Bishop’s Annual Appeal Diocese of Paterson

Here I Am, Lord! While there are many ways to give to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, there is a particularly beneficial opportunity if you are 70 ½ or over and have an IRA. If you are in this category, the IRS requires

you to take a required minimum distribution from your IRA each year. As a result, this distribution is added to your taxable income and increases the amount of taxes owed to the government. However, instead of taking your required minimum distribution, you can instruct your IRA investment manager to donate this distribution to a charity such as the Bishop’s Annual Appeal and this automatically omits this amount from your adjusted gross income. This tax benefit can be realized by all qualifying individuals, whether you take the standard deduction or itemize your deductions. This can be a significant benefit to you and a great way to support the work of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. If you are considering making a charitable donation using your IRA required minimum distribution, please be sure to first discuss this with your financial or tax advisor to make sure it is right for you.

. Your support is necessary to complete this essen al repair. We already have $220,100 in pledges to date and over half of that has already been fulfilled. We are well on our way to mee ng our goal of $250,000. For those who have already contributed, thank you. If you have already contributed by making a pledge please complete the form on page 8 in order to reserve your commemora ve brick for the Holy Angels Walkway of Remembrance. We are very close to reaching our goal of $250,000 – please take the opportunity to be part of this great step in providing for the future of our parish.

P O C T , . T – . The sidewalk repair, the new curbs, new steps (now according to code) and the new railings are paid for. The railings should be in soon on the steps. That is roughly $80,000 when all is said and done. Phase Two will be scheduled for October with a $50,000 expenditure for comple on of that phase. Phase Three will likely be done in the Spring, 2019. It is a big project and we are going to complete it step by step as the funds from the campaign come in to complete the en re project. W B D T L F

H A W R . We are moving ahead with these projects and I thank you for your support. Our goal of $250,000 is ambi ous but we are well on our way to mee ng and surpassing that goal! Please be a part of this campaign in order to provide a solid founda on for our parish’s financial future. Anyone who contributes any amount during this phase of the campaign will be able to designate an inscribed brick for our Walkway of Remembrance. I believe that the Memorial will expand over me and serve as a tribute to loved ones and most of all become a sign of our gra tude to God for the gi of Angels who guide us. When the campaign concludes, each brick will require an $800.00 contribu on that may be sa sfied over eight months. Please consider being a part of this important campaign now. So many of our parish family have become a part of this ambi ous project and I ask you to become involved as well. I . Around the same me as the emergency repairs on the school building three years ago, I had hoped to be able to repair our parking lot. Regre ably, the cost of the es mates I obtained in 2015 has risen between 10%-15%. It will never get any cheaper to repair the parking lot – the cost, now, is well over $225,000. There was a minor repair made to the parking lot for around $6,000 two years ago to address the most damaged part. I am embarrassed to tell you that was a bad decision on my part. T . The area near the elevator and the chapel now becomes like a lake when it rains and floods in the winter and freezes over. It is not safe. But as vital as safety is, as essen al as the Banyan School and the rental of our property is to our future, that first impression that is made when people come to our parish is not incidental. Repairing a parking lot isn’t simply a construc on issue. I , . A parking lot that has holes, cracks and is unsafe does not present a welcoming message to parishioners and visitors

C . W . Now, we need to address that final exterior piece – our parking lot.

With your help, the first impression that everyone will get the moment they pull into our Church grounds is that Our Lady of the Holy Angels is a thriving, ac ve and welcoming Catholic faith community and the jewel of Li le Falls and star of faith in the Diocese of Paterson that we know it is. You will recall that when we prepared to renovate the church it was said, “It will never work.” You will remember that before we built the elevator, it was said, “Impossible.” Look around at this building. Look at that elevator – how many would find it impossible to get into this church building without it. You made it happen. We will meet this challenge as well. I have no doubt that we will make this happen. No one can do everything but everyone can do something. I

. Every household that makes an investment in this campaign has the opportunity to have a brick engraved with their name, or in memory of a departed loved one, and placed at The Holy Angels Walkway of Remembrance that will be placed near our bell tower – which is, by the way, the Na onal Shrine of Our Lady of the Highway. Each brick is a symbol of our faith and the reality that we all form this community with the strength of our faith built on the founda on stone of Christ. Please know how grateful I am to you for your support and investment in our future. N ,

Welcome back to all of our young people who began our Fall Faith Forma on program last week. I am happy to say and encouraged, as we all should be, by the fact that our enrollment for fall Faith Forma on has increased this year. That is because of the commitment of parents who want to give the gi of faith to their children and because of the outstanding work of our Coordinator of Faith Forma on and all of the Catechists and assistants who contribute so much to making our Faith Forma on program work so well. I want to reiterate how grateful we are to the parents who entrust their children to our Faith Forma on program; it is a privilege to assist you as you carry out the promise you made when your children were bap zed to raise them in the faith. Our faith is a gi and you are sharing those gi s of faith, hope, and love that we find in the person of Jesus Christ and his Church. A special thanks to Ms. Trish Filiaci, our Coordinator of Faith Forma on, for countless hours spent in prepara on for the beginning of the Faith Forma on year and a special and very hear elt thanks to all of the catechists who make our Faith Forma on program as well as our young adults who help us with so many of the details that help our Faith Forma on program to run smoothly. A special word of thanks belongs to Mrs. Paula White for all of the good work that she does in preparing our First Communicants for the celebra on of First Eucharist in the spring. God bless all of those young people and their families taking part in this Faith Forma on year. It is a joy to have you as a part of our parish. The gi of our faith in Jesus Christ and the strength that comes from the sacramental life of the Church is one of the most important things that can be given to children. We all pray that this will be a me of grace for the children of our Faith Forma on program this year so that we will grow in friendship with the Lord Jesus and so that his gospel will always guide their lives.

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 5)

B ’ A A “H I , L ”

The Diocese of Paterson has begun our Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The theme for this year’s appeal is one that is familiar to all of us: “Here I am Lord” It is our basic Chris an voca on to feed the hungry, quench the thirsty, and to befriend the stranger. In Ma hew’s gospel the Lord tells us that whenever we care for those in need we are caring for him: “In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it for me” (Ma hew 25:40). We place our me, our talent, and our treasures in the Lord’s hands to serve in the many ways we are asked to. The Bishop’s Appeal gives us the opportunity to respond to all of those who are in need of our compassion. The “Bishop’s” Appeal is in many ways a misnomer. The Appeal is really used to support the work of Catholic Chari es, which carries out a mul tude of ministries, educa on of future priests, and the care of ill and re red priests. The Appeal also supports inner-city educa on. The Appeal is used to serve the most important services that the Church provides in the name of Christ. The Appeal directly funds the work of Catholic Chari es and so many other ministries that help to educate, give care to the sick, and to give counsel and support to families and individuals who have nowhere else to turn for help. As in years past, our parish goal for the Appeal is an ambi ous one: $44,520. The members of our parish are always generous and suppor ve of the work of Catholic Chari es, par cularly, that serves the marginalized and those who need the love and support that the gospel calls us to. As we began the Appeal last year we hoped to surpass our goal and through your generosity we did. Your generous support of the Appeal and the good work that it does assured that we reached our goal; I hope this year we will surpass it again. No one can do everything but everyone can do something; we can all play a role in the Appeal so that we help to feed and clothe the poor and those who need us the most. The Appeal also helps us meet our own needs here in our parish through a rebate that we receive if we exceed our goal. I am happy to report that through your generosity and support we have been able not only to meet our parish goal but to exceed our goal and thus receive a rebate that helps us with our parish budget. Our responsibili es to the diocese are not op onal – we are responsible as a parish to meet our Appeal goal and so once again, I ask for your generous support of the Appeal by prayerfully considering a contribu on to the Appeal. We will be hearing about the Appeal in the weeks ahead and so I ask you to be open to one more, but yet a very important, request for your generous support. In order to understand the good work that the Appeal does, the informa on below provides informa on about how your support contributes to the work of so many important ministries. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal funds the following:

• Our Catholic Chari es agencies The majority of the funds raised for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal help support our Catholic Chari es Agencies. These agencies offer a wide range of services, including:

• Day care and extended day care • Transporta on services for the disabled • Family counseling • Emergency food bank • Adult day care • Group homes for adults with disabili es • A er school and summer programs • Runaway shelter • Clothing pantries • Substance abuse counseling • Home repairs for seniors

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 6)

Sincerely in Christ,

Monsignor T. Mark Condon Pastor

• School Support

The Bishop’s Annual Appeal has provided a significant por on of the funding to the Elementary School Subsidy Fund. Over the years, millions of dollars have been allocated to many of our most needy elementary schools. These grants were for many needs, such as technology grants and grants for capital needs like new windows or school desks. This year, these funds will be used to support the inner-city school consor um, which aims to help these schools with their opera ng needs.

• Seminarian Educa on and our Diocesan Priests’ Re rement Residence The Bishop’s Annual Appeal helps fund the educa on of our seminarians and Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ re rement residence in Chester. This is especially important since the number of seminarians has increased drama cally in recent years, along with the cost of their forma on. The Appeal helps both of these groups of men: those who are preparing for a life me of service to the Church and those who have faithfully served for decades.

• Parish Rebates Half of the amount received over our parish goal will be returned to our parish for our own needs.

Not only does the Appeal support many worthwhile ministries throughout the diocese, it will also help our own parish if we reach and exceed our goal.

93 cents of every dollar raised was applied to Appeal goals as outlined above. The 7 cents balance for fundraising expenses is far below the guidelines recommended by the Be er Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance. Your generosity and support is used to support these very noble endeavors.

Yankee Candle Sale Now through January 9th

Yankee Candle Fundraising offers two ways to shop – through the catalog available at the Parish Ministry Center and online. And we’re asking you to help us sell two ways as well – order for yourself and contact friends and family to order too. The best thing is that 40% of every sale goes to Holy Angels.

When shopping the catalog, you can sample some of the candles through the scented pages. Orders are shipped directly to Holy Angels for pick up. To shop online, visit www.yankeecandlefundraising.com, enter Holy Angels’ Group #990001181 in the “Start Shopping” box, and then click on the “Start Shopping” button. To invite friends and family, simply click on the “Seller Login” button on the website www.yankeecandlefundraising.com, fill out the “Sign up to be a seller” form and use the Group #990001181 to register. Or use the Yankee Candle Mobile App – it’s an easy way to invite phone and social contacts to shop online! And their orders ship directly to them. Please note: Sales tax and shipping charges may apply to online orders. Orders will be delivered 2-4 weeks from receipt of order.
