Mass Attendance - online schedule

Mass is available online at our parish website (www.ladyofhopemaine.org) . The schedule is as follows: Monday-Friday 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM, Saturday 8:00 AM, Weekend: Saturday 4:30 PM, Sunday 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Online attendance doesn't enable us to receive Communion, but does join us to the Word and to our communi-ty of faith. The following Act of Spiritual Communion was often used in the past when it was not customary for people attend-ing Mass to receive Communion very frequently.

Act of Spiritual Communion

"My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this mo-ment receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be sepa-rated from you. Amen" (St. Alphonsus)

We thank you for attending in this way. Note that during this time the Monday 9:00 AM Mass will usually also be our weekly St. Brigid School Mass.

Catholic Appeal

Many of us have received a mailing announcing the 2020 Catholic Appeal. As you know this Appeal funds many important services of the church in Maine such as Catholic Charities, as well as the oper-ations of the diocese itself. Our school receives ben-efit from the Appeal. You can designate your gift to go to a particular agency, such as Catholic Charities - Immigrant and Migrant work, for instance.

We have probably all received many requests for funding these days and some of us are facing finan-cial loss ourselves. If you are able to make a charita-ble gift, please do consider the Catholic Appeal. We thank the 136 donors from Our Lady of Hope for your gift or pledge of $24,850 or 26% of our goal this year. Thanks.

A prayer for our journey as a parish

"God of the journey, as we travel on alert us to the things that matter and open our eyes to every sign of your presence. Give us a sense of direction, or at least a sense of purpose, a sense of wonder, a sense that, in everything, You are walking with us step by step, gently leading us to the heart of things."

Printed Church Bulletins

The bulletin is available on our website. How-ever copies of the printed bulletin are availa-ble at the doorway at St. Pius X Church. There is a sheltered space there. New bulletins will be put out on Fridays.

Mass Intentions The Parish Office is open by phone and email and can make arrangements for Mass Intentions this way. At this point we are scheduling intentions for the livestream Masses only - these are the only Masses being celebrated in the parish at this time. If you wish to schedule an Intention for any other Mass, that intention will be put on a "wait" list until we know when our regular schedule can resume and what that schedule be. Thanks for your understanding.

Your Questions?

Some months ago, the bulletin ran notices ask-ing for your questions about issues of faith and Catholic life. Some interesting questions sub-mitted. Maybe it is time to ask again? If you have questions of this nature, send them in to the Parish Office and we will do our best to answer them. Thanks!

Educational Success at St. Brigid School

The Last Day of School at St. Brigid is June 12. Congratulations to all our students, families, faculty and staff for all your hard work and good spirit, especially in this last portion of the year. Enjoy the gifts of summer. Your faculty, staff and ad-ministration are working on plans for a physical reopening of school for the next school year. Student registrations and applications are being processed at the school office. Each of the Catholic schools in Maine recently surveyed their school families about how the "distance and online learning experience" is going. The Catholic schools overall have been having 97 or 98% of their pupils attending and participating in the online activities daily, a remarkable record.

A sample of the responses for St. Brigid School:

94% of families judge that they are doing pretty well, having some fun, doing our best and generally succeeding 71% of our students are regularly or sometimes viewing the School livestream Mass from St. Pius X at 9:00 AM on Mondays (all are welcome online to join us!) 89% say their child's teacher's support is "awesome"(42%), helpful and useful (27%) and clearly doing the best they can (21%) 85% note a great connection from the school and administration 78% say teachers respond quickly to questions 64% of students rate their ZOOM experience as "great" 25% would like more 86% of families feel teachers and administration is effectively communicating lessons and announcements.

Teachers and administration are meeting regularly to monitor student progress and ways to make the experience even better. Congratulations St. Brigid School community.

St. Brigid School Job Opening - Are you looking to work in early childhood in an amazing community? If you enjoy the wonders of working with 3-year-old children, we would love to meet you! St. Brigid School is seeking a lead teacher to im-plement our academic, center, and play-based program. We are a licensed facility. Candidates who are certified in Early Childhood Education are preferred. This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, 7:30 am -3:00 pm. Competitive hourly wage and the following benefits: health insurance, life insurance, paid vacation, sick and personal days, and de-pendent tuition discount. To apply, send a cover letter, resume, and three references to William Burke, Principal, St. Brigid School, 695 Stevens Avenue, Portland, ME 04013 or [email protected] Application materials will be accepted until a qualified candidate is hired.

Social Justice Social justice is an area of concern for those interested in Ignatian spirituality. The early Jesuits often de-scribed their work as simply “helping souls.” The great Jesuit leader Pedro Arrupe updated this idea in the 20th century by calling those formed in Ignatian spirituality “men and women for others.” Both phrases express a deep commitment to so-cial justice and a radical giving of oneself to others. Many organizations and colleges informed by Ignatian spirituality offer opportunities to work for social justice in the world today. WE give one example here, by Fr. Greg Boyle SJ (who will be visiting us next spring)

Words for the journey

A track becomes easier to follow the more times it is walked along. The more often that we deliberately seek the narrow path, the easier it becomes for us to find it in the future. We do not have just one choice to make in our lives, we are con-stantly presented with choices. Sometimes we choose right, sometimes wrong, and then we need rescuing. Our journey through life is like following a map, knowing only where we start from. Yet we decide where we are going, we decide which roads to use, we face the consequences of going the wrong way. In your own journey, who are your traveling companions? How do you feel about letting them go their own way? How do you make decisions? Who would you choose as your guide along the way? from Reclaiming the Sealskin, Annie Heppenstall-West, Wild Goose Publications

Our Lady of Hope Sebastian Rasle, SJ Prayer Circle June 2020 Prayer Intentions

We now start the third year of urging parishioners and friends to pray for our parish and other world needs and for one another through these prayer intentions and the idea of a Parish Prayer Circle. I hope that these intentions and the commitment to pray have been a source of grace and bless-ing to you and to our parish, school, and world. 1. For the spiritual health, vitality, and financial support of Our Lady of Hope Parish and St. Brigid School.

2. Pope Francis' Prayer Intention for June (the month of the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) The Way of the Heart. We pray that all those who suffer may find their way in life, allowing themselves to be touched by the Heart of Jesus. 3. We pray for wisdom, patience and prudence as we continue to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic. We pray that partisan advantage be set aside and the common good be our goal, that our voices be moderate and our hearts willing to listen and consider rather than judge too quickly or too harshly. We pray for those who are suffering the most in this prolonged struggle be foremost in our hearts and minds and decisions.

A Note of the Sacrament of Reconciliation From the Office of the Bishop - It is the consistent teaching and prac-tice of the Church (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, par-agraph no. 1452), that when it is impossible to receive sacra-mental absolution, a penitent should offer a perfect act of contrition (that is, for the love of God above all else). Please remind your parishioners (perhaps as part of a livestreamed Mass or a post to your website) that “such contrition remits venial sins; it also obtains forgiveness of mortal sins if it in-cludes the firm resolution to have recourse to sacramental confession as soon as possible” (cf. Council of Trent, 1551).

What Comes Next ????

July 14 Maine Primary Election: It is possible to apply for absentee ballots for the July 14 Maine Primary Election. You can do that online at www.maine.gov

We continue with our schedule of livestreamed Masses. Please let your friends and neighbors know these are happening. We've found people in the parish who have internet but did not know about the Masses on our website. Printed copies of the bulletin are available at St. Pius X. New copies are put out on Fridays.

We will soon be in touch with everyone again. We are making a second round of calls and emails to everyone. The email subject line will read will read "from Our Lady of Hope Parish" so you will know it is us. For those without an email ad-dress, we will be making phone calls. I know sometimes people don’t answer for numbers you don’t recognize. If you don’t answer, we will leave a message - and if need be you can call us back. We do very much want to be in touch with everyone.

And thanks for all you are doing: joining us online for Mass, keeping up your church support, reaching out to neighbors and family in need, praying for one another. This is clearly a challenge for all of us and will probably result in some changes in how we do things for the future. Together we can make it through. As Queen Elizabeth famously ended her Easter mes-sage "we'll meet again."

Special Prayers - During this time most funerals are being post-poned until it is safe to gather. Names have been placed on the altar at St. Pius X along with other prayer requests given us by par-ish members. If you have requests for the names of others who have died recently, please send them to the Parish Office. On May 17th we celebrated the Baptism of Olivia Brooke DeCosta, daughter of Curtis and Rebecca (Neuts) DeCosta and, now, a 3rd generation parishioner. Congratulations

“The events throughout the world have led us to reflect on how none of us can know what

the days or months will bring, but we all have a responsibility for how we

respond.” Lynda Wright

Survey Study Seeking Volunteers Members of our parish have been invited to join in this study sponsored by the University of New England. I encourage that participation. Fr Paul SJ

In the past few weeks our lives have changed dramatically as the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread throughout the world. The Center of Excellence in Aging at University of New England is conducting a research study to explore the attitudes and behaviors of older adults in relation to the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

We invite adults aged 55+ years to complete a 10-15 minute survey. Responses will be kept confidential.

Please call or email Dr. Regi Robnett ([email protected]: 207-221-4102) for more information. Thank you.

Or, register online at: https://redcap.une.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=9JRPPCHF3H. A survey link is sent 1-3 days after registration.

The Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC), a national organization, is recruiting individuals over the age of 50 to serve the poor and grow in faith. Portland, Maine is the newest IVC region in the United States. In addition to service, volunteers meet once a month with a Spiritual Reflector and gather monthly with other IVC volunteers. Due to our world-wide pandemic, some of our Portland placements have paused their activities; however, once the situation im-proves, service opportunities will open again at Cheverus High School, Catholic Charities, the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project, Partners for World Health, STRIVE, Portland Adult Educa-tion, St. Brigid's School in Portland and Holy Cross School in South Portland. Please give consid-eration to becoming an IVC service corps member. If you are interested in additional infor-mation or an application, please contact Katherine Crosson, IVC – Portland Regional Director,

at 207-808-8029. Check out the IVC Website at http//www.ivcusa.org to learn more about the organization and, specifical-ly, about IVC Portland.

Your faces....

We're looking for your faces for our parish website newly activated parish Facebook page. Send us your photos (none will be identified) at a parish event or working in your garden, baking bread, playing cards, etc. A parish is its people, not its buildings. We're looking for you! Thanks!!

Our Lady of Hope Parish Prayer Shawl Ministry knits and crochets beautiful shawls and throws for those of us that may need a little comfort during stressful times. Whether you are re-covering from surgery, illness, trauma, or suffer from anxiety, depression, addiction, mental

health issues- these shawls are fashioned together with a great deal of love, empathy and compassion for those that need God's healing touch. Each shawl is prayed over in hopes that the recipient can feel God's gentle healing when they wrap the shawl around their shoulders.

If you would like to arrange a hands free pick up of a shawl for yourself or a loved one please call the parish office number, 797-7026. Please note that parish staff is still working remotely and the parish office remains closed.

St. Brigid Awards Ceremony

Mr. Burke, St. Brigid Principal, will do a virtual presentation of awards and certifications for St. Brigid students in grades pre-K through grade 7. This will be livestreamed from St. Pius X Church (https://www.ladyofhopemaine.org/ ) on Friday June 12th starting at 10 AM. All are welcome to join us online as we recognize the achievements and lives of our students.

From our Catholic heritage...

"Certainly there can be no love without works of love, but this Beatitude reminds us that the Lord expects a commitment to our brothers and sisters that comes from the heart...A heart that loves God and neighbor (Matthew 22:36-40), genuinely and not merely in words, is a pure heart; it can see God...keeping a heart free of all that tarnishes love: that is holiness." "On the Call to Holiness in Today's World"

What happens at Pentecost?

In the Christian tradition, Pentecost is the celebration of the person of the Holy Spirit coming upon the Apostles, Mary, and the first followers of Jesus, who were gathered together in the Upper Room.

A “strong, driving” wind filled the room where they were gathered, and tongues of fire came to rest on their heads, allow-ing them to speak in different languages so that they could understand each other. It was such a strange phenomenon that some people thought the Christians were just drunk - but Peter pointed out that it was only the morning, and that the phe-nomenon was caused by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit also gave the apostles the other gifts and fruits necessary to fulfill the great commission - to go out and preach the Gospel to all nations. It fulfills the New Testament promise from Christ (Luke 24:46-49) that the Apostles would be “clothed with power” before they would be sent out to spread the Gospel.

It was right after Pentecost that Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, preached his first homily to Jews and other non-believers, in which he opened the scriptures of the Old Testament, showing how the prophet Joel prophesied events and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. He also told the people that the Jesus they crucified is the Lord and was raised from the dead, which “cut them to the heart.” When they asked what they should do, Peter exhorted them to repent of their sins and to be baptized. According to the account in Acts, about 3,000 people were baptized following Peter’s ser-mon.

For this reason, Pentecost is considered the birthday of the Church - Peter, the first Pope, preaches for the first time and converts thousands of new believers. The apostles and believers, for the first time, were united by a common language, and a common zeal and purpose to go and preach the Gospel.

Typically, priests will wear red vestments on Pentecost, symbolic of the burning fire of God’s love and the tongues of fire that descended on the apostles. However, in some parts of the world, Pentecost is also referred to as “WhitSunday”, or White Sunday, referring to the white vestments that are typically worn in Britain and Ireland. The white is symbolic of the dove of the Holy Spirit, and typical of the vestments that catechumens desiring baptism wear on that day. An Italian Pen-tecost tradition is to scatter rose leaves from the ceiling of the churches to recall the miracle of the fiery tongues, and so in some places in Italy, Pentecost is sometimes called Pascha Rosatum (Easter roses). In France, it is tradition to blow trum-pets during Mass to recall the sound of the driving wind of the Holy Spirit.

Pope Francis Announces Special Year of Laudato Si’ (Praise Be to You!)

Pope Francis on May 24, 2020, marked the fifth anniversary of the Encyclical Laudato Si’, his call for the care of the earth and the poor. He also announced a special Year of Laudato Si’, which will run through May 24, 2021. His remarks came after praying the Regina Caeli from the Library of the Apostolic Vatican Palace. He also introduced a new prayer to cele-brate the anniversary and called on the faithful around the world to pray it.

“And today also is the fifth anniversary of the Encyclical Laudato Si’, with which we sought to call attention to the cry of the Earth and of the poor,” the Pope said. “Thanks to the initiative of the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Develop-ment, the “Laudato Si’ Week, which we just celebrated, will blossom in a special anniversary Year of Laudato Si’, a special Year to reflect on the Encyclical, from May 24 of this year to May 24 of next year. “I invite all persons of goodwill to adhere to it, to take care of our common home and our more fragile brothers and sis-ters. The prayer dedicated to this Year is published [here] It will be good to pray it.”

Prayer for the Special Year of the Anniversary of Laudato Si’

Loving God, Creator of Heaven, of earth and of all that they contain.

Open our minds and touch our hearts, so that we can be part of Creation, your gift.

Be present to the needy in these difficult times, especially the poorest and most vulnerable.

Help us to show creative solidarity in addressing the consequences of this global pandemic.

Make us courageous in embracing the changes geared to the search for the common good.

Now more than ever, may we be able to feel that we are all inter-connected and interdependent.

Make sure that we succeed in listening and responding to the cry of the earth and to the cry of the poor.

May the present sufferings be the birth pangs of a more fraternal and sustainable world.

We pray to You through Christ Our Lord, under the loving gaze of Mary Help of Christians.

Amen.

Moving toward re-opening some Masses at OLH - update

Our Lady of Hope Parish will not start reopening Masses in early June. Why? *Safety concerns remain. The "elderly" (65+) and those with health conditions are urged not to attend gatherings *We do not yet have the necessary supplies for required sanitation. These are all on backorder. * We do not yet have a list of parish volunteers needed -- 2-3-4 people at each open Mass to check people in, mon-itor lines entering, the collection basket and to assist with sanitation. If you are able/willing to volunteer to be one of the crew members at the open Masses, please contact the Parish Office. We will begin to put together a roster and a schedule, for this is going to continue for some time. Without a volunteer crew we cannot open a Mass.

When we do start, we anticipate beginning with the 4:30 PM Saturday Mass at St. Pius X and the 10:00 AM Sunday Mass at St. Joseph.

There are practical difficulties in reopening *Each Mass will accommodate about 45 people * We will put in place a call-in reservation system. You will need to call the Parish Office by Wednesday afternoon prior to the weekend to reserve your seat. At that time you will need to give you name, address and phone/email contact information. This is required so that we can contact you if we later find someone was infected at that Mass. Note:

NO RESERVATIONS ARE BEING TAKEN AT THE PRESENT TIME

*When you arrive you will be checked in against the reservation list. You must wear a mask to enter. *You must sit in designated and marked pews with social distance between. People who share the same living space may sit together.

Mass under these conditions will not be Mass as we have celebrated it before all this started. We will all have to make ad-justments. We will be maintaining all our livestream Masses and know that many of you have appreciated this way to attend. If you are aware of a friend or neighbor without internet and you can safely share the livestream Mass with them, that would be great. We are also looking at other ways to reach out Parish - https://www.ladyofhopemaine.org/ - Website and Parish - https://www.facebook.com/ourladyofhopemaine/ - Facebook page.

Watch your parish bulletin, our parish website and Parish Facebook page for ongoing updates and the dates when we can start open Masses.

Let us continue to pray for one another and for a cure to this virus, the only sure way to go forward in safety.

What's cooking? - We have been asking for your favorite recipes. And, thanks to Barbara DeCoste, we have one! Here is one of her favorites. Contributed by Barbara DeCoste My favorite thing is: A recipe given to me by my sister-in-law, now 99 years old, who grew up in Crawford, Maine, on the so-called Airline, between Bangor and Calais. It came from her mother. The broiled topping came later from a friend – again, her mother’s recipe. My family grew up on this, as it was the quickest dessert I could make.

SPONGE CAKE

3 – Eggs 1 teaspoon – baking powder 1 cup - sugar 1 teaspoon – salt 1 cup – flour 1 teaspoon – vanilla or orange extract 5 tablespoons – of water Beat the eggs very well. Then add the sugar and beat well. Add dry ingredients, vanilla and water just to combine. Bake in 8 inch ungreased pan, 350° for 25 – 30 minutes. Serve plain, or split and spread jam. Dust with powdered sugar. Also, excellent base for Strawberry Shortcake. My fami-ly’s favorite though:

BOILED TOPPING

½ cup - brown sugar 4 tablespoons – butter 2 tablespoons – milk 1 cup – coconut Bring to a boil and add 1 cup coconut – Spread on cooled cake, and broil 2 or 3 minutes.

Words of advice from St. Ignatius - don't overlook the small stuff in front of you "We should never postpone a good work, no matter how small it may be, with the thought of later doing something greater. It is a very common tempta-tion of the enemy to be always placing before us the perfection of things to come and bring us to make little of the present.

Let us all persevere in the vocation to which God calls us, and not make our first loyalty an empty word. For the enemy looks to tempt those in the desert with thoughts of dealing with the neighbor and improving him or her, and to those who are helping the neighbor he will propose the great perfection of the desert and solitary life. Thus he lays hold of what is far off to prevent us from taking advantage of what is at hand." Ignatius of Loyola ( or, 'the grass is always greener..."

Trinity Sunday

In the Church's calendar, Ordinary Time (and green vestments began last Monday, after Pentecost. This weekend we are still in festive white because we are celebrating the Feast of the Holy Trinity; next weekend, white also, for the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). We finally return to a "Green Sunday" on June 21.

Though the term Trinity is not mentioned in the Bible, the doctrine is found throughout Scripture, especially in the New Testament. Readings used in the church on Trinity Sunday include Deuteronomy 4:32-34, 39-40; Psalm 33:4-5, 6, 9, 18-19, 20, 22; Romans 8:14-17; and Matthew 28:16-20.

Trinity Sunday originated in the fourth century. It was in part a response to the erroneous teaching of Arius that taught Je-sus was a created being and thus denied the deity of Christ. The famous Council of Nicaea in 325 affirmed the biblical view of Jesus as both fully God and fully human, as well as the belief in the Triune God. Though celebrated for some time prior, Trinity Sunday was officially added to the church calendar by Pope John XXII (1316-1334).Feast of the Holy Trinity, also called Trinity Sunday, Christian feast in honour of the Trinity, celebrated in Western liturgical churches on the Sunday fol-lowing Pentecost (the 50th day after Easter). It is known that the feast was celebrated on this day from as early as the 10th century. Celebration of the feast gradually spread in the churches of northern Europe, and in 1334 Pope John XXII ap-proved it for the entire church. In the church year, Anglican and Lutheran churches date the Sundays that follow this feast “after Trinity”; the Roman liturgy dates these Sundays “after Pentecost.” In Eastern Orthodoxy the first day of the three-day Pentecost feast is known as Trinity Sunday.

I AM

"I was regretting the past and fearing the future. Suddenly my Lord was speaking:

"My name is I AM". He paused. I waited. He continued, "When you live in the past, with all its mistakes and regrets, it is hard. I am not there. My name is not I Was.

When you live in the future, with its problems and fears, it is hard. I am not there. My name is not I Will Be.

When you live in this moment, it is not hard. I am here. My name is I AM." Helen Mallicoat With thanks to Jim and Pat and for the life of Brian

Transformation, a prayer of thanks to the Trinity

"I need your touch O my Creator!

The Father's touch of healing: pain released, brokenness remade the marred image restored.

The Son's touch of love: frozenness melted, loneliness assuaged tears turned to laughter.

The Spirit's touch of liberation: freedom from the past, power for the present, courage for the future.

Touch me O my Creator that I may be transformed."

Words for the journey

A track becomes easier to follow the more times it is walked along. The more often that we deliberately seek the narrow path, the easier it becomes for us to find it in the future. We do not have just one choice to make in our lives, we are constantly presented with choices. Sometimes we choose right, sometimes wrong, and then we need rescuing. Our journey through life is like following a map, knowing only where we start from. Yet we decide where we are going, we de-cide which roads to use, we face the consequences of going the wrong way. In your own journey, who are your traveling companions? How do you feel about letting them go their own way? How do you make decisions? Who would you choose as your guide along the way? from Reclaiming the Sealskin, Annie Heppenstall-West, Wild Goose Publications

I had some concerns, as I suspect most people entering senior living may have, regarding our social lives and whether we would develop friends here. Not only have my wife and I been able to maintain existing relationships but we have met several new people here… people we now consider to be our friends. The life enrichment program is designed to nurture interaction between people. The hostess in the Main Dining Room seats new guests with compatible table mates and within days, individuals become neighbors and friends. The floor we live on has become our new neighborhood. The people living here seem to understand that all of us have been new to The Park Danforth at some point. Everyone is so friendly here. My wife and I could not feel more at home.
