Reflections ˜ Reflexiones Gospel: Luke 21:25-28, 34-36

Today's reading might seem to be a real "downer." Just as we are beginning the new liturgical year, we hear Jesus' reminders to "be vigilant" and "pray." Advent is a time of preparation for Jesus' final coming. Jesus, the just one, who will judge us in the final days of human history, wants us to be able to stand up like true Christians when that time comes. Decide how you will show that you have heard Jesus' words on this first day of Advent.

1.) Jesus does not want us to be afraid at the time of judgment. He wants us to "stand . . . and raise our heads." He wants us to greet him as our "ransomer," for it is he who will lead us from captivity. Advent is a good time to ask: What holds me captive? Why do I need someone to ransom me or rescue me? And what is my attitude toward this Someone who, when he comes, will set me free?

We live in an era when calendars rule our lives; we rely on technology to help us keep track. Today the scriptures invite us to pause and consider our priorities as disciples of the Lord. More than ever before in human history we have disposable time to use how we choose, yet we often feel rushed and over-committed. The readings declare that God will fulfill all the promises that God has made. Until that time of perfect justice, righteousness, and salvation comes upon us we are asked to be alert at all times, to avoid worry and distractions, to pray for strength, and to care lovingly for one another. So, as we prepare to celebrate again the coming of the Savior, think about the stewardship of time. Think back to third grade when we learned the difference between needs and wants, and realize how much the line has blurred between the two since then. Is your calendar too full? Streamline it by looking at it with an informed eye: What must you do and what would you like to do, and how can you put God first this Advent? Copyright (c) 2009, World Library Publications.

HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION December 8, the Solemnity of The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is always a day of obligation except in years when December 8 falls on a Sunday. Therefore, Saturday, December 8, 2018, is a Holy Day of Obligation. As is, of course, Sunday December 9 (and every Sunday).

OBLIGATION TO ATTEND TWO MASSES: As occurred last year at Christmas, we again have the unusual occurrence of the obligation of the faithful to attend Mass on two consecutive days.

ENGLISH BIBLE STUDY

Bible Study in English with Fr.Cameron Faller will continue on December 11

th

with St. Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews. It will be in the school cafeteria at 7pm. Refreshments will be served.

THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE

We are in fairly good company when we ask God for justice. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God’s justice is something other than this, of course. God’s justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shorn-off stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah’s time. Israel’s kings held the promise of God’s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God’s promise could be realized through them. Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke’s Gospel echoes that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. And so Advent begins with a promise. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
