The Season of Pentecost
Extending from Pentecost Sunday all the way to Christ the King Sunday in November, the season of Pentecost is a time to contemplate the living out of this life of the Holy Spirit. These days of the church year are grounded in God who is the rock; God, whose steadfast love breathed life into all creation; God, whose love animates the healing hands of Jesus. We, as Christians build upon this foundation, but the questions remain: What will we build? What will be built upon our lives ?

Brief Order For Confessionand ForgivenessPlease remain standing
Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen
Pastor: In Christ's dying and rising, we are reborn; we are no longer dead in our sin. Let us return to the shepherd and guardian of our souls, confessing our sin.
If you are able, please kneel -- or you may be seated
Pastor: Almighty God . . .
All: We confess before you our preference for things that pass away, our silence in the face of injustice, our reluctance to accept the free-dom of forgiveness. Make us whole again; renew in us the grace of baptism; and set our minds on the things that are above.
Please remain kneeling
Pastor: God calls us to seek good and to turn away from evil. To those who believe in Jesus Christ, God grants forgiveness of sin, strength in weak-ness, and the promise of eternal salvation.
All: Amen
Opening Hymnplease stand if you are able
1. God of our life, all glorious Lord, Be now and evermore adored! Into the opening of this day Bring grace and love and peace, we pray.
2. Make clear our path, that we may see Where we must walk to be with thee And ever listen for thy voice, That we may make thy way our choice.
3. Give us thy help in ev'ry task, Nor let us fail of thee to ask For grace in speech, for love in deed, From wrongful actions to be freed.
4. At eventide then will we raise A grateful heart in songs of praise, And worship thee and thy dear Son With God the Spirit, ever one.
Pastor: The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
All: And also with you.
Pastor: Let us pray. . . Generous God, your Son gave his life that we might come to peace with you. Give us a share of your Spirit, and in all we do empower us to bear the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
All: Amen

First LessonJames 5:13-20New Revised Standard Version
Marks of the Christian community include praying for those who are sick and in need, celebrating with those in good health, re-storing those who have strayed, confessing sins to one another, and offering forgiveness to each other.
13 Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven.
16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effec-tive. 17 Elijah was a human being like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest.
19 My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and is brought back by another, 20 you should know that whoever brings back a sinner from wandering will save the sinner’s soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

Reading of the Gospel Lesson Mark 9:38-50New Revised Standard Version
On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus teaches his dis-ciples about ministry that involves service and sacrifice. His disciples are slow to realize that these words apply to them as well as to others.
38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 Whoever is not against us is for us. 41 For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.
42 “If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. 43 If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. 45 And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, 48 where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched.
49 “For everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you sea-son it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
PsalmPsalm 19:7-14
Leader: The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the Lord are sure, making wise the simple;
All: the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is clear, enlightening the eyes;
Leader: the fear of the Lord is pure, enduring for-ever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
All: More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb.
Leader: Moreover by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
All: But who can detect their errors? Clear me from hidden faults.
Leader: Keep back your servant also from the insolent; do not let them have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.
All: Let the words of my mouth and the med-itation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
Gospel Hymn Part 1 Please stand if you are able
Break now the bread of life, Dear Lord to me,As once you broke the loaves beside the sea.Beyond the Sacred page, I seek you Lord;My spirit waits for you, O living Word.
Bless your own truth dear Lord, To me, to me,As When you blest the bread by Galilee. Then shall all bondage cease, all fetters fall; And I shall find my peace, my all in all!
Gospel Hymn part 2
You are the Bread of Life, Dear Lord to me,Your Holy Word the truth that rescues me. Give me to eat and live with you above;Teach me to love your truth, for you are love.
Oh, send your Spirit Lord, now unto me,That he may touch my eyes and make me see.Show me the truth concealed within your Word,And in your book revealed I see my Lord.

Eucharistic Prayer
Pastor: All glory and honor to you, God of grace, for you gave your only Son Jesus Christ once for all on the cross to be the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world, that all who believe in him might have eternal life.
All: Amen, Come Lord Jesus.
Pastor: In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying: Take and eat; this is my body given for you. Do this for the remem-brance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Therefore heavenly Father, in this sacrament of the suffering and death of your Son, we now celebrate the wonder of your grace and your saving presence in our lives.
All: Amen
Pastor: Let us now pray with confidence the words our Saviour gave us:
All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;and forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us;and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen
Pastor: Come, all has been prepared; eat and drink with delight, and be satisfied.
All: Thanks be to God.
