The readings that we hear for the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time speak of our search for God. As we journey through life with its cares and worries it is easy to forget that while we need to open our hearts to the power of God, it is God who seeks us out first. We can never adequately grasp the abundance of God’s grace or the intensity of his will to save us by giving us the gi of his divine life. When we are dealing with anxiety and great worry we are distracted from the voice of God which always calls us to friendship and life.

God is always seeking to draw us into closer friendship, communion with him. Some mes our vision becomes clouded and we lose sight of the fact that God is seeking us out in what seems to be unlikely people, events, and experiences. Fear, disappointment, selfishness can cloud our vision so that we are not able to see God’s ac on in our lives; noise and confusion can keep us from hearing the voice of the Good Shepherd who calls us to himself. When we have big problems we usually want big answers. God, however, usually speaks to us quietly and makes us part of the solu ons to our difficul es.

In our reading from the first Book of Kings we find the prophet Elijah seeks refuge from the voca on God has given to him; the prophet has grown weary of preaching to the Israelites who are apparently determined to ignore the word of God that the prophet Elijah speaks to them. Elijah is seeking solace and trying to shut the world out. We all know that feeling of wan ng to get away from everything and everyone so that we can have just a moment of peace. When we feel that all of our hard work and effort are not producing any tangible results we can get disgusted and be tempted to give up trying. This is the a tude of Elijah as he has reached his breaking point.

Like our own experience, Elijah shows us that turning in on ourselves when we are frustrated is not an effec ve answer to sor ng out our problems with God’s help. God does not give up on Elijah or on his plans for Elijah’s voca on as prophet. Elijah could not escape the power of God’s love because God was intent on calling Elijah to respond to his purposes for his life. When the Lord gives us work to do in his Name he will also give us the for tude and the strength required to bring that work to comple on.

The L intends to call Elijah out from a place of desola on and darkness and into his own presence. As Elijah se les into the cave on the mountain of God, Horeb, God calls to him: “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the L ; the L will be passing by” (1 Kings 19:9). The vision that comes from faith gives us the ability to understand and interpret our experiences in light of God’s own vision for our lives. But we need to listen carefully. A en on to God’s will and God’s voice is an essen al dimension of fulfilling our God given voca ons.

As Elijah stands on the mountain, completely vulnerable to the elements, he witnesses a strong wind that is able to crush rocks, and then he experiences an earthquake, and even fire. Elijah might have expected to find God’s presence in those powerful forces of nature. But that was not the case. A er the fire had passed, “. . . there was a ny whispering sound” (19:13). Some mes God’s voice is so ; that does not make the voice of God any less powerful.

Elijah had been resen ul of his calling because so many of the people of Israel had turned away from their covenant rela onship with the L while he had remained faithful. Elijah was to be a messenger of Israel, calling them back to faithfulness; he was not to stand in judgment over them. It is easy to lose sight of the heartaches and struggles of others when we ourselves are not at peace or when we feel stressed to the point of breaking. It is when we our overwhelmed that we have cross words and give up on the virtue of pa ence. But God does not lose pa ence as easily as we do and so there is always hope that we can keep going in order to do God’s work.

We are not called to be judgmental but to call one another to deeper faith through the depth of our own faith. The L does not allow Elijah to remain in his isola on, stewing in his own resentment, but rather reinforces his role as a messenger of the L .

In that ny, whispering, murmuring sound Elijah recognizes the presence of God: “When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave” (19:13). The lesson is clear. God always seeks us out but we do not always encounter God’s presence where we want to find him. God is the one who sets the terms for our encounters with him but God accompanies us always even as we are struggling to understand what he is calling us to do.

God gives us a mission to carry out in his name and if we turn away from what he calls us to we never really know that gi of peace. God seeks us out as individuals and calls us to friendship but we must keep our ears open to hear the sound of God’s voice. We can o en experience God’s presence in the person we would least likely expect to be a vessel of God’s grace for us, or we may meet God in that me of pain or loss when the words and compassion of others reminds us that God never gives up on us, or we might be surprised to learn that we have brought God’s presence to others. When we are tempted to give up on what God calls us to, Elijah challenges us to stand with confidence on God’s mountain and to be led by him.

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 3)

In the gospel reading, we pick up where we le off last week. The huge crowd of more than five thousand has been fed. Now Jesus “. . . made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds” (Ma hew 14:22). For his part, Jesus goes up the mountain “to pray by himself” (14:23). By the me that evening arrived, Jesus was alone in solitude. There was, however, no solitude in the boat where the disciples were: “. . . the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it” (14:24). The rough sea and the winds must have been a cause of great fright in the disciples. There was something more startling to come.

In the midst of this storm, Jesus “. . . came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. ‘It is a ghost.’ they said, and they cried out in fear” (14:25-26). Jesus calms their fears immediately: “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid” (14:27-28). Peter always wants to be where Jesus is and so as this remarkable experience is taking place, Peter asks Jesus: “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water” (14:28). Peter does as Jesus instructs him: “Come” (14:29). But then Peter experiences the strong wind and he loses his confidence and he begins to sink. Peter cries out: “Lord, save me!” (14:31). Seeing Peter’s fear: “Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, ‘O you of li le faith, why did you doubt’ ” (14:32). The Lord challenges us to use the faith that we have to do great things out of love for others; in that way we make our lives a gi to the Lord.

Like Peter we are buffeted by the storms of life that can cause us to doubt everything and cause us to believe that we are bound to sink into despair and darkness. But that is not the case. As o en as we cry out, like Peter, “Lord save me!” The Lord will rescue us with his loving presence. The response of Peter and the disciples to the Lord’s saving love and powerful gi of grace must be ours as well: “Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, ‘Truly, you are the Son of God’ ” (14:33). We pray for the strength to keep our hearts open to the presence of God so that our faith guides us and helps us to navigate our way through life only with God’s help.

This week we begin celebra ng First Holy Communion for the children of our parish who were not able to celebrate the sacrament in the Spring as we had planned. We ask God to bless our First Communicants and their families on this happy day. First Holy Communion is one of the happiest days in the life of the parish as we celebrate with young people coming forward to receive the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. This year, we will celebrate the Sacrament for young people over several Saturday mornings.

A special word of thanks goes to Mrs. Paula White and Cris na Cas llo for all of their faithful work in preparing the children for the sacrament. Thanks too, Mrs. Josephine Lyons for all that you do to keep our Faith Forma on Program organized. And thanks always to Trish Filiaci for giving some much devoted a en on to our Faith Forma on young people. I want to say a special word of thanks to parents for bringing your children to this day. Online Giving Will Help Sustain Our Church

Meeting your giving goal will help support our church’s many ministries dedicated to strengthening our church’s community and community at large.

Online Giving allows you to make donations, payments and pledges via your smart device or computer to our church. Search the App Stores for Online Giving or go to www.OLGapp.com and register with our parish. Set up your gift today or consider an additional gift via our website on your smart device. Visit www.holyangelsrc.org and click on the “Donate” tab to make a one-time or recurring donation. For parishioners who want to avoid credit card and bank transaction fees, we strongly encourage the free bank bill-payment services that many local banks offer. For example, both Bank of America and Chase offer Bill Pay services that allow the account owner to set up a weekly automatic payment via check in a set amount to the parish. This paper check is then mailed by the bank to the parish on the date the account holder sets. This works very well and is easy for most parishioners to set up and use.

Faith Formation Corner

ATTENTION PARENTS! FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION Please visit our website https://holyangelsrc.org/ to view a recently created FAITH FORMATION link. Under it you will find information related to our curriculum this year, program guidelines and expectations, parent resources and registration for the upcoming year! Registration should be completed online and submitted electronically, along with payment. If you have more than one child to register, EACH CHILD MUST BE REGISTERED SEPARATELY, so the fee is divided when you submit payment for each child. For example the total fee for 2 children is $135 which will be $67.50 per child, when registering each separately. If you have 3 children to register, the total is $175, which will be $58.50 per child when you register each separately. PLEASE NOTE on the registration form....The registration deadline is AUGUST 15th, after which a $100 late fee will be charged (no extensions). It is therefore important to log on and complete this registration process ASAP!

ALSO - PLEASE take some time to review the Links: Curriculum and Materials, as well as Program Guidelines and Expectations, as the program will be exclusively remote this year. Loyola Press has created an interactive eBook series, which is the same as the hard cover book, however, through the eBook, the children can access games, songs, Scripture, etc., which is a really nice feature. I hope you will find the Parent Resources link valuable, as you help your children grow in faith through daily prayer and discovery of God's presence in the experiences and encounters of everyday life. It will certainly be a Faith Formation year unlike any we have ever encountered, but I am confident that we will continue to partner together to ensure your children continue to learn the important tenets of our Catholic Faith, and most importantly meaningfully apply the teachings and example of Jesus Christ in their development of a relationship with God.
