ST MARY’S BUILDING COMMITTEE

Have you noticed how fresh and clean some of our rooms are look-ing over the past few weeks? No? Take a close look at the parish office, the photocopy/mail/entrance foyer, the ladies’ washroom (gender permitting), the hall, the corridors. All freshly washed, patched and painted. And we also now have emergency exit lights in strategic spots, much appreciated in case we lose power at some point. Also a new chimney liner and a new efficient hot water tank.

Did you know that St Mary’s has a Building Committee? Seven parishioners - Regis Trudel (Chairperson), Dcn Chuck Fink, Daniel Pion, Warren Scherr, Chris Smith, Ron St. Louis and Marian Corak - all with experience in the construction/building management/engineering trade are working behind the scenes to improve the quality of the structure in which we worship and to maintain its fea-tures. And there’s more to come!

Congratulations to the following parishioners who will be participating today (May 1) in the

will renew their wedding vows during the Mass presided by Most Reverend Terrence Pren-

Thank you for edifying us by your faithful witness of the graces of marriage.

Dear Friends

Please note at the back of the bulletin parishioners who are celebrating significant wedding anniversaries this year, particularly Rolland

and Vicki LaPrairie, 65 years; and Chris and Mary Lou Currie, 40 years. Take time to thank them for their witness to us. Married cou-

ples are a sacramental sign that God’s love for us is both beautiful and ever faithful.

The focus of the Easter season has turned to Pentecost. The Gospels of the first three Sundays are stories of the appearances of the

Risen Jesus. The fourth Sunday of Easter is always about Jesus the Good Shepherd. The remaining Sundays of Easter are about the

Holy Spirit. These Gospels are meant to help us prepare for Pentecost.

Pentecost is a very important time for our parish. We seek to celebrate it as fully as possible. Note in the bulletin both a reminder to

pray the Novena to the Holy Spirit and the information about a vigil on the evening before Pentecost.

I think it’s interesting that we have a Christmas season and an Easter season but after Pentecost there is a rather abrupt switch to Or-

dinary Time. Would it make sense to have a ‘season’ of Pentecost? Surely that would help to highlight the importance of Pentecost for

the life of the Church.

Pentecost is not, as many people assume, the giving of the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Holy Spirit is as much a part of Easter as the

death and Resurrection of Jesus. What we see at Pentecost is the manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s presence in the Church. With Je-

sus’ s Ascension into heaven and this powerful manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s presence in the Church, it is clear that a new ‘season’

has begun in the history of salvation.

From Pentecost on, the protagonist (the main character) in God’s plan is the Holy Spirit. If there is no ‘season’ of Pentecost it may be

because from Pentecost on the life of Christian disciples and the life of the Church is meant to be Pentecostal. The Christian life is a

life in the Spirit. As a Church too, we now live in the age of the Holy Spirit as we prepare for Jesus ’s return. This past Thursday in his

homily for Mass Pope Francis said, “The Spirit is always the protagonist and the Lord asks us not to be afraid when the Spirit calls us.”

May we, as individuals and as a parish, become more and more fearless at following the lead of the Holy Spirit!
