Dear Parishioners and Visitors to Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish & Shrine,
Today we celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi or The Most Holy Body and
Blood of Christ. It is a feast that helps us to understand that the Holy Eucha-
rist we receive at Holy Mass is truly the body of Christ. It is not a symbol,
representation or simply a reminder but in its substance the very flesh of our Lord. This belief
is taken directly from Jesus’ words in sacred scripture when He speaks to His followers about
His Body and Blood. Read John 6 for our church’s scriptural basis for belief in the Real
Presence.
In 1264 Pope Urban IV asked the great theologian St. Thomas Aquinas to compose two
Offices of prayer for this feast. He did so as well as five hymns that many of us know to this
day. In one of them he teaches: (and I’m paraphrasing) “Material food first of all turns itself
into the person who eats it and it restores his losses and increases his energies. Spiritual food,
on the other hand, turns the person who eats it into Itself and thus the proper effect of the
sacrament is conversion of man into Christ.” So we are called to become what we receive, the
Body of Christ. May God help us do so.
This is an interesting story that I came across some years ago and thought that I would
share it with you. Sometimes I think that as God’s creatures, animals can, in fact, teach man
something!
Fr. Joe
Nature’s Evidence of the Real Presence.
On the evening of the last day of his October 1995 visit to the United States, John Paul II was scheduled to
greet the seminarians at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. It had been a very full day that began with a Mass
at Oriole Park in Camden Yards: a parade through downtown streets: a visit to the Basilica of the Assumption,
the first cathedral in the country, lunch at a local soup kitchen run by Catholic Charities: a prayer service at the
Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in North Baltimore and finally a quick stop at Saint Mary’s Seminary. The
schedule was tight so the plan was simply to greet the seminarians while they stood outside on the steps. But
the Pope made his way through the ranks and into the building. His plan was to first make a visit to the
Blessed Sacrament. When his wishes were made known, security flew into action. They swept the building
paying close attention to the chapel where the Pope would be praying. For this purpose highly trained dogs
were used to detect any person who might be present. The dogs are trained to locate survivors in collapsed
buildings after earthquakes and other disasters. These highly intelligent and eager dogs quickly went through
the halls, offices and classrooms and were then sent to the chapel. They went up and down the aisles, past the
pews and finally into the side chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved. Upon reaching the tabernacle,
the dogs sniffed, whined, pointed, and refused to leave, their attention riveted on the tabernacle, until called by
their handlers. They were convinced that they discovered someone there. We Catholics know they were right:
they found a real, living Person in the tabernacle. Article taken from the Secular Franciscan Order, Immaculata Fraternity, S.F.O

Stewardship Reflection Title: Stewards Drink from His Cup
“Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to
them and they all drank from it.” (Mark 14:23)
Jesus, the perfect Steward, gave thanks, just before
He gave Himself to us completely for our
salvation. He offered us the chance to drink from
His cup. In Eucharist we meet Christ
personally and, if we listen to Him, we will know
what drinking from His cup means for each of
us. Often it means our own sacrifice – giving up
some of our time, talent and treasure to do His
work on earth.

Altar Server Ministry is for boys
and girls of the parish in grades
4 - 12, who have the desire
to assist at the Altar of the Lord.
Serving at the altar is a calling and like all min-
istries, it is one to which you must remain dedicated. The
altar server is a very important part of our liturgical cele-
brations providing support and assistance to the priest.
When we become part of a ministry to serve God and His
people, we make a commitment to serve at Masses and
other liturgical services for which we are scheduled. That
schedule includes Saturday evening and Sunday Masses,
special Masses during the holy seasons of Advent and
Lent, and other liturgical celebrations. It is important to
understand that as a minister for the Church, you will be
needed on a regular basis and are expected to make
yourself available for this ministry above all other activi-
ties. If you are interested, please call the Parish Office,
856-627-2222 and leave your name and telephone num-
ber and Deacon Kevin will return your call.
Spiritual Life Formation
Showcases Science On May 21st , many attended our school’s
annual science fair. Third through eighth grade
showcased well-thought-out projects including
inventions, experiments and prototypes of space
rovers. Science teacher, Mrs. Hurd, asked engi-
neers and science teachers from other schools to
judge the top projects in each grade. Students
presented their projects to the judges.
Group and individual projects were primarily
done in the classroom requiring scientific rea-
soning, teamwork, time management, creativity
and writing. All necessary skills for academic
success!
Come visit our science center and see the
“hands-on” learning our students do
every day! For a tour, please call Principal,
