Pastor’s Corner The Gospel today uses a literary technique
called a “Markan Sandwich.” Mark begins one story and then shifts to another story. Finally, he returns to conclude the first story.
The first story is like two pieces of bread and the second story is the “meat” of the sandwich. Hence, its title. The first story tells us about the healing of the daughter of Jairus, a synagogue official. She was brought from death to life. The middle story of the sandwich is the healing of the woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. She had looked to doctors and exhausted her funds to find a cure. Things just got worse. She reached out to touch the cloak of Jesus and felt his healing presence in her body.
Both stories focus on the healing power that comes from Jesus Christ. The healing power of Jesus continues to be available to us when we celebrate the Sacraments of the Church especially Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation. In the celebration of the Sacraments, the divine touches the human. Jesus reaches out to touch the soul to bring his healing power. The healing power of Jesus comes to us not in a fantastic way but rather through a close relationship with Him. Staying close to Jesus is the way to ensure we receive the healing we need. Daily prayer and regular participation in the sacraments is the daily walking with Jesus that leads to healing in our life. When I speak of healing, I am referring to spiritual healing. Sometimes, physical healings can take place but often I have seen that physical ailments can be a means to bring a person deeper in relationship with Christ. Like the hemorrhaging woman, the goal of the spiritual life is to reach out to Christ and “touch his cloak.” In other words, to cling to Jesus Christ in all things.
Sin is a real wound to the soul. It creates disruption and damage in our spiritual life and our relationships with others. Serious sin unattended can cause spiritual death. It is in the Sacrament of Reconciliation that Jesus touches a soul. Power flows out from him and touches the person who is wounded. Jesus heals the wound that is caused by sin.
Perhaps, someone you know has been suffering for many years from the pain caused by sin. Perhaps they have seen many doctors and exhausted their funds to find a cure. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a hidden treasure of our faith. When have you last experienced the healing power of this Sacrament?
May God shed his grace on our country as we celebrate our birthday on Wednesday! Happy Birthday USA!! Fr. Keith
