Writings from Fr. Walt…

Writings from Fr. Walter… “Testing the Spirit!”

Isn’t it fascinating to realize that right from the beginning of the Church, Saint Paul, a major founder of the early Church and New Testament writer, advised people not to take their experiences at face value, but rather to test them? He writes for example, “Brothers and sisters, do not be children in your thinking; rather, be infants in evil, but in thinking be adults.” (1 Cor. 14: 20) Elsewhere, we read from the apostle John, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world.” (1 John, 1) As part of this testing, much emphasis by John is placed on love. “Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.” (1 John, 4:8) Paul gets more specific. He says that “the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealously, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. . . . By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control . . . Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one anoth-er.” (Gal. 5: 19-26) The Roman Catholic Church took the lead from such passages, and tested the “spirits” ever since, and precisely by such categories as were taught in Sacred Scripture. For example, after the death of the apostle John, various visions were received by numerous people, right up until our own time. The Church, quite appropriately out of concern for the spiritual welfare of its children, tested each and every experience. A number of these experiences were accepted by the Church as having some value. Certainly, by its acceptance, the Church is saying that nothing was found to contradict Church teachings. Using the same means of discernment, the Church likewise con-demned various experiences, strongly urging that its children or followers have nothing to do with them. Some of our more famous mystical experiences accepted now by the Church have been the apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes at Lourdes , France , and Our Lady of Fatima at Fatima , Portugal . There have been numerous others, of course, but still, not all have been so accepted as a result of such testing by the Church. Now, let’s look at the acceptable visions and/or apparitions of the Church. I mean, it’s obvious that we should have nothing to do with any experience condemned by the Church! However, the story does not end here. The Church says that “Public Revelation, which must be believed, ended with the death of the last Apostle. There can still be private revelation, which is intended only for the good of the person who receives it, and does not need to be believed by others.” (United States Catholic Catechism for Adults, p. 526) When it comes to the question of Saints, much testing is done here, too. In a nutshell, a person who dies, and is believed by many people to be a saint, has his or her name submitted to the Vatican for examination or, once again, testing. What is looked for here is heroic loving behavior. Holiness is associated with behavior that is re-markably loving. Examine again the Scriptures quoted above. Holiness is not reduced to any display of supernat-ural behavior. One could easily display such behavior and not be a saint at all. But if one loves in heroic fashion, so that anybody who examines his life sees Christ in him, such a person is considered a role model for the ages, and thus a Saint! Why are miracles essential to a canonization? Loving behavior is often associated with healing, and the Church uses examples of healing as marks of holiness. And the Church will test each case, to see if such loving behavior is found. Nothing is accepted on face value. Nothing ever was. Everything is tested against the essential teaching of Love. Peace, Fr. Walter

Remembering Jesus’ Message of Divine Mercy...

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church …

Jesus speaks to St. Faustina: “Oh if sinners knew my Mer-cy, they would not perish in such great numbers. Tell sinful souls not be afraid to approach Me; speak to them of My Great Mercy. “ (Diary #1396) “The prayer most pleasing to Me is prayer for the conver-sion of sinners. Know, My daughter, that his prayer is always heard and answered.” (Diary #1397)

“Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.” (MK 11:24). Such is the power of prayer and of faith that does not doubt: “All things are possible to him who believes.” (MK 9:23) (ccc#2610)
