Annual Catholic Appeal 2019 As of April 15, parishioners have made 104 pledges totaling $37,043 toward our goal of $61,883, or 60% of goal. Last year we ended with 265 pledges and exceeded our goal by $4,000. Help us reach and exceed last year's totals so we can better serve the pastoral and maintenance needs of our parish and people. Thank you for your responsible stewardship of God's gifts to us.

DE LA OFICINA DEL PASTOR FROM THE OGLE OFFICE Dear friends Easter is the feast of resurrection. But what does resurrection mean in our daily life? How do we live differently knowing that there is life after death? I think we could compare it to the difference between a one-use Metrocard and a refillable one. If we get a one-use Metrocard, we simply throw it away once it’s emptied. Whereas a refillable card will be more carefully protected, because we don’t want to pay that one-dollar new card fee. And if we have a senior citizen half-fare card (as I do!) we protect it very carefully so we don’t have to go through the hassle of applying for a new one and paying full-fare in the meantime. In other words, we’re more careful with those things that have a longer life. So too with a life lived in resurrection hope. If human life is a “one-use Metrocard” that can be discarded when empty, then frequently it’s more likely we may adopt a hedonistic attitude toward life, or a self-destructive one, or simply a narcissistic one. Whereas if we know that our human existence is “refillable” so to speak, with an eternal life of beatific vision, we’re more likely to live in such a way as to make that possible. When we realize that life is an eternal gift, we are more likely to live in a giving way. The guide-book for living in such a way is the Gospel of Christ. Of course, the weakness of human nature and the tragic decisions we are prone to make can distort even a well-intentioned life of faith. That’s why we need to cultivate the practice of Christian virtue. Virtue is defined by St Thomas Aquinas as the “habitual inclination to do the good”. Virtue is a habit that must be cultivated if we are to succeed in living an effective life of faith. Life itself is a gift, but virtue must be achieved. Christ’s triumph over death should motivate us to live a life of total self-gift as He did, and to cultivate the virtues necessary to do so. Such is the theme of the sonnet “Easter” by Sir Edmund Spenser, a contemporary of Shakespeare. May his words (Pardon the archaic spelling!) spur us on to greater Christ-like love in our own lives.

Most glorious Lord of Lyfe! that, on this day, Didst make Thy triumph over death and sin; And, having harrow’d hell, didst bring away Captivity thence captive, us to win: This joyous day, deare Lord, with joy begin; And grant that we, for whom thou diddest dye, Being with Thy deare blood clene wash’t from sin, May live for ever in felicity! And that Thy love we weighing worthily, May likewise love Thee for the same againe; And for Thy sake, that all lyke deare didst buy, With love may one another entertayne! So let us love, deare Love, lyke as we ought, — Love is the lesson which the Lord us taught.

Msgr Ogle

Mons. Sean G. Ogle
