Bulletin Sick List Each week, the parish happily accepts names for the bulletin sick list from family members and friends. The list continues to grow, and we are unable to know the status of those on the list. Many times the petitioned per-son will themselves ask that their names be removed, in-forming that they have long since healed and no longer require the prayers. To address this, our Parish will RENEW the bulletin Sick List, beginning with the bulletin of the May 5th & 6th weekend. This will reduce the large number of names, and allow for the list to be reorganized. If you wish a name to be added to the list, simply call the rectory at (516) 541-3270, or email the parish at [email protected].
Thank you!

An appreciation for humor, irony, and laughter are authentic signs of a Christian, I believe,
since we are only able to truly laugh—to laugh with joy, not the nervous bluster of the arrogant
or insecure—because in Jesus Christ we see the definitive answer to the otherwise confound-
ing inanity and tragedy that so often mark our world. The frustrations, sufferings, embarrass-
ments, and missteps that leave many people who have no faith despondent can be seen by
Christian believers as part of the irony of human existence.
We have the chance to see a bit of “divine humor” in today’s readings when Paul, having just
made one of the most dramatic religious conversions in history, from Pharisaical Judaism to
Christianity, struggles to find acceptance among his new Christian fellows. “When Saul arrived
in Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he
was a disciple” (Acts 9:26). One can hardly blame those who shunned Paul’s first inroads into
the Church community; after all, till recently, he had been an energetic persecutor of these very
same Christians. Still, his situation has something of a tragi-comic cast to it as he tries to meet
and affirm new friends in Christ while they desperately flee from him. Some earnest interven-
tion from Barnabas saved the day for Paul, and he eventually became a pillar of the early
Christian Church.
The humor we might find in Paul’s plight in Jerusalem gives us a chance to reflect on coming
into the Church and the way we are welcomed when we try to do so. Catholics are rightly
proud of our home parishes and churches, our schools, our Altar Guilds, Men’s Clubs, and our
CYO leagues, all of which ought to remind us of the catholicity and universality of the Church.
Yet we may have experienced less than an opened-armed welcome at one point or another
when joining a new parish or a group within our parish. Catholics are famous for this sort of
territoriality, which is very often built on lines of ethnic identity and which can be seen in the
proliferation of small Catholic churches in an ethnically rich area like our own.
A sure way to celebrate our rightful Catholic identity and to make sure that it does not become
parochial or unwelcoming is to see to it that our identity is rooted first in Christ, “the true
vine” (John 15:1) and then in the more particular cultural or regional expressions of our Chris-
tian identity. This proper ordering of values gives the Church its catholicity—the unity in di-
versity that has been part and parcel of its existence from the earliest days and which continues
to strengthen the Church today.

Our program couldn’t exist without the help of many dedicated volunteers. For the 2018-19 school year, we need:
Catechists (religion teachers) in the Wednesday 5:45pm and 7:15pm sessions. On-call substitute teachers, special education teachers, and clerical office helpers. Guest speakers to share their faith experience, or to present any relevant topic, to
groups of parents and/or groups of students. If any of our parishioners have suggestions for special activities or projects to enhance the faith journey of the children and/or the families in our program, please let us know!

“We Care” Blankets
As our wonderful group of “Care
Blanket” volunteers continue to meet on
Wednesday mornings from 10:00-
11:30am at Parish Outreach, the gifts of
their love, time and talent in crocheting
and knitting beautiful blankets for seriously ill children is
nothing less than a beautiful thing!
Since our group began in November 2009, the completed
blanket count stands at 2,959. I’m sure in no time at all we
will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our
lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring
love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care.
Outreach is happy to accept donations of crochet hooks,
knitting needles, and is especially in need of acrylic yarns
in support of this effort. If you are interested in joining our

“Ministry of Consolation”
Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful
group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes
“Ministry of Consolation” team. The most valuable gifts
we can give are those that come from the heart. The pre-
cious gifts of our time, love and compassion are espe-
cially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one.
Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention
to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this
particular ministry can never have too many helping
hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector
or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time
and talents and being a part of this ministry’s call to love
and care for one another.
Thank you so much to all our volunteers for embracing
this beautiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at
516-541-1260 if you would like to volunteer. Thank you
for your consideration.

Wills and Bequests have the power to impact future generations. It’s so easy to include our Parish in your Will and still provide for loved ones. You may be able to make a simple bequest by add-ing the following language: “I give and bequeath the sum of $ _________ (or the % of), to be used for the general program of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, a Catholic Church in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.” Ensure the future vitality of our Parish with your charitable bequest or consider other Estate Plan-ning options, such as designating our Parish as beneficiary of a life in-surance policy or an IRA account. As we enjoy the beauty of Spring, we have begun Phase VI of the Memorial Garden Grotto Restoration. There is another opportunity to purchase memorial bricks, for anyone who hasn’t had a chance to do so. As a reminder, memorial text can contain a message of remembrance for our de-ceased loved ones, but can also pave our “Living Walkway,” marking moments such as; Births, Baptisms, Birthdays, Weddings, Graduations, Holy Orders, Anniversaries…etc. Please watch for the many upcoming changes, as we restore this beautiful garden dedicated to Our Blessed Mother and Bernadette. We will keep you informed in the bulletin of the different opportunities to care and share in memorializing and re-storing items in the Grotto. If you have any questions, please contact the rectory office @ 516 541 3270.
Thank you for your continued support. God Bless!

Sharing Our Gifts through the CMA
As stewards, we choose to live our lives in thanksgiving to our generous God. Our actions and words - what we choose to do or not to do - are all examples of our gratitude. Christian stewards seek ways to share what we have been given. One very important vehicle for exercising our stewardship is the Catholic Ministries Appeal. The CMA allows us an opportunity to share our gifts in many different ways.
Gift of Financial Resources: Of course, when we think of the Catholic Ministries Appeal, we think of sharing our financial resources. More than 600,000 of our sisters and brothers received support and assistance from the funds shared through the CMA each year. It is rare that just one person or one parish could touch this many lives. The CMA brings us beyond the individual, the group and the parish and unites us as one Church of Long Island.
Gifts of Time and Talent: In addition to money, the CMA offers opportunities to share our time and talent. Parishes often form CMA committees to support a smooth and organized Appeal effort. Others share their gifts by volunteering in the ministries that the CMA supports. One of the great benefits of the Appeal is communication. People are informed of the many good works, programs and opportuni-ties in this diocese. The CMA tells of the good works of the Church and communicates the opportuni-ties to share our God-given gifts.
Gift of Prayer: The Catholic Ministries Appeal brings us closer to those we help and support. We can become more “connected” with our sisters and brothers through prayer. We may wish to pray for those who support the Appeal, those who volunteer, those who receive support and even those who cannot participate for whatever reason.
The Catholic Ministries Appeal is Stewardship in action!

GABRIEL’S COURAGE is a family-centered perinatal program that assists expectant parents who have received a prenatal di-
agnosis of a life-limiting illness. It offers a multidisciplinary team approach offering compassionate support, education and birth-
planning services. Through the development of a birth plan, parents are able to determine the care they want for their baby and
make decisions for their newborn prior to birth. An important component of the program is taking memory-building photos, foot-
prints and handprints, reaffirming the precious life of this special infant. For more than a year after the child’s birth, the team will
remain in contact with the family to help bridge the feelings of loss, while validating the role of the parents. This program is open
to all! For more information: https://www.chsli.org/pregnancy-support-services or call 855-301-4CHS. All calls are confidential.
