OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL DENVER, COLORADO Food For Faith Living from the desk of Fr. Mark

The Book of Wisdom (1st reading) expresses a wondrous truth today. No one can know God or God’s will unless they have received the Holy Spirit. Enlight-ened and inspired by the Spirit, we are able to open heart, mind and soul to God. This happens to those who desire it, but it is our free choice. What a choice! To be open to God’s truth and be willing to live it is to be open to the Spirit and trust it will not lead us to harm. In all the examples of saints throughout the ages, this is the source of their meaning, purpose and fulfillment, to do God’s will. An on-going human struggle is to dismiss the labels which tend to separate and divide. This is the meaning of Baptism and faith as St. Paul writes; “Neither slave nor free, Gentile of Jew, male or female, we are one in the Lord.” Today, St. Paul expresses this (2nd reading) as he requests the owner of a slave, who ran away, to accept him back, but also to see him as brother, a fellow Christian. This all follows the teaching of Jesus. “Whatever you do to the least of My brethren, you do to Me.” Following Jesus makes great demands on us in terms of seeing the human family as God’s family, and acting accordingly. Today’s Gospel says this clearly. Jesus tells us we must take up our cross in order to follow Him, a call to love, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, reconciliation, mercy and generosity of spirit, each and all reminders that the cross Jesus calls us to carry is one of being for others more than oneself. This requires sincerity, integrity and conviction. Merely agreeing to it in mind and word, will fail. Jesus is nearing Jerusalem and His eventual arrest, trial and death. So, this reminder is not severe, but clear and direct. We must give it serious thought and realize its demands; otherwise, we will be, as Jesus says, “like those unable to finish the work because of poor planning and weak resolve.” It is a great calling, this living of our faith, but it is not for the complacent, superficial, arrogant or righteous in their certitude. This walk of faith is the willingness to love.
