Pope: Christians Need Not Read Horoscopes to Foresee the FutureFrom Vatican Radio, June 26, 2017

Pope Francis on Monday told believers not to look to horoscopes or to consult for-

tune tellers to foresee the future; but to allow God to guide them in a journey full of surprises. “There is a Christian lifestyle” the Pope said, “a lifestyle based on three dimensions: renuncia-tion, promise and blessing.” To be a Christian always implies this dimension of stripping oneself of something, it’s a dimension that reflects Jesus’ renunciation on the Cross,” he said. There is always the need to “go forth”, to take a first step and “leave your land, your family, your father’s house.” The Bible and the Gospels, the Pope said are full of stories and episodes in which the prophets and the disciples are called to go forth. Abraham, he said, obeyed the Lord in faith, and set out for an

unknown land to “receive an in-heritance.” “A Christian does not consult a fortune teller who looks into the crystal ball or reads your palm...” the Pope said. A Christian, he said, allows himself to be guided by God who takes us on the path towards the fulfillment of His promise.

FROM the PASTOR’S DESKREVEREND Fr. PASCUAL ABAYA IV

“Come to me…I will give you rest.”Matthew 11: 30

Living in a fast changing and demanding society today, one cannot dismiss the fact that we easily get weary, anxious and troubled. More

often than not, time schedule can be so stressful that we miss to do a lot of things that are more essential in life. When we are burdened with financial problems, we get overwhelmed and life becomes unbearable. The question is, what is it really that we are really longing for in life? Could it be riches, fame, comfort, knowledge or security? At hindsight, these are all good. But if these will be our only focus and circumstances do not provide such opportunity, hopelessness lurks in and we begin to be distressed and unhappy. The desire to satisfy our cravings can be so intense that we become restless. If we are in this kind of situation, let us rethink our priorities in life. Let us redirect our minds and hearts to what Jesus is trying to teach us, “come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” In light of our call as disciples of Christ, he offers us an invitation to focus our thoughts to the Father and His offer of comfort and rest. How great saints have embraced Jesus’ invitation? Father Damien, our

beloved saint, found Jesus as his comfort serving the people of Kalaupapa. He did not seek recognition nor riches but only to be an advocate of the people in need. He served them with love and care until the sickness affected him. He never gave up until he died. St. Augustine also thought worldly allurements can bring him fulfillment in life but it did not. He only found it in Christ as he expressed it in his famous words, “my heart is restless until it rest in You (God).” We know for certain through the testimonies of great men and women of faith, that in Jesus, life can be great and wonderful. So, if you seek comfort and rest, why not open up to Jesus and see what He can truly do?

TRIP TO THE PHILIPPINES

This coming Thursday, July 13, I will be travelling to the Philippines to take my vacation and be able to visit my brother, his family and colleagues in my former archdiocese. Fr. Alfred Guerrero, our new Parochial Vicar, will be here to help in administering the Parish and tending our pastoral needs. Let us extend our warm Aloha to him as he begins his journey of mission at OLGC. Monsignor Ted and Fr. Rex will still be around to help during the weekend Masses. I will return on August 1st. Please keep me always in your prayers as I will pray for you.

MINISTRY CORNER“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.”

ENVIRONMENT DESIGN MINISTRY ”Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, ‘I leave you peace, my peace I give you” — JOHN 14:27

Do you like plants and flowers? This ministry’s focus is to enhance our liturgical services with decoration for inspiration.

Ministry volunteers help beautify the altar and the church interior by creating fresh floral and plant arrangements and maintain it with consistent care.

According to Sylvia Lee, Design and Environment Ministry Coordinator, “Belonging to a ministry involves serving the Lord. It promotes and provides me with a deeper and closer relationship with Him. My favorite saying is: ‘Do this for the Lord.’ It never fails that the Lord inspires me with ideas on how to create or manage a task in designing a floral arrangement for the altar. I feel His support all the

time. If you are wondering why getting involved in a ministry is necessary, there are many answers, but each one of us has to soul search our own situation. For me, some of the reasons I remain involved are: 1) we are the church, we are united by our faith in God; 2) when we join our heads, hearts and hands together we build our church and help our community; 3) it strengthens my faith and the Lord is my best and closest friend; 4) I am blessed by God and it’s time to give back to Him for all He has done for me. So as the Nike slogan goes, ‘Just do it’.”

We are always looking for volunteers who want to share their creativity in working with plants and flowers. You will find that it is inspiring and fun at the same time. Please call our Parish Office at 808-455-3012 for more information.

SCHOOL NEWS“Together with Christ what we believe, we can achieve.”

Our Lady of Good Counsel School’s Summer of Imagination, Innovation and Exploration has been a huge success with 66 students

participating in this pilot program. The school has been filled with the laughter and voices of our Parish children who have been actively engaged in 21st Century learning as they created movies, built robots, launched rockets, and most importantly learned to work in collaborative teams. The school’s Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) envisioned a summer program that would challenge students to think outside of the box, and learn through the design and re-engineering process. The pilot program has exceeded staff expectations. The most rewarding part of the program has been watching the children have fun while acquiring new skills. The smile on one child’s face was priceless after she successfully re-engineered her parachute.

Students have been on their feet and have expanded their learning beyond campus with weekly fieldtrips. Students had the opportunity to attend the premiere release of the movie Cars 3, skillfully sketch the Byodo In Temple, catch and release fish at the beautiful Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens, and ended the program with a breakfast buffet at the Pagoda followed by a sand castle sculpting contest at Ala Moana Beach Park!!! Rayden Domingo, 8th grader at Waipahu Intermediate, said that his participation at OLGC this Summer, “gave him an experience that he never thought he could achieve.” He shared that he has learned to cook by following directions, a talent his parents are sure to appreciate! Kennedy Ryan, 6th grader at OLGC, shared that he thought Summer School would be boring, but that it turned out to be really fun. He explained that he learned more about poetry, and had the opportunity to discuss how his personal life relates to characters

in the books he read with teacher Jamie Pertl. Staff hope to make this program an annual tradition, and most participating students look forward to next Summer’s program.

For more information about our School or Summer program please contact the OLGC School office at (808) 455-4533. We look forward to answering your questions and helping your children achieve academic success.

One of the most well known and beloved passages in scripture is the gentle invitaiton of our Lord in today’s Gospel reading: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” When we need physical rest, we sleep or take a nap. When we need emotinal rest, we sometimes take a vacation. But how do we find spiritual rest? How do we discover Christ’s peace as we grapple with the complex issues of life deep in our hearts? Good stewards find their rest in the Lord. Reflect this week on what you do to welcome the peace of Christ into your heart.
