Increase our Faith! In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus teach about faith and service to God. It is a continuing dialogue in the Gospel of Luke between Jesus and his followers about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. The question is asked, “How do we increase our faith?” Jesus teaches us two lessons. The first is that even just a little faith, like the size of a mustard seed, is enough to do wondrous things. The second lesson is caution about knowing our place in God’s plan. We are to be servants to God, nothing else, and to his plans. Our part in God’s plans is the grace he gives to us What about times when we struggle with our faith? When we feel God is absent from our lives? Saffron is a spice and the tiniest amount will impart a luminous yellow color to a dish large enough to feed many people. The most useful attribute at a time like this is objectivity. Standing back and looking at what we are doing that is in accord with faith can be revealing. Helping those in need, commitment to family, exercise of virtues like honesty and truthfulness, and even prayer are all evidence of faith. Like the coloring of saffron, these actions show that we have faith and it is filling our lives. When Jesus spoke to his disciples in today’s Gospel about the servant doing his duty, he is reminding them, and us, that discipleship has obligations. We cannot simply speak of our faith, and do what is commanded of us like checking off items from a list. Rather we must act honestly, truthfully, and genuinely to help others. Like the tiny speck of saffron that colors an entire dish, a little faith behind our actions works wonders through the grace of God.

Rebuilding Pompei
We are rebuilding – both our church property and our parish faith community. Whether you are new or part of our founding families, we invite you to help us keep Pompei alive. Volunteers, donations, and support are needed. See how you can help – check our website and click on Rebuild Pompei at the top of the page.
Finding God in all things: We like to identify God with a day that goes well, speaking of God's presence in terms of “blessings.” Sometimes we go so far as to equate God's presence with our success or happiness. There is some truth to this, but such perceptions of God greatly limit our capacity to recognize holy presence every day. More often that not, God is in the overcoming, the action we take to navigate the difficulties of life. When we solve a problem, face the truth, wrestle through a decision, suffer through illness, wait for help, learn to pray, lend a hand, or admit our doubt – these are situations in which holy energy is powerfully at work! God is in the doing, the living, and the growing. So as you overcome today’s challenges, know that God’s love is pulsing through your struggle. (www.loyolapress.com)
