OUR SAVIOUR’S LUTHERAN CHURCH IT IS SHARK WEEK!!! (July 28 th through August 4 th ) Every summer The Discovery Channel airs a whole week of sharky programs. It is really hard to explain my excitement about Shark Week and my fascination with sharks. I had several memorable encounters with sharks while on fishing boats on the Washington coast, I have caught small sharks while fishing along the Pacific Coast, and I once encountered a shark while surfing. Now for many years The Discovery Channel event known as Shark Week has been connected with my summer vacation time. Our vacations usually include time at, and in, an ocean. And the event known as Shark Week often coincides. So it has occurred frequently that our evening viewing while on vacation is some scientific, or cinematic or “educational” program about sharks. (I use quotation marks because there often is a bit of obvious fear-mongering involved in what is called “educational”.) And, I will admit, that can make surfing far more of a mental game. The images of night the before can play tricks on your mind in the morning surf. But still I plunge in. I think I have always been fascinated with sharks. I had always enjoyed being in the ocean, and I started surfing while in college. My first wetsuit covered all but my head, hands and feet. So when I got my first tattoo, a shark, I got it on my ankle, visible below my wetsuit. As I have aged, along with my circulation, I have added booties, gloves and a hood to my wetsuit in order to tolerate the cold. But the homage (French for respectful tribute) to the apex predator whose realm I enter in the waves is still always with me. It may all sound silly or childishly frightening, in the same way that people like scary movies, but there is more to it. There is something like worship in my experience in, and on, the ocean. Even yards from the shore I am always keenly aware of how small I am on the face of the vast ocean, with all that it holds. And it is in those moments that I sit in awe of creation. The praise and poetry of the Psalms speaks of this. How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number — living things both large and small. There the ships go to and fro, and Leviathan, which you formed to frolic there. Psalm 104:24-26 (NIV) And I will admit to the same fear humans have always felt when considering the “Leviathan” that God has made to “frolic” in the sea. But rather than flee in fear, I bow in awe. It is helpful to be reminded that I am not the purpose of the creation, nor am I the pinnacle of it, but rather a special part in which God takes delight. So I face my fear, I allow my smallness to be made obvious, and I enter the place where I know I am not the big fish. And I let the fear and wonder of creation wash over me with the salty water that is so similar to what flows in my veins. There I pray and offer my praise. Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord! IT IS SHARK WEEK!!! (July 28

th through August 4

th) Every summer The Discovery Channel airs a whole

week of sharky programs.

Psalm 104:24-26 (NIV)

And I will admit to the same fear humans have always felt when considering the “Leviathan” that God has made to “frolic” in the sea.

Psalm 104:35b (NIV)

Council Corner July, 2019 At the July meeting the church council reviewed the financial status and found that weekly offering income has improved to be nearly on budget. OSLC investments continue to be strong with the strong stock market performance and overall OSLC is in a good financial position at this time. The updates to the three Norris houses that will house the LSS-SW offices continue with flooring and painting being the primary focus this past few weeks. It is anticipated that the houses will be ready for the LSS-SW move-in during the week of July 22nd. We wish to thank OSLC members for supporting the purchase of a van. Gifts toward the pur-chase have come in strongly and we have begun looking at replacement vans. The market values have turned out to be somewhat higher than originally expected so we have raised the purchase price ceiling for the search. The funds for the purchase come from the gifts from members and bequest funds put aside in 2018 for the purchase. The OSLC youth and several adults have been busy with their work-camp trips and initial word is that the trips have gone well with many life-changing experiences reported by the youth. Thanks you to OSLC members for supporting this important ministry for our youth. Report respectfully submitted,

Music Continued

Where are the Handbells?

The week of July 23 our five octaves of Malmark handbells were shipped to Jeffers Handbell Supply in Irmo, SC for handbell maintenance. The com-pany will take each bell apart to repair and replace any worn parts such as felt or springs, and to deep clean the bell. The work will take approximately 7-10 days. Handbells will be shipped back to us at Our Saviour’s mid Au-gust, which will be in plenty of time for rehearsals to resume in September. This handbell maintenance ensures that our bells will last for many, many more years of ringing. The last time this took place was about ten years ago.

Choir Rehearsals resume…

Handbell Choir will resume on Monday, September 9 at 6:30 p.m. Chancel Choir will resume on Thursday, September 5 at 7:00 p.m. Children’s choirs and Youth Handbell choir will not be rehearsing on

Wednesday evenings. There will be quarterly Music and Art camps, daylong events, which will include music education, rehearsal time, an art project, and lunch. These events will be free and open to the public. Youth choir ringers will be meeting additional times as determined by the youth ringers.

Children’s Music Room Dedication

On Sunday, September 8, Room 9 in the Activity Building, which is the children’s choir rehearsal room, will be dedicated in memory of Mary Lou Barker. Mary Lou was an avid supporter of our children’s choir program. She supported music education here and within the community. Please

join us that morning after each worship service for a small reception. You’ll have a chance to play the instruments as well. Save the date and plan to join us!!!

Christian Education at OSLC

EX Libris OSLC by Glenn Schrader

During this summer, there has been a lot of reading going on by members of Our Saviour’s! In fact a book group has started to form which will focus on books and themes that are important to understanding our Christian faith more deeply. Some of the books being considered are by Richard Rohr, Elaine Pagels, Brian McLaren, Diana Butler Bass, and others. Interested? Contact Glenn at [email protected] or 520-647-9863 for further details. And, a good “book” to read now is Mark’s Gospel – as indicated above for our Adult Christian Education Sunday Forums coming up! Also, Pastor Richard Mauthe will return in October to lead us in a study of the Book of Revelation, and Barbara Rossing’s book (“The Rapture Exposed”) or Elaine Pagel’s “Revelation” are good ways to look at the contemporary challenges surrounding this Biblical text.

ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Sunday Forums in the AB at 10:15 am

Special Series Starting in August and into September:

Mark’s Story about Jesus of Nazareth

At the time that the Gospels were written, the literacy rate was only about 2-3% of the population, and books were rare. Of course, the Bible as we know it wasn’t even in existence yet. Most people who received the “Good News” heard it orally – by storytellers who communicated narratives about Jesus’ life, sayings and instruction. Mark’s Gospel was likely the first to try to convey a “complete” story about Jesus, and listeners could probably hear it in its entirety in a couple of hours. How different this is from our own experience! We most frequently hear the New Testaments in lessons on Sunday mornings as “fragments”; perhaps we participate in Bible studies where we might read one chapter at a time. But have you ever read an entire Gospel in “one sitting” – much like a good story or novel that you just can’t put down until you get to the “ending”? Even less likely is the opportunity to have the story told to you by a good storyteller, just like those early Christians of 2000 years ago. This series of about five Sundays will begin on August 18 with an opportunity to view a reading of Mark’s Gospel during the Sunday Forum. Then you will have the chance to read the rest of Mark’s story or to view more on-line. On September 8, Professor Mark Allen Powell of the ELCA Trinity Lutheran Seminary (Columbus, OH) will join us to talk about how we might experience and understand the Gospel in a different way by an emphasis on “narrative” approaches that emphasize plots, settings, major and minor characters, and audience reaction. Not only is Professor Powell a widely recognized expert on the New Testament (he has written probably the most frequently used text at Lutheran seminaries), but he is also known as a very engaging speaker and instructor. If you have never read a Gospel (or a New Testament Letter) all the way through in one sitting – maybe just one afternoon or evening – you may have missed something! Please join us for a new way to study and learn about the Bible and the Christian faith. Watch for an insert in the Sunday bulletin starting in early August with more information.

I would like to take this time to thank everyone for their generosity and kindness. The numerous emails, texts, phone calls, and gifts that I have received has touched my heart deeply. This transition has been bittersweet as I am excited for this new journey in my life but I am also extremely sad leaving my OSLC family. I take with me so many wonderful memories and for that I am grateful. To all of the extraordinary OSLC staff, volunteers, and parishioners - I feel blessed to have had the honor to work with you all and I thank you for your dedication to OSLC. You all have made a profound impact in my life in so

many different ways. I will carry your kindness, friendship, acceptance, and love in my heart forever. I look forward to visiting, volunteering, and seeing you all again soon. May God Bless and Take Care of you always. I love you, I will miss you, and I thank you all for being who you are! :-) -Theresa Lehrling

News From the Office. By Kathryn Barrera, Parish Administrator

Hello Everyone! In case you hadn’t heard, Theresa Lehrling has taken a position at Salpointe and no longer works at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and we miss her already. My husband, 2-year-old son, and I moved out here in April from San Diego and we are still adjusting to the hot weather but we love it so far. I am so excited to be stepping into the position as Parish Administrator and I am looking forward to working with, and getting to know you all.

Kathryn
