Swimming Carnival We were so lucky with the weather last Friday and had a wonderful day at Macquarie University Aquatic Centre for our swimming carnival. Thank you to our students for their enthusiasm, good behaviour and efforts in the pool. The carnival covered so many areas of important learnings for children. They socialised with each other away from school, they displayed physical skill, they swam in races to support their team, they did their personal best, they showed persistence, they were role models, they depended on each other, they encouraged each other and they learnt resilience when they weren't always successful. What valuable life lessons to help our children as they grow to live happy, fulfilled lives. Many thanks to our parent helpers who officiated as timekeepers, judges, marshals and fed the workers. We very much value your support, as always. Special thanks to Miss Bosley for her efforts in organising the carnival and co-ordinating the day and also for co-ordinating the activities for those classes that had a fun day back at school. Thanks too to the staff for all their efforts on the day ensuring that the carnival ran smoothly and kept to time. A great day was had by all. Photos on page 6. OLOR OPEN DAY FOR KINDERGARTEN 2016

Tuesday 10 March 2015 at 9.30am - 11.00am

Tours of the school, hear the band and choir and meet the Principal and staff.

Tell your friends and neighbours.

At the end of last year we received funds from the P and F for resources in the school. You might have noticed terrific new storage bench/seats in the Kinder classrooms and on the mezzanine level we have new furniture to accommodate a whole class. Additionally we purchased new readers for use across all classes. These readers are linked to an online portal with great activities to supplement English group work. Many thanks to our P&F for their ongoing support. Traffic A reminder that the morning drive-through is drop off only. Parents pull into the curb and children alight without parents getting out of the car. If you wish to have a final hug, fix uniform or check bag please park in the parking bays. From next week, our P&F Executive have volunteered to supervise morning drop off. They will be wearing orange vests. Feel free to say hello. In the afternoon for ease of traffic flow we ask that cars do not attempt to turn right into the school, across the traffic f low, from Yardley Avenue. This holds up traffic in all directions as no cars can get past. Double parking in the staff car park is not permitted and blocks traffic driving through. Children are not to run out and jump in cars as parents drive past the school. Parents continue to shortcut through The Grange Retirement Village - their management sent me number plates of some of the offending cars from this week - beware - police will be called by the management. All school sites are busy places In the mornings and the afternoons. We are very lucky that we can drive in off the public road - at many schools pick up is out on the street. Thank you to those who always do the right thing. Thanks you to those who are arriving after 3.15 Your children's safety is our paramount concern. Please help us keep them safe. Catholic Schools Week - March 8-14 All Catholic schools across NSW and ACT will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week from March 8-14. During that week we will have our Open Day on March 10, Multi-cultural Day on March 13, our Blokes and Buddies BBQ for Kinder and Year 5 students and dads on Saturday March 14 from 3.00pm and our first Parish/School Mass for Kinder and Year 5 at the 5pm Mass in the cathedral on Saturday March 14. For our multi-cultural day we are looking forward to planning another wonderful Multicultural Day at our school celebrating the rich diversity of our community. The children are encouraged to dress in the traditional costumes of their heritage. Dress can be as simple as wearing the colours of their flag or as intricate as an authentic traditional costume. In the afternoon, the children can entertain and inform us about their culture through dance, song or a short presentation If children have an item that they would like to share, please send an email to the school with their name, class and item description. Additionally students will be involved in some cultural experiences showcasing our communities. Children will have the opportunity to buy morning tea cooked by some of our families and lunch orders will also have a multicultural theme. God bless you and your family Jacinta Crowe - Principal Sympathies to Bishop Peter A. Comensoli on the death of his father, Mick this week.. Let us keep the Comensoli family in our prayers. May he rest in peace.

Please find below an email from one of our OLOR families receiving meals from the school community via the Support Pantry. Mrs Narelle Robinson, Class Parent Coordinator, is in need of other wonderful families to help with this service. If you are able to put your name forward to cook a couple of meals, as the need arises, please contact Narelle on [email protected]

Dear OLOR,

I just wanted to express our appreciation for the meals we have received as part of the support pantry

initiative.

It really has been such a big help at this time.

I have thanked Narelle for her coordination of the meals with parents and asked her to thank them on

our behalf.

All Year 6 students become leaders in specific areas of the school. Congratulations to all our student leaders.

Are you sure? If you are ever unsure about any aspect of your child’s schooling, school event, activity, procedure, learnings etc., you are encouraged to take the time to seek clarification with class teachers, Mrs Crowe or Mrs Cameron, specialist teachers and office staff. We are only too glad to assist you and work in partnership. The Parent Information Handbook can be found on the website. Click on this link: OLOR Parent Information Handbook

We are so lucky at OLOR to have many children who are from families who can speak another language other than English. I would like to put a display up at the front of the school welcoming families to our school. If you could help out by writing "WELCOME" (or something similar) in your native language I would be very appreciative. Just let your child know and I'll send home a piece of cardboard so that the greetings are all alike.

Positive Behaviour for Learning Be an Active Listener

This week our focus falls under the school rule, Respect for the Learning.

“Our various gifts and talents are not merely for personal use and satisfaction, but for the glory of God and the service of others.” (1Cor 12:4-6)

Speaking and Listening is a part of the new English syllabus. So, by using the focal point of ‘Being an active listener’, teachers will

engage the students with a variety of activities in the classroom that cover outcomes suitable to each stage.

Active listeners:

look at the person who is speaking

are attentive when someone else is speaking

think about what is being said by the speaker

are able to respond appropriately to the speaker, with either comments or questions

This rule can be reinforced at home when parents and siblings are speaking to each other. We as adults are role models to our

children, so highlighting the features of a good listener as we speak to each other, is a good way to support the work commenced at

school. A good time to do this is at the dinner table when conversations about the school/work day are valuable family interaction

times.

It is also important to model appropriate listening skills during a variety of other general conversation times.

Respect Self and Others - Respect Learning - Respect the Environment

Sport News OLOR Swimming Carnival Congratulations to all students who participated in our swimming carnival last Friday. We were blessed with the weather and the students had a wonderful time. I was extremely impressed by the sportsmanship and spirit showed by all students! A big thank you to all the parent helpers who gave up their day to help. Our carnivals run very smoothly with the assistance of great parents! Thank you to all the teachers for their help before and on the day of the carnival. The House Points were as follows: Casey – 269 Desmond – 245 McAuley – 228 Murphy – 183 Well done to all teams! North Shore Cluster Swimming Carnival The North Shore Cluster Swimming Carnival will be held on Tuesday 3rd March, at Hornsby Aquatic and Leisure Centre. The notes for the children representing OLOR will be sent home by the end of this week. Cluster Selection When selecting students for cluster, the 50m freestyle races are in the age groups; 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 years. The two fastest times are selected from all of the heats in the age group. eg if a child won their heat, it does not necessarily mean they will be selected for cluster as another heat in the age group may have had two faster times. For backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly students are selected according to three different age groups; Junior (8, 9 and 10years), 11 years, and Senior (12 and 13years). The fastest two times are selected from all of the heats in each age group. For students to qualify for the individual medley there is a qualifying time that students must make in order to be selected for Cluster. The relays consist of a Junior (8, 9 and 10years) and Senior (11, 12 and 13 years) team for both boys and girls. These are selected from the fastest 50m freestyle results. Thank you Erin Bosley - Sports Coordinator

The P&F Committee met for the first time in 2015 on Tuesday this week and I'd like to take the opportunity to introduce the team for this year: President - David Millar Vice President - Linda Tysoe Treasurer - Allison Costello Secretary - Courtney Hollinger Social Co-ordinators- Jackie Harris and Anne-Marie Corcoran Class Parent Co-ordinator - Narelle Robinson DPC Representative - Katherine Co-Elliott Grant Co-ordinator - Helen Longney We are also very lucky to have Lisa Manton and Sarah Manfe co-ordinating our bi-annual Spring Fair. As the year progresses there will be more information available but Lisa and Sarah are already well advanced in their planning and it will be the premier social and community event this year for the school. We are in good hands. I was also most pleased to meet some new parents to the school and was encouraged by their willingness to participate. Many thanks to Jacinta Crowe and Philip Ledlin for making us all feel welcome and for their insights into a number of related school issues. We also enjoyed some healthy discussion on a number of topics that will be of benefit to parents, friends and importantly, the children. Please feel free as the year progresses to introduce yourself to any of us on the P&F to discuss any issues or initiatives and keep an eye out for meeting dates - you are all welcome to attend. Enjoy "Wellbeing Week" next week and I look forward to meeting you during the term. David Millar - President - OLOR P&F
