The following schools participated with us in the competition: Brookfield, Holy Family, Holy Spirit, Presentation, St. John Notre Dame, St. John the Evengelist, St. Michael, Winston Churchill, Town & Country, St. Charles, Golden Hills, Holy Rosary, Holy Trinity, St. Francis, St. Mary, St. Mel, Sacred Heart, St. Patrick, St. Rose, St. John Vianney. OLA participants included: 5 th Grade: *Gian Papio, Connor King, Jack Minor, Alternate: Erik Sparks 6 th Grade *Margaret Leppert, *Cassidy Lourim, *Andrew Enmark, Alternate: Maggie Kauderer 7 th Grade *Will Roberts, *Holly Coffman, *Casey Gilles, Alternate: Molly Wilson OLA placed 2 nd in the 7 th grade division, and Will Roberts placed 3 rd individually at that grade level. The students listed above with asterisks next to their names earned certificates of mastery for high scores. Well done! The contest was a great experience for our students, and they were outstanding! Congratulations to the Math Team and their coach, Mrs. Coffman! Grandparents Day Last Friday morning, we had over 140 grandparents and special friends show up for our GrandparentsDay Celebration. They were treated to a special prayer service led by Fr. Kiernan and heartwarming tributes and songs performed by our students. After the prayer service, they were escorted to classrooms by their grandchildren where they answered questions that were prepared for them and learned about the work their grandchildren are doing in school. They also had their pictures taken, thanks to our parent volunteer photographers. It was a wonderful morning, and we extend our thanks to Joanne Giorgi for organizing the event, the many parents who helped with the planning and logistics, and our faculty and staff for preparing the children so well. OLA Referral Program Our Lady of the Assumption has been blessed with a healthy enrollment for preschool through 8 th grade for the 2013-2014 school year. However, the incoming 1 st grade class is expecting 17 students. The enrollment in this class will impact the budget each year, so we would like to increase the class size sooner rather than later. While the PTG does an outstanding job raising funds and our school families are more than generous, the main factor in keeping our tuition rates low is full enrollment. With this in mind, we are asking all school families to join our efforts to increase enrollment for the class of 2020 by keeping Our Lady of the Assumption School in your family prayers. In addition, if you know of families who have a child or children who will be entering 1 st grade in the fall, please share with them that we have openings at our school and would welcome them to our wonderful community. You can pick up an enrollment packet to personally share with them and/or you can have them call the school for more information and a private tour. If a family you refer lists your family’s name on their application and enrolls a child in the 1 st grade class for the 2013-2014 school year, you and the family you referred will receive a $275.00 credit (the full cost of one child’s registration) for the upcoming school year as a token of our appreciation. Please let me know if you have any questions. As always, we appreciate your support. Confirmation Our eighth graders will receive the sacrament of Confirmation on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. Bishop Jaime Soto will be our celebrant. Please pray for our 8 th graders as they prepare to receive the Holy Spirit through this sacrament. Please also pray for them as they complete the last month of their OLA journey and prepare to move on to high school. Minimum Day Change In order to accommodate parents who are working on set-up at the Country Fair, we are moving our minimum day scheduled for Friday, May 17, to Friday, May 24. Faculty will be working on the WCEA/WASC Self-study on May 24. 2013-2014 School Calendar The 2013-2014 OLA School Calendar-at-a-glance will come out tomorrow via e-blast. Along with the calendar you will receive an explanation of our Diocesan In-service days, our faculty in-services, the number of school days that are required, and the minimum days we have at OLA. God bless, Robert Love

Parish News Women’s Council Meeting This work year’s final meeting for the Women’s Council will be held on Thursday, May 2, at 10:00 a.m., in St. John’s Hall. This meeting will be followed by our spring luncheon catered by Plates Café and Catering. Plates is a program of St. John’s Shelter for homeless women. Plates Café provides training that enables these women to work in food services, catering, retail, and hospitality industries. Please call Maggie Barrett at 978-0453 for a reservation and other information. The cost is only $5.00 per person and is due on Thursday, May 2. We need 55 jars of peanut butter to fulfill our goal of 160 jars for the OLA Food Locker. Help reach this goal by bringing your donations to this final meeting.

OLA Baby Shower Gift Drive: May 6 – June 2, 2013 “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.” – Psalm 127:3

So many homeless and low-income women in our community do not have a loving and supportive family to help them after delivering a baby. Instead of being able to fully experience the joy and amazement of this special time, they worry about a decent place to live and wonder how they are going to meet the basic needs of their baby. During the month of May, the month of Our Blessed Mother, families at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish and School will be encouraged to bring a donation for our Baby Shower Gift Drive. All donations will be distributed to pregnant and new mothers in need, through the Sacramento Life Center and Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home. Baby formula and baby food donations will go to our own St. Vincent de Paul food locker. Simply bring your new and unwrapped gift to the Baby Shower Gift Drive display. (A list of suggested items is available). Your generosity will shower women with love at a time when it is so desperately needed. Thank you!

For more information, please contact Adele Lozito at [email protected] or call (916) 812-7712. Respect Life Sunday & Faire – June 2, 2013

“You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works!” – Psalm 139:13-14

At the request of the Most Reverend Jaime Soto, the Life Center Mobile Medical Clinic will begin touring parishes throughout the Diocese, and Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church will be the first to host it! On Sunday, June 2, 2013, our parish will celebrate this honor with a day of worship inside our Church and a Respect Life Faire outside. The Life Center Mobile Medical Clinic will be in our parking lot and available for tours. Other Faire participants include Fertility Care Centers (NaProTechnology), 40 Days for Life, Easter’s Catholic Books, Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home, Immaculate Heart Radio, OLA Faith Formation, and Respect Life Ministry. Faire goers will have access to valuable information on a variety of respect life topics and receive rosaries, holy cards, Lifesavers candy, “I am wonderfully made” cause bracelets, and more. This is a first for the Sacramento Diocese and promises to be a great event. Save the date and join the fun! For more information or to volunteer, contact Adele Lozito at [email protected] or (916) 812-7712.

Are You Interested in Becoming Catholic? Maybe you have always wanted to join the Catholic Church but for whatever reason you haven’t been able to find the time, or maybe your questions have never been answered properly. Many people are intimidated and don’t feel comfortable asking questions regarding the Church. Perhaps your spouse is Catholic, and you’ve always wanted to share in the faith. There are many reasons people have for shying away from classes or embracing faith. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, which is the process people go through in order to become a part of the Catholic Church, can be a source of confusion. Our RCIA team would love the opportunity to welcome you and answer your questions! They will share specifics with you regarding this process at an informational meeting on Wednesday, May 22, at 7pm, in St. John’s Hall. Feel free to invite friends and ask any questions you may have. We look forward to sharing this evening with you!! Call Kimberly at 488-4626 for more information. Adoration Volunteers Needed We still are in need of some regular volunteers to sign up for an hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays in order to keep this beautiful devotion going. If you would like to help, contact Kimberly at 488-4626. Camp Pendola Registration The official summer camp of the Diocese of Sacramento, Camp Pendola, is now accepting registrations for the 2013 summer season. I’m sure many of you remember the fun of summer camp in your youth. Why not treat your 6 - 17 year old children to an experience that will help them build lasting relationships and teach stewardship of God’s creation through Christian community living in the outdoors. Please check out the Web site at pendola.org, or call 733-0141 for more information.

2013 OLA COUNTRY FAIR

OLA Blue Ribbon Pie Contest Saturday, May 18th

Bake and enter your favorite pie for the

2013 Country Fair

Awesome 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes awarded!

How to participate in the OLA Pie Contest:

1. Select your favorite pie recipe – PLEASE NOTE: PIES NEED TO BE ABLE TO BE

STORED AND SERVED AT ROOM TEMPERATURE – NO REFRIGERATED OR FROZEN

PIES PLEASE, and please no “a la mode” pies.

2. Come up with a good name for your pie like “Super Duper Apple Surprise” or “Out of This

World Cherry Pie” – the more creative you are the better, as this name will be used to

identify your pie during the judging. (We can’t tell the judges your name . . . that’s a

secret! They will know only the name of your pie, so get creative!)

3. ALL AGES ARE ELIGIBLE TO ENTER – enter as a single baker or team up with your

child/parent or with a friend – please limit “teams” to 2 person teams.

4. Send in your pie recipe along with a completed entry form (see below) to the OLA

School Office no later than Wed., May 15th.

5. On Saturday, May 18, between 1:00 pm and 1:30 pm, please deliver your pie to

Christine Sanfilippo in the OLA gym kitchen. Please submit the pie in a disposable pie

tin. Please don’t forget to label your pie with your name AND the name of your

fabulous pie (even though the judges won’t know your name, Christine needs that

information, so she can identify the winners – so remember pie name AND your name on

each pie)!

6. Come back to the main stage area around 2:45 pm Saturday afternoon, and watch as your

pie is judged by very important members of our OLA Parish and School community! Pie

judging will be based on individual pie appearance and flavor. Winners will be announced

around 4:00 pm, and pieces of all pie entries will be sold for dessert during the Saturday

evening dinner. QUESTIONS??? PLEASE CALL CHRISTINE SANFILIPPO AT 761-8144

HAPPY BAKING!!!
