We see our community as one moved by Faith, led by Hope and united in Charity, seeking, as a caring family, to walk in the footsteps of Jesus Christ by reaching out in welcome to all: the young, the old,

the stranger, and the neighbor. We commit ourselves to helping and healing, to feeding the hungry, to visiting the sick, and to consoling the bereaved as Jesus commanded in the gospels.

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Friends,

This weekend begins a very sacred period in the Church year: Advent. Over these four weeks before Christmas we become very aware of the importance of anticipation and imagination in our faith journey. Christmas Day itself is only a 24-hour period and it comes and goes so quickly. The shopping and frantic pace we keep between now and the actual celebration can be a draining experience for many. The Church attempts to remind us that each of us can determine our priorities. Naturally, our children get caught up in the excitement of the gift-giving and we were all there once. After we outgrow the need to receive gifts, there has to be a deeper reason to anticipate and celebrate. For us, as adult Catholic Christians, that has to be the realization and appreciation that the birth of Christ gave and continues to give a new meaning to what it is to be human. Take advantage of the season of Advent to reassess your view of humanity and how sacred every one of us is because we are created in God’s im-age. Reflect on how you view and speak about your-self and others, especially those who in the eyes of this world are looked upon as the least, the lost and the last. I also want to leave you with a few other thoughts as we enter the last month of the year. I read a lot and once in a while I am deeply touched by a phrase or a line that challenges me. The following are random quotes that I find very meaningful. They are out of context but I can create the context within my own life

for each of them. “The Bible is not primarily a book about us and what we should do, it is a book about God and what God has done.” “In the pursuit of knowledge, everyday something is added; in the pursuit of enlightenment, everyday some-thing is eliminated.”

When people return from military service and have been deeply affected by the experience of war, it can be a challenge for family and friends to understand their behavior. Recently I saw these terms as attempts to describe the phenomenon: During the Civil War, they called it a “soldier’s heart,” in WWI it was re-ferred to as “shell shock,” in WWII it was “battle fa-tigue,” and today it is described as “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” (PTSD).

I recently saw the 3 primary values of the American way of life listed as “appearance, affluence, and achievement.” Some people say in the political arena “when power dominates truth, criticism becomes betrayal.” That may also apply to the Church.

Finally, while reading a book about the black experi-ence in America, I came across this quote by Frederick Douglass: “My part has been to tell the story of the slave. The story of the master never wanted for narra-tors.”

Enjoy Life!

Fr. Ron Coyne

How Can We Help? One of our very own parishioners, Drew Faria, is an intern at the Newman House Catholic Center, Boston University. Drew has generously donated his time to spreading the word of God to the students at BU. We ask that you prayer-fully consider a donation to his life-changing mission at BU.

Dear Friends, My name is Drew Faria, and I work at the Boston University Catholic Center. I am a recent graduate of BU whose life has been profoundly transformed by this community and Christ’s presence in it. As a campus minister, I am responsible for keeping the projects and efforts of our community running. Hundreds of

students come for sacraments and more than fifty lead or participate in bible studies. We host events for BU students with pasta dinners, sports outings, men’s/women’s groups, service projects, retreats, and talks from visiting Catholic speakers. I play an administrative role by organizing re-treats, outreach events, and bookkeeping efforts for our community. On a personal level, I lead bible studies and minister to those feeling burdened by the challenges of balancing a college and Catholic lifestyle. My work as a campus minister supports the faithful growth of BU students. Communities like the CC have never been more important in a time when the Church suffers from a lack of participation, and college students fall to despair, anxiety, and a sense of worthlessness. I have seen Christ renew hope and love in students who enter the CC, including myself. My mission is not one I undertake alone. I invite you on this mission of prayer and service with me to build faithful leaders like never before. My position does not come with an established income, thus I humbly ask for your support with a monthly donation towards my work’s monthly ex-penses. I would love to get in touch with you and meet to explain my ministry in more detail. Meanwhile, pray for the spiritual growth of the BU students and their commitment to the Church. Thank you and God bless, Drew Faria, Ministry Project Director [email protected]

To donate online, please visit www.BUcatholic.com/donate. Donate through Paypal or Church Giving (bottom of page), choose “Regular” donation, and write “BU Intern” in the additional notes. Make sure to click the “Add special in-structions to seller” or “Add note” and write “BU Intern”. You may also donate by mail with a check made payable to Boston University Catholic Center (write “BU Intern” on memo line) 211 Bay State Road, Boston, MA 02215.

Christmas Giving Tree Project Each Advent Season our parish donates approximately 1,500 Christmas gifts to needy children living on the North Shore. This wonderful program is coordinated with Catholic Charities North.

Our Giving Tree Project begins this week-end. Three Christmas trees with gift tags have been placed in the Church. When you take a gift tag, please purchase the item requested and return the unwrapped gift with the gift tag to the Church or the back porch of the Rectory before Monday, Dec 9.

If your gift tag is for a gift card, please return your gift card with the gift tag attached to the Rectory during Office Hours before Monday, Dec. 9. Please be as gen-erous as your means allow and thank you for participating in this wonderful program that makes Christmas better for so many children.

Grand Annual Appeal We have launched our Grand Annual Appeal.

We rely on funds raised through our Grand Annual Ap-peal to balance our budget, to support our many parish ministries, and to preserve the exquisite beauty of our Church and property. We sincerely appreciate your ongoing support of Our Lady, Star of the Sea Parish. If you have not received the parish mailing please contact the Rectory at 781-631-0086. Grand Annual envelopes are available at all Church exits. Donation may be placed in the weekend Offertory collec-tion, or you may mail or drop off your contribution to the Rectory at 85 Atlantic Avenue, Marblehead, MA 01945.

Prayers for the Sick It has been a tradition in many parishes (including Our Lady’s) to include people who are ill in the Prayers of the Faithful at the weekend Masses if it has been requested. I have major concerns about the confidentiality of the practices being aware of the rights of privacy and HIPPA laws in Massachusetts. I brought these concerns to our staff and we have decided to cease this practice. I also mentioned this issue to the Pastoral Care Department (Chaplains) at North Shore Medical Center and they were very supportive of our decision. You are always welcome to request prayers for those who may be ill physically, emotionally, or spiritually. We will be happy to add them to our personal prayers.
