Library News

Welcome to another term of fun and learning in the Library. Please remember your Library day so you can borrow great books each week! Please ensure your books are returned from last term so you can start borrowing again this term.

We will again be offering the children the opportunity to take part in the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge. Last year we congratulated 77 children from Kindergarten to Year 6 who completed the challenge. This year we hope to encourage even more reading champions. All students K-6 are now registered and they are all encouraged to participate in the challenge as a great way to develop a love of reading for leisure, pleasure and learning through quality literature. Children in Years 3-6 can start reading books from the PRC booklists now, and then they'll only need to read one book per week to succeed, because the closing date is not until August. Students in Years K-2 complete the reading challenge in class with their teachers. Guidelines and tips were shared with all students in recent weeks and you can also visit the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge website for more information. Thank you teachers and parents for encouraging your children to read and participate in the reading challenge again in 2018. Good luck and happy reading everyone!

Library Helpers Needed

The Library is a very busy place with plenty of book covering and book shelving to be done each week. I am inviting any parents or carers who are interested in helping to come to the Library on Mondays, Tuesdays or Fridays or leave your name and details at the front office. Any help would be much appreciated!!

Visiting Historian

Last term we had an historian visit our school. The students thoroughly enjoyed our history workshops in the Library! Read some student responses after they visited the History display.

Work done with Miss Dunn! ICT and Health Education in El Dorado El Dorado had worked very hard to use a range of technology in the classroom this term. They have used Google Classroom using their xos and did a fantastic job making video reports using the iPad application “Toontastic”. Students worked together to make creative videos outlining the affects that medicines and various helpful and harmful drugs can have on the body and why people use them. Excellent work El Dorado! Science in Wonderland Students in Wonderland engaged in a field investigation of the playground. They have been learning about materials and what purposes they can serve. Wonderland explored surfaces in the playground and what activities are best to play in that type of setting. E.g. Harry- “the concrete is good for games like handball because the ball can bounce on it but it isn’t good for games like football because the surface is too hard and people could get hurt”. Great work Wonderland!

Science in Pridelands Pridelands have completed fantastic work this term! They had been learning about how to use materials to create designs. Students enjoyed designing their own clothing and designed their own park. They discussed which materials would be best suited for safety at their park. E.g. a skate park needs smooth hard concrete to keep it safe for people to ride their bikes, scooters and skateboards.

They also investigated ways in which Aboriginal people have used natural materials to make tools and technology. E.g. They learned that bark from trees has been used to make canoes and that sap has been used to glue items together. Well done Pridelands!

Wonderland Art

Each Thursday Miss Fiona comes to our class to assist in Aboriginal lessons. This week we focused on the Dreamtime. The story is ‘How The Birds Got Their Colours’. After the story was read, Wonderland students completed a directed art drawing using pastel crayons.

K-2 Fun Friends Program

Students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 are learning about:

• Their sense of identity; • Being brave; • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some suggested activities you may like to try at home to reinforce the skills and strategies taught at school. Family activity Families and teachers should practise ‘introducing yourself’ games. Families and teachers need to explain and practise being brave. Being brave includes:

• Giving things a go even when you are scared • Trying a new ‘hard’ thing • Trying a new food • Trying new games • Sharing things you really want just for yourself

Activities for home

- Incorporate ‘brave charts’ where children can earn a stamp every time you notice them being brave. - Plant a tree or grow an organic vegetable garden to reinforce the message of healthy living. - Record the amount of time spent outside together. - Talk about what makes them happy.

NAPLAN Testing 2018 This year NAPLAN testing for students in years 3 and 5 will be held from Tuesday 15th May – Friday 25th May (Term 2 Week 3). NAPLAN stands for the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy and allows schools to receive data on student progress to support improving the teaching of literacy and numeracy. Opportunity Class for 2019 Opportunity classes cater for highly achieving Year 5 and Year 6 academically gifted students who may otherwise be without classmates at their own academic and social level. These classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Parents normally apply for an Opportunity Class when students are in Year 4. Students who are placed then attend the opportunity class full time in Years 5 and 6 at the primary school with an opportunity class. It is a two-year placement program. In the majority of cases, students who accept a place in an opportunity class will leave their current school to attend the school with an opportunity class. There is no provision to apply for Year 6 placement only. Applications for an Opportunity Class close on Friday 18th May and must be completed online. There will be no applications accepted after the closing date.

How do I apply? Parents must apply online from the Unit’s website at the following link: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 and should read the instructions carefully. Applications are available between 1 May and 18 May 2018. No late applications will be accepted. You will: 1. register to receive a password using your own email address, not one belonging to your child 2. log in to complete the application using the password provided 3. submit your application 4. receive an email confirming that you have successfully submitted 5. check the attachment to the email to confirm all details are accurate. The attachment will contain an application number There is an information booklet available at the front office to support parents in completing the application. If you have any questions about applying, please speak with Miss Page.
