Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Lawrence D’Anjou

As I consider the many ministries that exist at St. Raymond, I give God thanks. We have ministries for the grieving, for the poor, for the sick, for job seekers, for those seeking faith and for those who want to deepen their faith – just to name a few. We have groups for women (the Catholic Daughters, the Women’s Guild and WINGS) and a group for men (the Knights of Columbus). In recent years I have thought that, just as we have the women’s group WINGS which is specifically dedicated to the spiritual growth of women, we ought to also have a group specifically dedicated to the spiritual growth of men. Enter the Band of Brothers. Under the patronage of St. Joseph, the husband of Mary, this is a new weekly men’s ministry star ng on the Saturday a er Labor Day, September 10th, at 7:30 am in the Kid’s Klub. The Band of Brothers is led by myself and Fr. Bob along with three lay men of the parish: Geoff Massa, Andy Baldocchi and Michael Leonard. The Band of Brothers is open to men and boys age 16 years of age and older. Each week we will meet for the hour before the 8:30 am morning Mass (op onal but recommended for par cipants) to gather for social me, listen to a compelling talk about male Chris an spirituality and to share table discussion on the topic of the day.

Fathers are encouraged to bring their sons of qualifying age so as to learn together what it means to be a Chris an man, husband and father. An ongoing theme will be how to enter into a personal and living rela onship with Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We will explore what this means in terms of everyday living, and upon taking up the inevitable spiritual ba les that men face as Chris ans. An integral part of the Band of Brothers will be the encouragement and support we obtain in helping each other to live the Chris an life. We will delve deeply into the Bible and specifically into the gospels of Jesus Christ and the le ers of St. Paul as well as the teachings of the Catholic Church. A par cular goal for this ministry is to help strengthen marriages and families. And we’ll also have opportuni es for the occasional social or purely fun event. I want to encourage all men of qualifying age to inves gate this new ministry. It will be good for you, and it will help you realize your poten al as a man of God. This is our prayer: “Glorious St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin, obtain for me a pure, humble, charitable mind and a perfect desire to follow God’s will. Help me to be the man God created me to be. I offer this prayer in the name of Jesus, the one you held, loved, protected and provided for and who is Christ

our Lord and Savior. Amen.”

Blessing and Enthronement of Santo Niño

Also in this bulle n I want to announce a special Mass on Sunday September 18th at 12:00pm for the blessing and enthronement of the Santo Niño. The Santo Niño is the Christ child statue given by the explorer Magellan in 1521 to the Philippines. It is the oldest Chris an image given to the Philippines and began the conversion of the country to Catholicism (the Philippines is over 86% Catholic). There will be a procession of flowers by the children to the Santo Niño, special music and dress, the blessing and enthronement of the Santo Niño in our chapel and a recep on a er Mass. Parishioners who have a Santo Niño statue in their homes can bring them to Mass for a blessing. Come and be a part of it!

First Reading Wisdom 9:13-18b Responsorial Psalm Psalm 90:3-4,5-6,12-13,14-17 Second Reading Philemon 9-10, 12-17 Gospel Reading Luke 14:25-33 Background on the Gospel Reading In chapter 14 of Luke's Gospel, Jesus is speaking to people gathered at the table about the difficul es of following him. This group of people is suspicious about Jesus, looking to catch him doing something wrong. Jesus speaks to them in parables, emphasizing that although there is a right way to be a disciple and enter into the kingdom of his Father, it is a difficult path to follow. Many, even some of the guests at the table, reject the invita on. So Jesus turns to the crowds and speaks to them of

discipleship. Jesus explains that, when it comes to making a choice for the Kingdom of God, nothing can get in the way. When Jesus describes “ha ng” one's father and mother, he is not talking about feelings. Rather, he is emphasizing very strongly that choosing to be a disciple means that everything else—family, money, your own life—must come second. In Ma hew's version of this story (Ma hew 10:37), Jesus refers not to “ha ng” father or mother, but to loving them more than Jesus. Jesus makes it very clear that being a disciple is not easy. It means to bear one's own cross. These difficult sayings of Jesus are followed by two brief parables (a person construc ng a tower and a king marching into ba le) that make an obvious point—don't start what you cannot finish. Discipleship is difficult and is something we can commit to only if we are prepared to put the Kingdom of God before everything else.

Treasures from our Tradi ons Some mes this "Treasures" column can seem to be a species of crib-notes for Catholic Jeopardy. Indeed, you may never know when knowledge of our par cularvocabulary may come in handy. Such is the case with papal bulls, which

conjure up all sorts of images, but are actually not what you might expect. A bull is a papal le er on a ma er of great consequence, such as a decision about a crisis in the Church, the declara on of a doctrine, the summoning of a council , or the canoniza on of a saint. It has a more solemn inten on than a mere le er or even an encyclical , a teaching le er circulated through the whole Church. Its odd name comes from the La n bulla, which is the stamp used to apply a signatorial design to the hot lead , or even molten silver or gold , that seals the decree.

The format for the bull is the name of the pope in La n, followed by the

tle "servant of the servants ofGod,'' also in La n, and then the text. The tle of the bull is always the first two words of the text. Some

God), the promulga on of the dogma of the Assump on in 1950 by Pope Pius XII; or Humanae Salu s (Human Salva on), by which Pope John XXIII convened the Second Va can Council in 1962.

Philosophy When we plant the seeds of faith in our children, they and we bear the fruit of God’s mercy and love in our daily lives. We help Children, 3 to 5 years of age, to experience God’s love and mercy in a way meaningful to them. Spiritual Works of Mercy Children are li le miracles wai ng to receive their faith. Yet they are burgeoning disciples on their own personal journey of faith. Their first steps into their faith journey are filled with ques ons, curiosity, and wonder. It’s easy to see the seven Spiritual Works that remind us that the youngest amongst us begin their faith in the same ways adults do. The ques ons may seem simpler or different but the need for and prac ce of God’s mercy and love remains constant. A child’s journey begins at an early age with stories, prayers, and ac vi es. The ac vi es are more than prayers and cra s. They are acts that help them see and prac ce God’s mercy in their lives.

Winnie the Pooh and God Too! For years our ministry has used A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh image as a playful and though ul reminder that CO-OP Sunday School is just around the corner. When we look deeper into the language of A.A. Milne we see the kernels of words that bear Chris an fruit. Please enjoy the quotes from A.A. Milne that remind us of the Spiritual Works of Mercy and our children.

When we comfort the sorrowful, we listen to others troubles. • “Some people care too much. I

think it's called love.” • I don’t feel very much like Pooh

today,” said Pooh. “There, there,” said Piglet. “I’ll bring you tea and honey un l you do.

When we counsel the doub ul, we provide instruc on that leads them to the wisdom of God’s mercy and love. • “Piglet no ced that even though he

had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gra tude.”

• “Just because an animal is large, it doesn't mean he doesn't want kindness; however big Tigger seems to be, remember that he wants as much kindness as Roo.”

When we instruct the ignorant, we provide services that teach God’s children. • “Some people talk to animals. Not

many listen though. That's the problem.”

When we pray for the living and the dead, we learn prayer is powerful when we feel helpless. • I think we dream so we don’t have
