“Welcome Home” is a diocesan initiative to invite all Catholics to experience the grace of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Confession is a wonderful opportunity to set aside our sinful ways and to draw closer to our Lord. Confessions will be held every Monday during Lent, from now through April 3rd, from 7:00-8:30 PM in every Catholic Church in the Diocese of Paterson. Don’t be afraid! Information will be provided. Ask the priest to help you. Experience the gracious mercy of God!

John’s gospel provides compelling encounters between the Lord and those who are seeking the light that only the Lord Jesus can provide. Last week as we heard Jesus and the Samaritan woman conversing at Jacob’s well we were drawn into the dialogue ourselves; we too are part of the gospels because they are the guide above all others that enable us to respond to the Lord’s call to communion, to friendship. The Samaritan woman boldly asked Jesus to give her the gi of the living water he promises: “Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming to draw water” (John 4:15). That water is the divine life that Jesus promises us and it is the only water that sa sfies the deepest longings of our hearts. This week we meet the blind man who is healed of his blindness and more vitally, given spiritual vision through his coming into the presence of the Messiah and his profession of faith in him. Though physically blind, this man has sharper vision than most.

Like the Samaritan woman the blind man is something of an outcast. The disciples ask Jesus who is to blame for the man’s afflic on of blindness: “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind” (John 9:1). Jesus quickly moves the disciples away from that line of thinking as he answers them: “Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him. We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day” (9:4). In other words, no afflic on, even physical blindness, can prevent us from walking in the light of the divine life that Jesus promises us. Jesus tells the blind man: “Go to Siloam and wash” (9:6). The connec on between the blind man’s healing, his receiving sight, and bap sm is unmistakable. Through the life-giving waters of bap sm we are given the gi of spiritual sight that helps us navigate through this life with its obstacles to embracing the gospel to reach communion with the Lord Jesus. We should seize the moment to see clearly and follow the Lord at once.

Benedict XVI, reflected on the meaning of this gospel passage for the Fourth Sunday of Lent:

The Sunday of the man born blind presents Christ as the light of the world. The Gospel confronts each one of us with the ques on: ‘Do you believe in the Son of man?’ ‘Lord, I believe!’ (Jn 9:35-38), the man born blind joyfully exclaims, giving voice to all believers. The miracle of this healing is a sign that Christ wants not only to give us sight, but also open our interior vision, so that our faith may become ever deeper and we may recognize him as our only Savior. He illuminates all that is dark in life and leads men and women to live as ‘children of the light.’

Our profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, his gospel, and the Church that he founded, lights our way with the gi of true vision. The days of Lent are quickly passing by. This is the me for us to examine our lives closely and to look at those places where we might be blind, or turning a blind eye, to our need for change, for conversion. The Pharisees in the gospel believed that they were righteous and beyond reproach; they would not entertain the idea that they might have the need to change. The Pharisees are in disbelief that this blind man’s profession of faith in Jesus gave him sight: “Surely we are not also blind, are we?” (9:40); so confident are they of their own grasp on the truth, the Pharisees miss the gi of God in their midst in the person of Jesus. Jesus tells the Pharisees that it is not sin that causes true blindness but rather that true blindness is the result of cu ng oneself off from the life that God offers: “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you are saying, ‘We see,’ so your sin remains” (9:41). When we do not embrace our need for conversion, for change of heart, then our spiritual vision is limited, circumspect. Lent is the season for clearing away cloudy vision to see the radiance of light that is found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Bishop Serratelli has asked all parishes of the Diocese of Paterson to have confessors available for the Sacrament of Reconcilia on on the Monday evenings of Lent between 7:00-8:30. If you have been reluctant to come to the Sacrament of Reconcilia on, have been away from confession for some me or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday a ernoon confession

me, this is a wonderful opportunity to re-connect with Christ and his Church. There is no such thing as having been away from confession “too long” to come back. Celebra ng the Sacrament of Reconcilia on is the opportunity to let go of burdens that many carry for a long me. The Lord of mercy is always ready to pardon, to heal, and to welcome you home to his embrace. Please think about using Lent as an opportunity to celebrate sacramental confession and absolu on.

“W Y O C Y .” Those familiar words from the Sta ons of the Cross remind us that the Lord’s redemp on of sinners through the pouring forth of his blood on the cross con nues for us. The Lord’s redemp on of us and his drawing of us into friendship with him is experienced in a deep way when we walk with him along the Way of the Cross. S C B M B S

F L 7:30 . The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adora on before the Sta ons of the Cross. The period of Eucharis c adora on will conclude with Sta ons of the Cross and Benedic on of the Blessed Sacrament. Please take some me to make a visit to church for adora on of the Blessed Sacrament.

Please join us for Sta ons of the Cross, a devo on that helps us to unite ourselves more closely with the Lord on the way to Calvary and to appreciate that the Lord Jesus walks with us as we carry burdens that are, at mes, very heavy and who assures us that the crosses that we carry are never the end for us but an opening to eternal life that we will share with the Lord who opened for us the gates of paradise. The Sta ons of the Cross help to assure us that in our difficul es the Lord walks with us and strengthens us.

T R S C S

Thank you to the Rosary Society ladies, and some gentlemen who they have dra ed, for making the cannoli sale such a great success. The devo on of the Rosary Society to our parish and their selfless work of pu ng together the Cannoli sale each year is a great gi to our parish. Thank you!

I O C L G G H

Thank you to all of those who have par cipated in our increased offertory plans. Your increased support of our parish is a gi that helps to provide for our stability and growth into the future. Your par cipa on is vital and important. Please consider taking part in the increased offertory plan if you have not already done so.

For the Chris an, the death and resurrec on of Jesus Christ is the event that makes sense of all of the experiences of our lives – because of his triumph over sin and death we share divine life and the hope of life with him in eternity. We care for one another along the journey of faith.

Through the sacraments we share in God’s own life. That is why the Church that Jesus Christ founded is so important; through her we celebrate the life giving mysteries that Jesus Christ gave us and we are united as a community of believers who care for others.

When we celebrate the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, we stand before the inexhaus ble power of God’s love; humbling is the truth that we par cipate in God’s life strengthened by the Sacramental life of the Church. Our parish is the center of those celebra ons.

As pastor it is my responsibility to help our parish sustain the vibrancy of our community of faith through our deepening faith in the Living God. We all share in that goal. Your generosity and goodness has never failed in helping us meet the many challenges we have faced in caring for the temporal needs of our parish. I thank you and keep you in prayer always, especially at Mass.

Your generosity to your parish has never failed. No one can do everything but everyone can do something to maintain a bright future for our parish. Your goodness will return to you as a blessing.

Lenten Regulations on Fast and Abstinence

The Lenten regulations concerning fast and abstinence are as follows:

The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty - All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year) extends from the First Sunday of Lent to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.

Adoration, Benediction & Stations of the Cross

Each Friday evening of Lent we will have Stations of the Cross with Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament on Friday evening at 7:30 in the church. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adoration before the Stations of the Cross. The period of Eucharistic adoration will conclude with Stations of the Cross and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Please take some time to make a visit to church for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Faith Formation Corner Attention 2nd Grade Parents As weekly mass is an integral part of our lives as Catholics, it is important that our children attend weekly mass. This is especially important as they prepare for the Sacrament of First Eucharist and equally important after they receive their Sacrament. While our parish offers many masses during each weekend for us to attend, during the next several weeks, we require that all children who will soon receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist, attend the Sunday 9:30 AM mass together as a group. Attending mass together began on Sunday, February 26, 2017 and continues through each of the remaining weekends of preparation.

These dates that your children will be attending 9:30 mass together are as follows:

3/26, 4/2, 4/23, 4/30

We require at least one parent or guardian to accompany and stay with the child during Mass. When you arrive, please sign the attendance form that will be located at the front and rear entrances of the church. After Mass please bring your child to their respective classroom for their weekly instruction.

Thank you for your cooperation and support. We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200.

Confirmation Program OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES Please see the following list for possible ministry opportunities that all students can become involved with:

Fr. English Food Pans Please support the Fr. English Center and support a family or two by making a meal for them to enjoy. Food pans and recipes are available during each confirmation session. All pans should be clearly marked with the meal that it contains and they should be brought back to the next month’s confirmation session FROZEN.

Altar Servers This is an important ministry for our parish and your support and involvement once per month is needed! We are especially in need of servers for the Saturday and Sunday evening masses. Please contact the Parish Ministry Center (973-256-5200) if you are interested in becoming an altar server.
