West Sacramento is a member
city in SACOG, a regional planning
joint powers authority. The agency
provides a forum for regional plan-
ning efforts that undertake a wide
variety of programs and projects designed to ease the flow of traffic and mit-
igate its effects.
Local transportation initiatives include the “streetcar” project, the develop-
ment and use of autonomous vehicles (such as the truck pictured) and the
expansion of light rail. Members asked some pointed questions.

drawn, delivers the “door prize”, cur-

the only “free lunch” found in town.

Jim Belinis Wins!
(but it was close)
Treasurer Chris Bradford reports on the
weekly football pool: “In another close
week, Jim Belenis squeaks out a victory
picking 11 winning games. Out of 8
players this week, Jim was the only par-
ticipant to pick Carolina as a winner.
David Kamminga pulls into first place
as Peter Anderson loses his focus and
grip on winning games this week. The
Cahill family is in a tight race as Celia
has obviously spending time online re-
searching games and coming up con-
sistent weekly play. Jim better sharpen
his pencil!” And the Club makes money!

Kathleen O’Leary
11/01/1947 - 12/09/2017
The West Sacramento Rotary Club lost a dear friend
and long time member when Kathleen O’Leary, our per-
ennial “Sunshine Chair” passed away on December 9.
Sponsored by Tom Wallace, Kathleen joined the Club on
April 1, 1993.
The news of Kathleen’s passing reached us through a
posting her daughter, Colleen, made on Kathleen’s Face-
book page. Here it is, in part:
“Kathleen O'Leary passed away on December 9, 2017 at
Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento. She passed after
a short battle with pancreatic cancer and was surrounded
by all my family, who loved her without question. There
will be services to celebrate my mother on December 21
and 22, 2017 in West Sacramento. Further information
from Colleen Roscoe- [email protected] or at my
mother's home phone, (916) 925-8565.”

REPRINTED FROM THE WEST SACRAMENTO NEWS-LEDGER — NOV 23, 2011 —
By Steve Marschke
News-Ledger Editor
Right on time at 10 o’clock on Friday morning, a crane dropped a shiny new piece of public artwork onto a concrete base at the
Rotary Centennial Park. It was planned by Rotary members to be an asset to the neighborhood near Jefferson and Michigan
boulevards and the Safeway center – and in part, to make Kathleen O’Leary happy.
Dan Ramos, president of the West Sacramento Rotary Club (one of the city’s two Rotary chapters – his holds afternoon meet-
ings), explained.
The land was a remnant from when Jefferson Boulevard was a highway that belonged to CalTrans. The city got the property
after West Sacramento formed and turned it into a city street.
“It just kind of sat there, unimproved and ugly,” said Ramos. “Kathleen O’Leary (at the time, a city redevelopment agency of-
ficial and Rotary member) talked to the city about improving it. Don Schatzel (retired city parks director and Rotarian) was pre-
sent, back then, too. She and Don started the project, and got a grant of some sort.”
The Rotary “adopted” the scrappy little park in 1993, said club member Debbie Reynolds. The club took over maintenance and
improvements at the little park across from the shopping center – which now features neatly manicured shrubs and walkways.
“The artwork was always part of the original design, we just couldn’t afford to get it going,” said Ramos. “We really wanted to
do it to honor Kathleen, too – we wanted to make sure it got up for her.”

Help The Christmas Basket Project!
It’s last meeting before Christmas. Our last chance to make a donation to the
Christmas Basket Project. Our last chance to help families in need.
For 23 years in a row the club has increased the amount of its donation, breaking it’s
own record in generosity year after year. All the money that is raised is then matched
by the club and then given to the Christmas Food Basket Project. Benefiting are 650
West Sacramento singles and families, many of them elderly, who have signed up to
receive a box of assorted food items as ‘Christmas
baskets’. For most, this is the only way they will
know someone is thinking of them during the holi-
days.
Marty Garozzo, and Tim Carnahan manage our
fundraising for this effort, and they have been work-
ing over time! They just need a little more help
from all of us to be able to deliver some much-
needed Christmas cheer. Get ready for one more
pass-the-hat!
Dig into your pockets this Holiday Season and chip
in when Tim and Marty pass the hat. Think ahead,
and write a check to the Christmas Basket Project.
