ACTS retreat have found it rejuvenates their faith life and generates new and deeper relationships with fellow Catholics. Applications are available in both of our churches and online.

Our annual Lenten Parish Retreat will be held at Saint Thomas this year on the evenings of Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, March 22, 23 and 24. Our focus will be on the Eucharist to help us enter into this time of learning and deepening of celebration of and veneration of the Eucharist.

Our 10th graders in our confirmation program will be making their retreat on Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29. Pray for these young men and women that they will open themselves up to the power of the Holy Spirit. I recently reflected in my homily on the rise of anxiety and depression among teens as something that we need to address locally as well as nationally. FLU PRECAUTIONS

Due to the fact that according to the Center for Disease Control we are presently in a high risk ar-ea for the flu, Father Paul, Father Kevin and I agree that it is prudent for our communities to re-frain from some liturgical actions. So for the time being we are going to discontinue offering the Pre-cious Blood to the congregation at Mass. We also ask our fellow worshippers to avoid contact when giving the sign of peace. A simple wave would be an appropriate way to show our friendship in Christ. It goes without saying that we should al-ways be careful when we are ill to restrict our be-havior so that we don't spread colds or viruses. Thank you for being considerate of others!

God bless. Fr. John

do.

tira o pecado do mundo.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 19, 2020

Looking back in 2019: As we cele-brate our 4 year outreach anniversary since inception on January 8, 2016,

in which we opened our parish doors

in the Year of Mercy for just a simple lunch of homemade soup, I share with you some astounding numbers from our

growth and development for the year 2019:2208 hot lunches served, 745 visits to the St. Teresa of Calcutta Clothing

Center, 324 Thrift Shop vouchers, 1826 Sunday bag lunches for 853 persons, 206 transport rides, 56 haircuts, 81 showers

since May 17, 33 loads of laundry since August 11, 17 com-puter classes, 12 Faith Matters discussions, 12 monthly

birthday celebrations, visits to family gravesites for Memo-rial Day, 2 art classes, a summer Art Fair, a cooking class for 15 persons, 19 participants in the handbell choir, a visit

to Salem Willows and a Christmas theater production at Calvary Christian Church. As you can see from the past 12

months of activities, we have been busy indeed! On behalf of every person that we serve, I thank you, our parishioners,

for your unwavering support and prayers. Your contribu-tions to our program, along with a dedicated team of volun-

teers, has truly made a difference in many, many lives. Thank you so very much! I would like to also thank all pa-

rishioners who made our Christmas party so successful for 64 patrons who had a wonderful time! In particular I thank

Music Director Holly Zagaria for her guidance and for-mation of our handbell choir, for Anne Waters who provid-ed music accompaniment for our sing a long, and for Cindy Yates who donated many extras for gifts from Santa. Out-

reach does take a village, and that is exactly what the parish-es of St. John and St. Thomas represent! How you can help at this time:For men and women: heavy gloves, size L or

XLsweaters, sweatshirts, hoodies, heavy socks, MEN’s gen-tly used winter boots, size 11-3, long Johns, jeans or sweat-pants, stick deodorant, razors, shaving cream or gelAll do-
