INFANT BAPTISMS For children under 7 years of age, the sacrament is celebrated the FIRST Sunday of the month at 2:00 pm. The parents must register in the parish office at least 4 weeks prior to the baptism. Both parents and godparents are expected to attend one catechetical session in advance, on the Wednesday before the baptism, at 7:00 pm.

SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION Before being fully initiated into the sacramental life of the Church, children over the age of 7 will need catechetical prepa-ration through the RCIC process. Teenagers and adults will par-ticipate in separate RCIA processes. CONFIRMATION and COMMUNION For those already baptized, preparation for these Sacraments will take place according to the person’s age and knowledge of the Catholic Faith. For further information contact the Office of Faith Formation Program.

MARRIAGES Couples should contact the parish office at least six months in advance to make the proper ar rangements for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Parishioners, This is the first Sunday of Lent. It is a time for prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It is an opportunity to look at how much do we pray and what is the quality of our prayer life. The discipline of fasting and also abstinence from meat and/or something that we can choose not to possess is a discipline that is meant to allow God to come first before other attractions in life. Almsgiving is joining God by doing by doing good for others as he does for us. In almsgiving we give to the poor or the needy. God continually gives us everything that we need. There are organizations that invite us to donate money or time to help people in great need. Our own church of Our Lady of Fatima, for example, is in need of your generosity and support to meet expenses. It is good to remember that all creatures of God are not self-sufficient but are in need of support. Lent is a time to discover more our need to let God help us and the value of cooperating with God in helping others. May you be open to the grace God wants to give you during this Lenten journey so you may arrive at the wonderful place that God knows you need to be.

Good Friday, April 19th, is a day of Fast and Abstinence. Limit of one full meal on this day for those who are 18 years old and have not reached 60.

Days of Abstinence

All Fridays of Lent those who are over 14 years of age abstain totally from meat.

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PÁRROCO Queridos Feligreses:

Este es el primer domingo de Cuaresma. Es un tiempo de oración, ayuno y limosna. Es una opor-tunidad para ver cuánto oramos y cuál es la calidad de nuestras vidas de oración. La disciplina del ayuno y también la abstinencia de la carne y/o algo que podemos escoger no poseer es una disci-plina que está destinada a permitir que Dios venga primero antes que otras atracciones en la vida. Limosna es unirse a Dios haciendo el bien a los demás como lo hace Él por nosotros. En la limosna damos a los pobres o necesitados. Dios nos da continuamente todo lo que necesitamos. Hay organizaciones que nos invitan a donar dinero o tiempo para ayudar a personas con grandes necesidades. Nuestra propia iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Fátima, por ejemplo, necesita de su gen-erosidad y apoyo para cubrir los gastos. Es bueno recordar que todas las criaturas de Dios no son autosuficientes, sino que necesitan apoyo. La Cuaresma es un tiempo para descubrir más nuestra necesidad de dejar que Dios nos ayude y el valor de cooperar con Dios para ayudar a otros. Que abran sus corazones a la gracia que Dios quiere darles durante esta jornada cuaresmal para que puedan llegar al maravilloso lugar que Dios sabe que necesitan estar.

ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING, AND TEMPTATION

As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we “set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God’s] presence” (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart . . . For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound.

ORACIÓN, LIMOSNA, AYUNO Y TENTACIÓN

A medida que empezamos nuestro tiempo de oración, limosna y ayuno, la lectura del libro del Deuterono-mio nos recuerda nuestro deber de ofrecer: “Dejarás los frutos en la presencia del Señor tu Dios, te postrarás ante él” (Deuteronomio 26:10). La lectura de la carta a los romanos nos refiere a nuestra oración, recordándo-nos que “La palabra está cerca de ti, en tu boca y en tu corazón . . . todo el que invoque el nombre del Señor se salvará” (Romanos 10:8, 13). Estas palabras son reconfortantes, y nos animan a pedir a Dios aquello que necesitamos y nos ayuda en nuestra oración. Por último, el Evangelio de Lucas nos muestra a Jesús ayunan-do, siendo tentado así como lo somos nosotros y además él entiendo lo que significa ser humano. Alguien una vez dijo que la tentación surge cuando se está cansado y rendido; y el mal viene y hace una sugerencia perfectamente razonable. Jesús no muestra que, con su ayuda, nosotros también podemos vencer nuestras tentaciones, tan razonable como pueda sonar.

LA DIFERENCIA La diferencia entre la perseverancia y la terquedad es que la primera viene de una fuerte voluntad y la otra no.

GRACIAS No hay deber más urgente que el de dar las gracias.
