WORDS FROM OUR SHEPHERD! I wonder what would happen if when we prayed on Sunday mornings, we tried to give God a Sabbath rest from all of our usual asking and pleading. Instead, resolv-ing to limit our prayers only to praise and thanksgiving. After all, Eucharist means thanksgiving. And besides, doesn’t God get an earful of what we want and need when we come before Him in prayer every day?

What if each Sunday became an op-portunity for us to count our blessings? I think that we would be surprised at how hard this might be. Not that we aren’t blessed. Most of us have a terrific family, loyal friends, money to cover our bills, a place to live, fairly good health, and on many days, the sun is shining and no snow. I believe that most of us don’t count the blessings in our life as often as we tabulate the curses of living. While we come up with a few thank-yous – I suspect that we pro-duce mountains of laments, complaints, and demands. I believe it is like taking a test when we were in school, we dwelt on the questions we did not know the answer to, but did not give a second thought to the questions we did

know the answers. Maybe if we spent Sunday as a day to list only our blessings, and nothing else, we might be sur-prised at how really blessed we are. That might lead us to devoting more time every day of the week to prayers of praise and thanks. Why not give it a try and see what hap-pens?

I wish to congratulate Peyton Hrics and Hailey Tra-monte. Peyton’s 3rd grade and Hailey’s 4th grade Highland Hornets basketball teams both won end of season tourna-ments. Have a Blessed week! Fr. Bill

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Families each teach their own set of values. The gospel speaks of judging, condemning and forgiving noting in effect “what goes around comes around.” “Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven.” Practice and grow with the gospel virtues of mercy and forgiveness. Be bold and stop the family blame game. Forgiving families prosper.

OUR FRIENDS THE SAINTS St. Chad of Mercia-St. Chad was born around the year 634, probably in Northumbria (York) England. What is known about him is based on the writings of Venerable Bede. With his brother Cedd, Chad studied under St. Aiden at the monastery at Lindisfarne. He was ordained in 653, and along with St. Egbert was a missionary to Ireland. In 664 he succeeded his brother Cedd, who died of the plague, as abbot of the monastery at Lastingham. At that time, three bishops were required to validate the consecration of a new bishop, but due to the plague raging through Great Britain, this was hard to do and candidates had to travel great distances for their consecration. Wilfrid who was chosen to be the Bishop of York, had to travel to northern France for his consecration, and was gone so long that Chad was consecrated bishop by Bishop Wini of Wessex and two other “dubious British bishops”. Wilfrid returned to England in 666 to find his see occupied. Pope Vitalian sent Theodore to be Archbishop of Canterbury and to straighten out the irregularities of the Church government in England. Theodore asked Chad to step down as Bishop of York and installed Wilfrid as bishop. Chad replied that it was in obedience that he had accepted the position as bishop, and in obedience he would surrender it. Theodore was so impressed with the humility of Chad that he confirmed his ordination and assigned him as abbot of Lastingham. Later in 669 Theodore installed Chad as Bishop of Mercia, and for the next two and a half years Chad walked across Mercia from coast to coast doing missionary and pastoral work. He is credited with the spread of Christianity in the kingdom of Mercia, now a part of England. Chad died on March 2, 672 probably from the plague. His memorial is March 2.
