From Our Pastor

“Why do I have to go to confession? Isn’t it enough for me to just tell God that I am sorry?” These are not un-common questions. Confession is not the most popular Sacrament for many Catholics. Often, when discussing confession with young people, I will ask them this question. If I do something wrong and I feel bad about it, and then if I ask God to forgive me, does He? I think that they think that the answer is going to be “no”. After all, they know that we believe in the importance of going to confession. They often seem surprised when I tell them that the answer to that question is “yes”. When we sincerely ask God for the gift of His forgiveness God always gives it to us. The next question is this: If God forgives us when we ask, then why do we need to go to confession.

I have always found something that Saint John Paul II said to be helpful. He said that when ever any one of us does something beautiful or good, it raises us all up because we are all connected by our Baptism. He went on to say that whenever anyone does something sinful, no matter how small or private that act may be, it brings us all down. We are all connected to each other. That means that what I do has an effect on each and every other member of the Body of Christ.

So, why go to confession? The answer is rooted in the insights of St. John Paul II. It is true that when I ask God to forgive me my sins that I am reconciled with God. I still, however, need to be reconciled with those who have been affected by my sin. I need to be forgiven by, and reconciled with the rest of the members of the Body of Christ. In Confession, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, I receive the two fold gift of being reconciled with God and with the Church. To go to Confession is to make a statement of faith that we believe that the Church, the Body of Christ, is: One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic.

So much of what we do as Catholics is rooted in our understanding of our interconnectedness. We believe that Baptism connects us to one another and to those who have gone before us, the Communion of Saints. This in-terconnectedness means that we are also responsible to each other. We pray for each other because of this interconnectedness; we help those throughout the world who are in need because of our interconnectedness; we confess our sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation because of our interconnectedness. The next time that you go to Confession realize that you are giving a great gift to all of us who are members of the Body of Christ.

God Bless, Fr. Jack

Vision Statement, which will provide us with our IN-

SPIRATION for our 3-Year Plan:

“We are a growing, joyful, prayerful, Eucharist-centered,

vibrant Catholic Community of believers who welcome all

people in the name of Jesus Christ. We engage in this

faith journey together through sacraments, charitable

works, life-long faith formation, and stewardship.”

“Eucharist-centered” We recognize that our identity as

Christians stems from the Eucharist – the real presence of

Jesus Christ here on Earth. We receive grace and spiritual

nourishment through the Eucharist. We spend time in ado-

ration of the Eucharist – time in His presence, enabling us

to follow His Will.

"The Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacra-

ments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are

bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucha-rist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself,

our Pasch."
